Fall 2017 House Tour Video!

September 7, 2017

Do you ever try looking back over your past year and feel like you haven't done anything? I've been feeling that way here and there, focusing on the things we haven't yet started/finished and feeling behind. But in preparations for this year's video tour (embedded below), Jules and I watched the tour from last year. And the one from when we moved in (!?!). Sometimes I think all of our accomplishments from the past blur together and we forget to give ourselves a little credit. Because this year - wow, what a year its been for our home. Lots of little details all around the house that have really brought it a long way in feeling "finished" (though it's not quite). We had our favorite videographer, Jordan Borrowman of Spectra Films, run through our home in the same format as last year. We love the comparison of the two side by side, and can't believe how much progress has been made. Take a look!

Things to note:

• While we've come a long way, our home is still in-progess. So when you see our not-so-great master bath or the occasional missing doorknob, bear with us. We love the unfinished nature of these videos, so we can look back on them later and say, "Whoa..."

• Our home has a lot of natural light, and during the day our lights are usually off. But for video tours, we turn them all on to make everything look just a little more home-y.

• We still have some progress posts to share about the girls' bathroom downstairs, but I hope you enjoyed the little peek into the finished space (that's right - it's finally done!).

• Day-to-day, I wouldn't call our home "messy" - more "lived in." We rarely feel reservations about people dropping by due to the lived in look, but for this video tour, we cleaned for 2 days straight.

• Because of Jules' pregnancy and so many other projects, we've literally only had 2 get-togethers out on our deck all summer. Cleaning weeks and weeks of neglect off of an outdoor space is a task, let me tell you. Thank Heavens for furniture with washable cushion covers and for weather-proof pillows.

• While we planned for the final shot to end on us playing in our new outdoor space, what wasn't planned was Charly. She always picks a spot to lay down where she can see all of us, no matter where we are. Because she's the world's greatest dog.

  1. Hi Chris & Julia! I am a new-ish reader and still getting caught up on your blog. I love it!! You have such a sweet home and family, and I totally love the way you include Charly as a full fledged family member. Thanks for such great posts!

  2. What color leather are you pottery barn chairs? Thinking of ordering them in the burnished saddle. Would you recommend them highly? I feel like pottery barn is expensive and not always the best quality, but I really love these sofa chairs! They're on sale today... your thoughts would be so appreciated

  3. I'm so obsessed with what you've done! Especially the lighting in the lower level of the house - that's such a tricky thing to get right, and you guys have nailed it! I'm taking notes for my future home and even things I can do now for my cramped NYC apt!

  4. Love your house, could you tell me the name and color of the woven wood blind in the dining room behind the white curtains?

  5. The house looks amazing, stunning, warm and cozy. You guys put in so much hard work and it shows. I LOVE your style. Just a quick question: What happened to the hanging planters in the kitchen? I noticed they weren't in the video. I recently bought some, but haven't hung them yet. Just curious to find out why they didn't work out for you long term.

  6. Love love love! What would you call your decorating style? Because it is so me..,but I never know what to call it when someone asks?

  7. Your home is so beautiful! And cohesive! Whenever I'm trying to figure out how to design a space that will look lovely but still appeal to my boyfriend, your blog is the first I turn to. Keep up the great work! I also love your podcast.

  8. I absolutely love your house and I'm pretty sure we are design twins.

In fact, your new powder pink bathroom is exactly the color I've been on the hunt for. Can you share the paint color? Thanks!

  9. Your home is so lovely and full of unique character/style. I actually find it very refreshing that you have spaces that are "in-progress". I get overwhelmed with how much I want to change in my home, but seeing the transformations in your home gives me hope that my gradual efforts will pay off eventually. Thank you for sharing and congratulations on the new addition to the family!

  10. I don't even have a blog, but WOW. I want a video like this when we're done our house. So so so great and so special.

  11. Just beautiful! Love seeing all your updates ...so many ideas and so much creativity! Curious about the change in rugs in your entry as we have been debating about what to put in ours. What did you do with the vintage runner you had there previously and how do you keep the light colored replacement clean in an entry way?

  12. Love what you have done to your home this year, it looks amazing! I paid a little extra attention to the beautifully styled shelves, dressers and tables and was thinking to myself: I wish I had the ability to do something like that. Would you consider doing a post about all your shelf, dresser and table styling? How do you plan, what to think about etc?

      1. Why did I cry at the end?!?!?!? Your back patio and side yard are EVERYTHING!!!!! Was that a potted white mum next to your outdoor couch??? Also, did you go with polished nickel or chrome for the bath sick faucets in the girls basement bathroom? Thank you in advance.

  13. Aw I love this one! I mean your home is so gorgeous and I can never get enough, but the ending with you and Polly off to the side watching the girls and Chris on the trampoline.... ah gives me all the feels ????????

  14. Oh my goodness, that ending with all 5 of you together brought tears to my eyes! Your home is beautiful. Everything looks so cozy and inviting.

