There's a little grove of four trees on the north side of our yard that was inhabited by an old fire pit for who knows how long. We knew we wanted to tear that thing out--although we'd love to add a firepit elsewhere on our property, the idea of a fire in the middle of four trees just didn't seem like the best place for it.
A couple months ago, Wayfair contacted us about recreating a favorite childhood summer tradition--and we knew right away what we wanted to do. Chris and I both have fond memories of hammocks in our childhood--and we thought this would be the perfect spot for one. We spent a Saturday clearing out the old pit and debris and ash and filled in the hole, five minutes hanging a hammock and almost every night enjoying it.
It's the Twin Oaks Hammock from Wayfair in Crystal, which looks like a light gray online, but apparently is tan in person. We don't mind. I actually like that the earth-toned look blends in well in this grove of trees. Happy accident! Greta loves us to swing her really hard on the hammock, which we do. It holds up to 450 pounds, so we often all pile in there together and although I always seem to be the last one out--I give Chris threatening looks about tipping or flipping it. So far. So good. (Those were not good memories. Ha!)
And sometimes, best of all, after the girls go to bed, Chris and I sneak out with a laptop and watch movies. Or just talk.
You can see those pictures along with some other summer memories here.
It's a small update, but something we couldn't imagine life, especially our summer, without now.
Have your own summer memory you want to recreate? We are giving away a $100 gift card to Wayfair on instagram today! Head over there (@chrislovesjulia) for the details.
I second that! Hammocks are total fun and for me it is also nostalgic as they occupy most of my childhood memories. They are fun because as we grow up, we realize that it can also be the most romantic place in a home :) Serving the twin purpose, Hammocks will remain fun for your girls and personal space for you and your husband!

I'm sitting here reminiscing about the hammock my family had. It was the woven/webbing kind. My sister and I used to wrap each other up in it like a cocoon and then try to flip it all the way over. I can't remember now if we ever succeded... Good times! Need to go call my sister now!
I so wish we had room for a hammock! Maybe one day...
Sign me up!! This looks magical!
Looks relaxing! Wish I had big trees to hang a hammock from! I love that pink and red pillow- can you share the source for it please? Thanks!!!

What a great idea for your yard, and I love the photo of Chris and the girls in there!
Hi there. Love the hammock. Did you do any excavating under it to clean out that area? Let me know if you have done anything to remedy the mosquitos! Just wondering how you can be outside for that long in the evening without getting bit. Not sure about your mosquitos but we have a ton in Central New York!!!!
I'm curious like Lindsay - What about mosquitos!? They've been terrible in Iowa this year. We haven't been able to enjoy the outdoors much at all because of them :(
Oh! I know what you mean! Growing up in Pittsburgh, being out after dark would result in a slew of bites, but here...and you're going to hate me...there really isn't a mosquito season. It is very dry and the rain is VERY infrequent. Near lakes and canals, there might be a different story but mosquitos just don't run rampant around these desert-y parts like they do in hot and humid places.
