We are plugging along in Greta's room. Because there are so many elements going into it--we really are stripping the room of almost everything--it is taking a lot longer than we had hoped. And then there's the fact that Greta-the-Great sleeps in there every night, which is when we tend to get the brunt of our work done. But on the positive side, decisions are being made and projects are a-happenin' that we can't wait to share. The biggest behind-the-scenes research has been for the grasscloth wallpapered accent wall (check out the whole mood board for Greta's room
here). It has taken weeks, but we have finally made some progress.
Two weeks ago, I packed up Little and several dumdums and headed to Lowe's. Well, first we headed to Home Depot, but ours didn't have a wallpaper section. Get with it, HD! So we went to Lowe's and looked through all their grasscloth wallpaper books and I fell in love with two--both of which turned out costing a small fortune, even though we were only doing on little wall.
Hmph. When I asked about ordering samples and/or rolls, no one really seemed to be able to help me. "Oh...um....you want to....buy this???" I got the good old fashion run-around before I threw my hands up in the air and left. I ended up going home and ordering samples the new-age way--online. From Home Depot, because I couldn't find samples on Lowe's website. Maybe that was the same problem the employees were having?? I would have loved to support a local wallpapering company or even a not-big-box store, but the reality is--we're on a budget with this revamp, so Home Depot it is.
The samples arrived Monday and I hung them up immediately on Greta's wall and stared and stared and squinted and stared. Of course every screen is going to make these look different, but check 'em out:
First impressions?? I will say top, middle immediately got nixed. And then it got harder. Bottom left didn't feel warm enough and top left felt too solid (although it is really beautiful in person). It came down to the top right and the bottom right and as of now...
The bottom right is winning. It is actually a faux grasscloth (not all of the samples were)--which I love and hate. It is completely scrubbable and durable which will be great and kinda necessary for a two year old's room and it is very affordable, but although it has the look of real grasscloth, the actual texture isn't there. I'm going to stare at it a little more before I pull the plug. What sample were you rooting for? Where do you stand on faux grasscloth?

This is so interesting to me because when you say wallpaper, I think of my border wallpaper with ballerinas in my room growing up that I picked off. My mother was SO mad. She spent so much on it and stupid me, oblivious to the fact, ruined it all. It is still a sore subject :-) Regardless, there are SO MANY awesome wallpapers now a days! Is it pretty easy to put up? Curious to see what you choose, and now that I am all about GG, I love that it is inspired after Serena.
This makes me so excited to do grasscloth in our dining room one day, hopefully in the close-ish future!
Hey Julie, I think if you are going with grasscloth you have to go real because the texture is the best part. Have you tried wallpaper outlet stores? You can get remnents really cheap. Our entire house is done in remnents, they are a fraction of the price. Have a great Christmas
I actually like the bottom left. It looks to have a bit more color variation than the other samples and I think it would look good with the cub print fabric and gold polka dot sheets.
I was rooting for the top middle AKA the one you cut first haha It looks smokey and gray on my monitor and I thought it'd look nice with the wall color but since it got nixed, I'll say bottom right!
Top right. :)
Funny, The top right and the bottom right are the two faux grasscloths. Hahaha. I think they are the same price.
Righhhttt?!?!!?
All my thoughts exactly. Tough call!
I didn't know Sherwin Williams carried wallpaper! So good to know! Thanks Jackie.
That's a tough call. My first impression fave was the top right. If the price difference is significant, I'd go with the cheaper, easier to clean one. If they're close on price, I'd go for the real deal. Either way, I think it will look great and I'm excited to see it!
bottom right
I completely understand the faux dilema. We've used marble look alike porcelain and
wood-look vinyl planks for various practical reasons and thankfully we've been really happy, but sometimes you just need the real thing. But since it's a kids room... I would be tempted to cheat on the side of scrubability.
We just did an accent wall with grasscloth wallpaper and love it. We had the same problem as you at HD and Lowes. We ended up going to Sherwin Williams. They have several books of wallpaper they will let you borrow and take home. They had a huge variety of textures and colors, their prices were very reasonable and it took less than a week to ship to the house. It's definitely worth a look. Good luck!
