There's something about the kids going back to school that initiates the start of fall for me. I get the itch for cooler weather, cozy blankets, and pumpkins on porches. So, I'm inching my decor toward fall, room by room, to try and inspire some fall spirit. Today, we're visiting the bonus room to play a game of I Spy, Fall Edition. Also, keep scrolling for a list of our must-watch movies for this upcoming fall and Halloween season.
When it comes to seasonal home decor, I like to keep things fairly simple. You don't need to run to Target and buy a bunch of knickknacks and signs (although you can). Instead, I focus on incorporating patterns, artwork, textures, and finishes that feel like fall but aren't so literal. Transitioning the bonus room to fall is one of the easier spaces because it's already full of cozy textiles and prints. This is where we have our weekend movie nights and spend time snuggled up as a family, so we're not short on throw pillows and blankets, but I did swap in a few extra cozy ones.
I didn't get too crazy with pumpkins, but I did add a few throughout the room, including this darling wicker pumpkin. Can you spot them all?

This vignette is quite possibly my favorite moment in the bonus room. I love the way that it breathes fall into the room ever so subtly. The basket of blankets was easily thrown together and immediately brought cozy vibes to the space. And we all know one of my favorite ways to decorate for fall is with fall branches! But even the plaid, pleated lampshade is such a fall textile. Light a woodsy fall candle, and you're set.
Naturally, I had to update the Frame TV art. This digital art with the cute little pups doesn't scream fall, but something about the warm, muted colors makes me want to curl up in that vintage leather chair with a blanket and a good book. And our girls already picked which pup they each are.

One of my 5 simple fall decor tips is to set out a bowl of seasonal fruit. While a bowl of apples or pears might make sense in the kitchen or dining room, I swapped in a bowl of caramel corn, mostly for a photo but also for a movie night!

Layering in blankets and throws, and even a plaid jacket (pictured below) goes such a long way in decorating for Fall.

Every Friday night, we have a family movie night. Chris usually puts together a charcuterie board, and we all snuggle up. It's a great time to show the girls some classics, and around this time of year, we're craving some movies with crunchy leaves and sweaters. We put together a bucket list of fall and Halloween movies for you to save and refer to all season long! All of these are "family-friendly," but not all of them are for little ones. Did any of your favorites make the list?
Fall is my favorite time of the year. I’m a bit early this year though. More so than normal as I am literally drinking my pumpkin spice coffee in my Nightmare Before Christmas Sally mug as I write this. Love all the cozy vibes. Bring it on!
So cozy … a plaid blanket and a fall scented candle are the perfect fall decor for me. & thank you for the movie list… its perfect 🍁!
Sunflowers are in full bloom, the locusts are loud and linen is still required to beat the heat. Staying present to enjoy the *current season is hard with this constant rush to consume with the buying cycles.
Where in the world do you live that there are locusts?
Locusts are grasshoppers. I live in the northeast.
Amen
I totally agree. I avoid even going in stores right now because they are rushing me out of summer when school hasn’t even begun (here in Seattle we start Sept 6 like schools should after Labor Day!).
It’s hot here too but I’m all for the suspension of reality that fall weather is near.
