What's Labor Day weekend without impulse-buying a major appliance?! Buying an appliance was no where on our list for the past holiday weekend, but while perusing through Home Depot (which is always on our list. Every day, it seems.) we realized every appliance was on sale and we did need/want a new range. We have been replacing our kitchen appliances one by one and since we had the money saved up for a new oven for when we renovated the kitchen, we figured--why wait when they are on sale now.
Our old range was not completely unusable. The oven worked fine. The cooktop was at 50%. Meaning 2 out of 4 burners reliably worked. Maybe not heated up quickly or evenly, but worked. But our new range?! It blows the old one out of the water.
We ended up going with a Kenmore to match our refrigerator and a double oven to make Chris (and Greta?) do this every time he is in the kitchen:
And sometimes this:
You'll have to ask him what that pose means, but I am guessing it translates into him being excited about having two ovens. Since he is the cook around here, I figured it was the least I could do--let him buy a double oven. Well, it was probably the most I could do--because those suckers are twice as much as a standard range. Still, it feels like a small thing to make him so happy and to help him even more excited about cooking. And since it was Labor Day, we did get a deal. Of course. That was the main reason we sprung for this bad boy, remember?
Sears is the only store that carries Kenmore so we headed to the Sears Outlet (where we found our fridge) to see if they had any deals on double ovens. They didn't. Then we checked our local Sears department store and they didn't have the one that we wanted. Some stainless ranges look more black with stainless accents and we wanted the top, where the dials were, to be stainless as well. Like this one that we had our eyes on:
We ended up just ordering it online. It was originally $1839.99 (don't even get me started about that number) but it was on sale for nearly $200 off. Delivery added $70 back on, but I Googled around until I found a promo code for free delivery and haul away. Woot!
Unfortunately, even with free delivery, after tax the total was still almost to the original price. And then I remembered (which is surprising because I never remember to do this) to check Ebates and see if I could order through them and get additional money back.
Booyah! Sure did. $103.56. So after all the discounts I scrounged up, we ended up forking out $1664.21 which is still a lot of money, but it is $357 less than what we would have paid at full price. But can I tell you that even I, the non-cook around here, think it was totally worth it. I try to cook one night a week and not having to worry about baking cauliflower breadsticks at one temperature and roasting squash and onions at another, while having them ready at the same time--frees up my mind!
The cooktop has a fifth warming burner and one of the ovens has a convection option and I am sure there are a thousand other tricks this thing can do that Chris can't wait to discover.
He's even talking about (with my encouragement) cooking his way through an entire cookbook now. And hosting Thanksgiving! See? Totally worth it.
It helps that it looks a heck of a lot better, too.
Wow, looks great. I think it's a good investment! I usually cook using stove-top sides. I always thought double ovens was for baking huge batches of cookies (I think it's obvious I'm not a cook!). :)
We did have to start storing our pans in the cabinet next to the oven that was actually pretty empty so it worked out. Even if I DIDN'T think about it until they were here to haul the old oven away.
Cha-ching! What a smart guy!
For sure!
Meagan,
I read somewhere that you can re-calibrate your oven if your degree is off. Hmm. Might be worth checking into!
Oh, if you scroll up, you'll see we did check out the outlet with no luck :( We found our fridge there though last year so we love to drop in and see if we can score a deal when we're shopping for appliances.
A blue dishwasher?! Funny!
Erin,
I need to learn how to use a convection oven! I did some baking over the weekend and opted out of the convection option because I didn't know how long to bake it or if I use the same temperature? I wish recipes included cooking times for convection ovens because I'm the kind of (inexperienced) cook that needs everything spelled out for me.
:)
WOOHOO! Love it! I have to say I am still in love with our convection oven we purchase a few years back (actually 6). All of my baking comes out perfect every time! Good Luck with your new appliance.
Great new range. I love stainless more and more, but we went with a black fridge because the old stove and dishwasher was black. Then I realized that the dishwasher was not even black but blue! who buys a blue appliance? Anyway, now we have a brand new black fridge and i wish it was stainless. Oh well.
JEALOUS! I would love to have a double oven!
I've been reading your blog for a while :) Next time you should check the sears outlet in orem, we got this same oven but the gas version for 1100 all because of a scratch on the side (which cant be seen when between cabinets!)
my mil has a double oven but hers is kinda switched, the little part is on the bottom. its actually kinda annoying cuz i feel like i have to lay on the floor to get stuff out of it. She's really short though so i guess it works for her! I would LOVE a new range! our oven is 50 degrees off.. ugh!! congrats its beautiful!!
awesome! we lived with our 1980s old oven for 4 years...it makes you appreciate the new one even more when you lived with the old one first
Ps my husband bought my engagement ring with ebates from Blue Nile----the cash back was amazing. :-)
Beautiful. I use the drawer on my oven to store our cookie sheets and cake pans. I guess I would lose that storage if I switched to this oven....never thought about that before!
Gasp!!!!!
It is breathtaking!!! My mom has a double oven and LOOOOVES it.
We got one of those in our previous home - and another bonus about the black and stainless steel is that it is easier to clean!! White ones can get so grimy so fast.
You are awesome! I really appreaciate the details you have posted. God bless you Chris and Julia.
