Our Wicked Weekend.

August 25, 2012

My parents are really good at planning a "retreat" once every quarter.  Us?  Well, our last getaway was a year and a half ago (you can read about it here).  So yesterday, since Chris got tickets for us to see Wicked, we felt like it was the perfect excuse to make a weekend of it...err, an overnighter of it.  Wicked was showing just an hour away from our house, but we got a hotel, sitter, dinner reservations and packed the most we could into our quick getaway--which is surprisingly a ton when you don't have a two-year old with you.

There was shopping.  We had this insane idea to not bring any clothes to wear to the show and just find something to wear while bouncing from store to store yesterday afternoon.  I did find a new skirt and blouse, but I ended up wearing my back-up dress I stashed in my bag as a just-in-case-our-crazy-plan-doesn't-work.  I live so far from the edge, I know.

After shopping, we met our good friends for sushi at Takashi.  It was delicious.  When I am out for sushi, I love looking for a roll that is slightly spicy and has some citrus worked in.  This roll, the sunshine, was just. that.

And my mouth just started watering. Somehow I didn't snap a pic of our friends (we love ya, Doug and Aly!), so here is yet, another photo of us.  Post sushi.  I think we're filling our photos-of-us quota for the year with this post.

And the night was still young!  After dinner we walked back to our hotel--that is one fabulous thing about staying right downtown, we walked everywhere--and got ready for Wicked in 20 minutes.  And when I say "got ready in 20 minutes," I mean that we got changed in 10 and then spent the next 10 minutes trying to take a photo of ourselves.

The classic mirror snapshot and camera on top of a box on top of a flipped-over trashcan on top of a table with the self timer did the trick.  I knew I wouldn't be able to take my camera into the theater (theatre?) so I left it behind and when we got to our seats (they were up there! and not next to each other, but a few blessed souls rearranged their seating so I could at least sit right in front of Chris), I gestured to Chris to take a picture with his phone of the stage.

He took that right before he got reprimanded that "there are no photos allowed in here!"  Well, we only took one more during intermission (maybe I don't live that far from the edge).  By that time, we were both completely floored by the show.  In love with it.  It's amazing and life-changing.  I also felt really silly wearing a red dress.  Why didn't anyone tell me I should have worn green like 80% of the audience.

After the show, there was a line forming outside to take a picture with the Wicked poster...  .... which felt weird, but at the same time, I kind of wanted one but would never wait in line for it.  We moved to the edge of the sidewalk and although there were lots of people in between us and the poster, we managed to snap (another!) picture of ourselves.  #tallpeople

This morning, before heading home, we stopped for breakfast at The Park Cafe. You Salt Lake City people, how do you not eat here at least once a week?!

It could be because Chris and I are participating in a health challenge and today is our day off, but we were savoring and enjoying and commenting on every bite.  So good!

Chris got b's and g's and I got french toast foolishness aaaanndddd a new art addiction.  They had the coolest posters all over the whole dive-ish place:

When we walked out of The Park and saw this, I turned to Chris and said, "We should really live here."

I'm a sucker for mature trees and parks and historic homes and out-of-this-world potato hash. On our way home, we made one more stop.  I'll give you a hint:

And that, my friends, is what we call a great overnighter.  More on our Ikea haul on Monday!

  1. Love your outfit on the brunch day- where's the cream top from? Desperately need it- and are those black jeans? Jeggings? So cute!

  2. Oh man. I wish I could describe the show to you. To everyone. It was so moving and unlike anything I have ever seen or experienced. I knew the songs--or a few of them from the soundtrack--but to actually see them in context and hear them in REAL life is sooo powerful. The scene with "Defying Gravity" is performed right before intermission and it is....wow. To understand that song changed my life! The talent of the cast is out of this world. If you ever EVER get the opportunity to see Wicked, take it!

  3. Jules it looks like a great get away! Yeah why stay in line for a poster when you can photoshop it in...Geez peeps. i wanna hear more about the show! All I know about Wicked are the songs "Popular" and "Defying Gravity"

  4. I got the soundtrack a couple weeks ago so I could get a little familiar with the songs, but yes, they mean infinitely more in context. Greta did really well, thankfully. I think we have crossed over the hardest part and she seems to be staying in her bed more often than not lately. We had our go-to 11-year old babysitter, Tiffany, watch Greta in the afternoon, and then Chris's sister, Erica, came over after work around 7:30 and stayed the night. We were sooo grateful it all worked out. We were worried (especially about Greta sleeping) but it was worth it to get away. Meagan, if you ever EVER get the opportunity to see Wicked, you must take it!

  5. SO FUN!!! You guys are our hero couple. All these retreats are making us jealous! Someday....someday....dang it we just need to move to Charlotte! or closer to my parents. I am so glad you guys were able to do a overnight trip too because after your busy summer, I am sure you appreciated some quiet alone time and not worrying about Miss Greta! I wonder how she did in her big girl bed with your sitter (wasn't it Chris' sister?)?

I hope Wicked was amazing!! You MUST buy the soundtrack. I haven't seen it, but I LOVE the soundtrack. I sing like every song and pretend I know whats going on....(loser haha).

  6. first, you are really pretty.
second, what a fun slc trip! Takashi is my FAVORITE sushi place. so good! and The Park was a really good choice too!
third, ya...move here!!!!! yes, yes do it.

  7. I love Wicked! I have seen it twice and want to see it again. Good for you for taking time away for just the two of you

  8. Oh I always think that if it's cute, I have no bias toward where it's from. :) But sadness! can't find that top on Coldwater Creek- is it just me?

  9. Fun post! Isn't the Sunshine Roll awesome!?? Added Park Cafe to my to-try list for sure... We too love our overnight stays in downtown Salt Lake and can't wait to see your IKEA post!

  10. I'm so disappointed I didn't get to see you in your red dress, I LOVE it! So glad you loved the show, we were a little worried about how much we droned on about it, haha. Also- sad we didn't run into you at IKEA as that it where the majority of our Saturday was spent :)
So great to see you guys!