  15. Bravo you guys!! I just love your home and how cozy it feels. You've given me so much inspiration over the year I've been following you. Thank you for opening up your house to us! ????

  16. Your home is beautiful! What a sweet look into your family life. It's nice to read that you "cleaned for 2 days" lol! The organization is inspiring!
    Thanks for sharing!

  17. It's absolutely gorgeous. So warm and inviting. You can tell it's filled with love. Adore the downstairs bathroom and your kitchen is so lovely. So much fun to see it all at once. xo

  18. I mean come ON!!!! That was the cutest ending to this tour!!! Love your style, it's so inspiring. House looks jaw dropping beautiful- AMAZING!

  19. Charly is my favorite part! I remember when Julia talked about getting her, and how she had never had a dog before and was slightly afraid of such a big one. It just goes to show, big dogs = gentle giants. But seriously, your house is so lovely. I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I'd love to have ANY of your rooms in my house (much less all of them)!

  20. Your home is just so so lovely and inspiring. Thank you for all that you do and for the time and effort you put forth to share it with us.

  21. Gorgeous. You've inspired me to clean my whole house at once and document it as proof. So hard with 3 littles, as you know!

Question for you. Our house also has 2 basement bedrooms with egress windows and I'm forever struggling with how to make the window wells prettier, but without turning it into a huge (or expensive) project. Have you guys considered any solutions to that? Might it even be on your list for this year (fingers crossed so that I can copy you!)?

  22. Love the house tour! I am obsessed with all your choices and think you guys make it look inviting and cozy, but in a really high end way. I agree- it is remarkable how many projects/changes you have been able to make this year with three precious little ladies! Love following along, love your blog, AND love your podcast!! Thanks for sharing!

  23. I just watched the 2017 video side by side with the 2016 video to see all the changes and I cannot believe how many projects you guys completed!! Astonishing, seriously. Your home is just spectacular! Thank you for posting this video, it was the highlight of my day hahaha.

  24. Your family is beautiful and so is your home and I love seeing the unfinished parts. I also think it is sweet that your master bathroom remains undone and your girls bedrooms/bathrooms are perfect. there is such sweetness in that...

  25. Ugh, such a sweet video! I love seeing the changes throughout your house and the final shot of your all playing on the trampoline was so heartwarming. Thanks for letting us into your home!

  26. Oh my goodness, this just makes me teary. What a beautiful home you've created, what talent you have, and what beauty it shows in how you love your family. xoxo

  27. I'm not a dog person at all, but sweet Charly watching over you guys was so darling.

Could you do a post sometime about what realistic upkeep and cleaning is on an outdoor space? I feel like my back porch is always gross, and get annoyed when I "just sprayed it off at the beginning of summer. Mine might be a case of unrealistic expectations.

    1. We'd be happy to. The only reason we haven't is because it varies so much from region to region. We don't deal with a lot of rain or pollen, but our trees do spray a light sticky sap everywhere.

  28. Love seeing your beautiful home, and especially loved seeing the past videos and posts! So inspiring and encouraging to know it didn't happen overnight as we are in the midst of a huge fixer upper renovation as well! :) Thanks for sharing and excited to follow along as it continues to evolve!!

  29. I LOVE these videos. I do have a question, where did your Serena and Lily rattan chair go that was in your room? (is it weird that I noticed it was gone?)

    1. Right now, it's stored away. I love that chair but we put a much needed mirror in that corner for now. Things are always moved around though so don't be surprised if it pops up again.

  30. Such a beautiful home!! I absolutely love the ending shot with all of you playing outside. It was really sweet and added such a nice touch! Thank you for sharing!

  31. From last year to this year there has been a ton of progress! The ending of the video made me teary eyed seeing your cute family together. Great video!

  32. Absolutely stunning! As gorgeous as your home is, my favorite part of the video was seeing your beautiful family, complete with sweet Charly, enjoying your new outdoor play space - it gave me happy chills!

  33. It's so amazing to see how your home has evolved. It's absolutely beautiful and cozy :) Great job! And thank you for sharing that sweet family shot at the end <3

  34. Beautiful! We copied your powder room in our house. Just wondering if you paint your interior doors and trim? If so, what finish do you use? They looked rather satin(ish) and do you use a brush, roll or paint sprayer?

  35. I would move in in a heart beat! You both are so talented and I am always inspired when I read your blog, listen to your podcast or see updates on instagram!! Well done!! And congrats on the newest beautiful addition to your family!!

  36. Ugh I loved that video so much. You have such a wonderful home and even through the video, you can feel the sense of comfort you've built there. You have such a sweet family. I hope that our home feels like this too.

  37. Your home looks absolutely fantastic. The little unfinished bits that you see are not noticeable to the rest of us. :) Your sweet baby girl is the best ending to the post ever. I cannot believe how much Julia was able to accomplish, given her pregnancy...and the third! I was SO exhausted with my third pregnancy! Congratulation to both of you on your beautiful family and your wonderful home. Thanks for sharing!
