It's unofficially fall around here! The weather has dropped into the 60s, we're sipping (whole30) soups, and I've swapped out some decor in the living room--more on that in a later post. But perhaps my favorite home related switch that occurs every year are the scents. Doesn't fall have the best-smelling candles? The best!
Over the weekend, I lit my favorite Grey Flannel candle from Target (no. 9 on the list below) and our whole great room smelled and felt so cozy. It's a really great transitional smell for summer to fall because it has some minor sweet notes, but it also smells like a snow day and last year I burned it all the way until Christmas. I haven't always been a big candle person, but now I'm convinced, lighting a candle is the easiest way to change the mood in your home, or at the very least your own personal mood. Here are 11 of my favorite fall scents:
1. After Light Boho Glass Candle: smells like warm tobacco, clove, patchouli and musk
2. Boulangerie Pumpkin Souffle: smells like a rich autumnal blend of roasted pumpkin and brown sugar
3. Brooklyn Candle Studio Spiked Apple Cider: smells like natural cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, orange, and cedarwood essential oils--it's crisp and cozy
4. Illume Woodfire Tin Candle: smells like cedarwood and smoke accords mix with heady patchouli leaves and warm vanilla to kindle the ultimate fireside fragrance.
5. Jonathan Adler Pop Bourbon Candle: smells like davana, cognac, plum, leather accord, birch, and cedar.
6. Illume Pumpkin Peppercorn: smells like a decadent pumpkin spiced with sweet peppercorn, roasted cinnamon bark and a twist of tangy citrus peel. Underneath the caramelized core is a harvest of earthen oak, molten amber, and black vanilla bean garnished with a touch of smoked chestnut.
7. Diptyque 'Feu de Bois' Woodfire Candle: smells like the warm, familiar, sophisticated accord of rare woods throughout the long winter days.
8. P.F. Candle Co No. 01: Spiced Pumpkin: smells like ripe pumpkin, creamy butter, and brown sugar, topped with toasted cinnamon and nutmeg.
9. Grey Flannel: smells like musk, a snow day, woodsy
10. Old Factory Candle's Autumn Leaves: smells like the rich earthy scent of a brisk autumn day
11. Nest Fragrances Pumpkin Chai: smells like a blend of wild pumpkin, spicy Masala chai, cardamom, ginger and cinnamon.
Are you a candle person? Do you have a favorite fall scent? Dish in the comments below so we can add it to our fall rotation.
Check out molly Rue Candles. My favorites for fall are Fig and Rhubarb and Peppermint Eucalyptus! http://www.mollyrue.com/
Oooo, I love candles too! But besides lighting a candle or whipping up a stove top potpourri, do you have other tips (maybe for a future blog post?) on keeping your whole house from smelling like what you just cooked for dinner for the next 24 hours? Happens. every. time. Or is it just me that has this problem?? Help!!
Here's a strange question: Where did you get the faux leaves AND the awesome white vase on your side table next to your couch? I love everything you do!!
The leaves are from a local craft store, you can find the vase right here. :)
Thank you! Ok one more question...the wood side table that looks like bricks...where is it from?
My absolute favorite fall scent is from Penelope Co: Flannel Shirt. It's musky and masculine, the perfect cozy, sexy scent for a bedroom (or, in my case, the whole darn house).

Some of bath and body works' candles are a little much for me, but I'm obsessed with their "Leaves" one. It's my favorite fall candle. Thanks for sharing these - I will have to add a few to my fall rotation :)
I especially love candles in the fall and winter! I just got pomegranate cider from Candelles (their fall collection came out not too long ago!) and it's incredible! I'm sensitive to a lot of synthetic fragrances, but their all-natural candles haven't given me any problems.
Ok, seriously! Grey Flannel = best fall transition EVA! Thank you for the recommendation! I've been simmering the "Williams Sonoma" blend (from Pinterest, but I stopped at Target today for some other things and picked up the candle on your recommendation--it's heavenly ?
I feel embarrassed even posting this, but last year Emily Clark mentioned Walmarts pumpkin candle, so I grabbed one. For $3ish it's a pretty good option for us budget-minded folks!
I was never a candle person (i'm scent sensitive) until last winter. I moved into an apartment for a few months for an internship above some people who smoked INSIDE their apartment. I became a candle convert so thanks for these suggestions!
Anthro's volcano candle is always a fave, and Target's Bella island moonlight is a good comparison at a much lower price!
I think you Instagrammed the grey flannel candle last year, and I went and scooped it up too! It is absolutely my favorite scent now - so cozy! Nothing makes my house feel more like a home than a candle, some light music and me curled under a blanket reading a book. It's the ONLY thing I love about winter. Ha!
I did!
I am OBSESSED with Voluspa's Baltic Amber scent. Such a great fall smell and transitions well into Christmas. The jar is also SUPER cute!
I saw on your snapchat yesterday a new side table on the other side of this couch. Do you mind sharing where it is from? I'm looking for something just like it!
It's from right here.
Apotheke "Woods" is incredible. I have been milking mine since someone gifted it to me THREE Christmases ago. It's lovely from the beginning of fall all the way to early spring!
Ha, there's the poster of Preston! I loved that story on your podcast!
There's no way we can ever take it down again! Hahaha
I don't have a fall one that I love, so thanks for Sharing! Once it snows I always burn balsam wood, it smells like christmas tree and gives that fresh and cold wintery smelly.

Loooove this candle from West Elm! Strangely
It doesn't have a name online although I am pretty sure it does on the candle itself.
My new favorite fall candle!
West Elm's woodfire is my favorite, too! Thank you, Melissa for linking because I've been searching their site, and it doesn't appear in the results. I'm completely obsessed with these and now that I know they are back, I'll start lighting up my stash from last year.
These are also my go-to fall/winter gifts -- especially since I always have extras! They are the best, and always come in beautiful containers that are awesome to reuse!
Love the blog, Chris & Julia, and thanks for sharing all your hard work with us!
I LOVE fall for this, the candles ! But I'm kinda sad summer is over :(
Fall and winter are the only times I'm lighting candles, but I last year I got tired of the ones I had (used them over and over again i guess...) So glad you give me all these new ones to try out ! The Boulangerie Pumpkin Souffle sound delicious, as far as reading smell goes !
I'm loving those throw pillows! Do you mind linking them when you get a chance?
The X one is from here and the spotted one is from here.
Diptyque's Feu de Bois, and I keep it out all year long. Best smelling candle *ever*, yo!
I grew up in and lived in SoCal until about a year ago, and bonfires at the beach were a thing year-round. I almost think it's kept me from getting too homesick having that candle around.
One last thing - my name's Julia and I'm in love with a Chris too. :)
Awww, you belong right here.
Oh man- that side table! *heart eyes*
Is it new??
We've had both side tables! Just moved things around for a new season. :)
I love the thought of using scented candles to bring a new element to a room but sadly I have a fragrance sensitivity and there are very few candles that aren't headache inducing. There is something about synthetic candles that affect me the worst - there are some light scented all natural candles, like vanilla that I can use. When I'm given a candle as a gift I will use when company is coming and put it in a discreet spot on my porch to delight my guests while the scent stays outside. I've received many positive comments about that. Another great option for those of us who are fragrance sensitive are the simmering stove potpourris. You choose what to use and can avoid scents that are too strong.
We actually have a recipe coming up for our favorite stove potpourri!
May I ask where do you guys got the lovely wall shelf?
We DIYed it. Check out this post.
