Casual Friday

Casual Friday: November 3, 2017

November 3, 2017

This week was one of those that felt never-ending. I think it had something to do with Halloween being on Tuesday, which made it feel like Friday and then we woke up and it was only Wednesday. Anyone else?

We've taken on a lot of campaigns in the next few weeks, which means a LOT of exciting work behind the scenes before the holidays really kick into gear around here; Including renovating a whole bathroom next week (not our own) on camera, and one other REALLY big project we'll introduce on Tuesday. Any guesses??

Other fun things this week

• While we're not decorating for Christmas around here YET, my mind is definitely already there keeping an eye open for good gift ideas and steals. This year, we really wanted to get (or build!) the girls a dress up rack for Christmas. And a rack is not complete without dress-up. We have some, but I added a ton more yesterday when I hit up Target and all of their costumes were 50% off in store! Run! Here are a few racks that I'm loving, too:

• We were really worried about Willow before our big party. She is so shy and we weren't sure how she'd react to so many people in our home. We prepared a comfy spot for her in the laundry room and in the garage that we could completely close off if she seemed anxious, but to our surprise, she completely thrived! She visited with everyone and was so happy to have her chin and ears scratched by every single person. And ever since, she has seemed even more settled here. There is always a transition period when you re-home a dog. I remember Charly cried for a few days and Willow started barking when Chris made eye contact with her (I think she was telling him to take her back home). I'm not sure when or why it finally clicked, but after multiple walks a day always coming back to our house, lots of love and attention and a lot of dog treats--Willow finally seems at home here. We still have moments of shyness--it was starting to rain a few days ago and I really wanted her to come inside but no treat or coaxing was going to stop her from walking backwards away from the door. But then the multiple times when we're on our walk and she stops just to lick my hand, or when she starts wagging her tail, even while laying down, when I walk by, or when she greets us at the front door, gives me the confidence that maybe she's happy here.

World Market is having a huge 40% off all furniture sale with code FURNSALE. Headboards for under $200. Sofas under $400. Blanket ladders for $60! I'm in love with this sale.

• Polly turned 3 months old this week! She is our smiliest, chubbiest, chattiest baby. She is sleeping well through the night, but nurses about every 2-2.5 hours during the day. I just want to pause time and soak her in every second. I love how her whole face and body transforms when she smiles. It melts me every time.

This is the leopard print cardigan that I was wearing in my stories yesterday that I received no less than 100 messages about. I got a medium, and it's roomy and cozy. (Could definitely wear a small, too!) Here's a similar one from Target.

• Found the only master bathroom inspiration pic I'm gonna need. Drool! (via Studio Muir)

• This may seem like a weird recommendation, because mixing bowls?, but these mixing bowls are as beautiful as they are stylish. The non-slip bottom is so nice and the gold feels really fancy on our open shelves. (we bought 2 sets!)

Hope you all have a happy weekend! We're all trying to kick colds around here and it may snow, so slippers, soup and snuggles are on the schedule.

  1. Can I fan-girl for a moment? I used to see your blog as one of my many decorating/home blogs but now you are definitely top tier! Above all, I think the integrity is what sets you apart. I love the honesty on the podcast - that some things are just a personal preference but you OWN it! I find that admirable. And the integrity with Instagram followers, with sponsored posts, budget breakdowns, etc. I also love that there's a huge personal touch to your instagram and blog - your pics and designs always feel 'lived in' and not the hyper-staged or "here's a perfectly placed leaf in our foyer to convey fall" (though I know there's a shit-ton of work that goes into the pics and content!)

I remember discussing comments and how readers, myself included, have slowed. So, here's a rave - your work and blog are appreciated!

  2. Hey there, we are looking for a family puppy and we also have three small children. I was wondering how shedding is with Willow? We have an English bulldog also but his shedding and allergies were so bad we can no longer keep him in the house. Our kids would love a new puppy but we can't do all the dog hair! Thanks!

    1. Oh, she sheds. Hahaha. But our last dog shed more. We're just kind of used to vacuuming and it's not a bigbug deal to us, but we also don't have allergies

    2. We have two English Bulldogs and one sheds like crazy and the other barely sheds at all. So maybe a dog that's not a puppy would work better so you can know in advance if it sheds or not.

  3. I've been looking for dining benches for a good long while now. Just bought two at World Market using that promo code for less than the original price of one, because they were on sale, and I was able to stack the coupon! You're the best!

  4. So happy Willow went home with you - a place that gives the the time and space she needs to transition to her new family and so glad she enjoyed the party! That's kind of a big deal for a shy girl.....

  5. I just have to tell you that I have been waiting to update our master bath until I can see what you all do with yours! It looks like we have a similar layout and I'm looking forward to the inspiration - and the bigger shower/tub decision!

  6. I think the BIG PROJECT is going to be a cabin reno! Also, Willow looks like a stuffed animal and I'm so happy you decided to adopt.

  7. I’m wondering how you are liking your Medford carpet in the basement. We are currently shopping for our basement and I’m wondering if the cut and loop combo is holding up to traffic or starting to look matted in places. I’m considering going with an all loop carpet but really love the look of the Medford pattern.

  8. Polly is just so adorable! And Willow...I am so happy your family found her. I am so excited to see your master bath reno. Love your style!

  9. Thanks for the great post, as always! I have to ask, why no Christmas decorating this year? I loved your story yesterday about the DIY decorating. Have a great weekend!

My Storage Hack for Organizing Christmas Decorations

Every year when I pack up the decorations after Christmas, I collect all of the garlands together in one box, I get all the candlesticks together in another box, and all my nativity sets go into their own box. We label the boxes "garlands," "candles," "nativity sets,"...which seems great until you remember that you have […]

Cranberry-Glazed Ham

What do you make for Christmas dinner? Sometimes we'll do a prime rib or a roast turkey, but this year, I'm going all out with a Christmas ham that just looks festive. For this recipe, I made a cranberry-orange glaze with some warm winter spices that takes this ham to the next level. Oh and […]

Raise your hand if you panic when your phone's low battery notification turns on? (Just me??) There's nothing worse when I'm out on a fun holiday outing taking video memories of my family, and I see that red light. Or I'm traveling and stuck in the airport on a layover...it gives me anxiety! I've tried […]
