The Bed (And Gold Dot Sheets) Has Landed.

January 2, 2013
We spent a portion of our new year's day doing something we have been itching to cross off our list.  Hint. Big hint:

We moved Greta's vintage twin bed from storage to her room and moved her crib-turned-toddler bed out.  New Year. New bed. No more binky? One thing at a time! But let me rewind a minute and uncover what is underneath those covers. We thought it would be smart to keep the bed as low to the ground as possible--since our girl, although tall for her age, is still a toddler and if she did fall off the bed, we didn't want her falling too far. So instead of a traditional foundation mattress, we went with Ikea's Sultan Lade slatted bed base for a mere $20.

The verdict is still out on whether it is going to work for this bed.  The side rails straighten out before reaching the headboard and footboard (for some unknown, why-would-they-do-that!? reason) so this is as far as we could stretch the slats.  Consequently, the mattress has very little support at the head and foot area which might be fine for a 35 lb girl--or might not be. Time will tell. As soon as we put the new mattress on her bed, Greta hopped on and started breaking it in.

Greta caught a really bad case of bronchitis (she cannot win this winter!) so she has been sporting whatever is comfiest these days--in case you looked at that photo and raised your eyebrows really high. Back to business. The gold dot sheets from The Land of Nod were waiting for us when we arrived home from our holiday with our families. And even though they are technically for Greta, it felt like Christmas morning for me all over again.  They are gorgeous.  And, um, props to Land of Nod for showcasing their sense of humor.
Do not collect $200.  We paired the gold spotted sheets--that shimmer with the light--with a white ribbed duvet from Ikea.  We actually have the same one, king-sized, on our bed.  So yeah, we like it.

Confession. I don't iron our bedding.  But after seeing this next photo, I'm rethinking that decision.

Wrinkles aside (my bad), the sheet set is charming.  And the sheet set, with the vintage princess bed--double charming.

Greta's reaction was something like a really high squeal and, "Oooo! That's so cute!" Which melted our hearts and reminded me why we're doing this. Here's hoping she isn't too excited about her new bed, she can't sleep.  Really, really hoping for that one.
And because now I am curious, do you iron your bedding?
Psst. The Land of Nod was so generous in sending us their gold dot sheet set to use for Greta's bed.  They offered it up after we included it in Greta's mood board, so obviously we loved it and would have used it anyway.  Although they sent us the sheets, they didn't pay us to write a positive review. But seriously...I kind of want some for our bed now.

  1. I have the Ofeila Vass duvet from Ikea, and it's ripped in a few places. Cannot for the life of me figure out of it's a defect or if it's ripping in my washing machine or something. Have you or anyone else experienced this? (I've had it for a year so I don't think Ikea will take it back, but I love it otherwise!)

    1. Sad. Sad. Sad! We have had ours in the master bedroom for about that long with no rips, but our Ikea cover on our Klippan ripped and got holes the second time in the wash. :/ Anyone else have experience?

  2. I iron my pillowcases with a pear linen spray. They're what shows, anyway. I think it's worth it, and I have to iron my husband's work shirts anyway, so I may as well make something I lay my head on smell nice.

Don't worry, I'm not crazy - it's not worth it to me to iron the rest of the sheets, although I will iron a duvet cover when it comes out of the wash.

  3. that is one fabulous big-girl bed!
on the subject of the binky (know as a nukie at our place), we warned our little one, Violet, that she would have to give it up when she turned 3. we warned her well in advance! on the big day she got to make a trip to build-a-bear and make a new bear she named Pinky. once we got home i took the nukie, cut off the rubber sucked on part, and sewed the handle right on the bears face. Pinky has a nukie and Violet does not! Pinky also has a very convenient handle for dragging all over the house (depending on your pacifier type). We are just about a week shy of 1 year since and there have been no troubles with her wanting her nukie...she kind of has it. Pinky is looking a bit ragged and the nukie has had to be reattached a couple times, but so far so good!

  4. Love those sheets! So sweet :-)

I don't don't use a top sheet, and don't iron the fitted bottom sheet either. However, I have several different duvet covers and matching pillow cases and change (and wash) those weekly. Then once every 6 weeks or so, I take all the washed covers to my neighbourhood laundromat that has a industrial-sized steam roller press and run them all through. 15 minutes later and I have 6 duvet cover (and pillowcases) perfectly pressed. I let them cool down, fold them up and then store them in my linen chest at home. Total time 20 minutes, plus 5 minutes t get there and back.

They looks so much better and feel sooooooo luxurious when you slip into bed, I love it! Well worth the time spent in my opinion.

I used to iron them weekly at home before I discovered the laundromat's press. Took more time but it's an indulgence I felt I was worthy of! For the record, I also iron the odd linen shirt or trouser in the summertime but absolutely nothing else!

  5. I never iron anything if I can help it. Especially sheets. I love Land of Nod! We have a trundle and bed from them, and they are great!

  6. I just ironed my sheets for the first time a few weeks ago. My crinkly edged pillow cases and bed sheet were getting to me. I have been reading in all the design mags the fresh pressed sheets are a luxury and by golly they are right :). It makes me feel like I am in a nice hotel. And since it cost $0 to pull out my iron...bring it on!

  7. Love love love the sheets and want them for our bed too!!! And this headboard is seriously an incredible buy. Can't wait to get started on our master bedroom and guest room! Can't wait to see what else you do with her big girl room!

  8. No way would I ever iron sheets. In fact, I buy winkle-free clothes whenever possible to do as little ironing as possible.

Those sheets are so cute, and do go perfectly with the princess bed. Nice choice!

  9. They now make a box spring that is only about 2-3 inches deep to use for a lower look on beds. We found ours at RC Willey for my son's twin size bed. It may be a better option than the slats.

...and no. I do NOT iron my sheets. That would be like ironing my underwear. No one sees it - unless you are blogging about it. ;)

    1. I just went on RC Willey's website to check that foundation out because it sounds like it may be the perfect solution, but no dice. I might have to make a trip to see if they have something in stores.

  10. People iron their sheets?? Good grief, I thought I was doing well because I wash them weekly!! ;) Soooo... do they make those sheets for grown up beds? Because I'm kind of in love with them.

    1. There is just no place for a board to rest since the rails completely straighten out. That's the problem. :/ Last night it didn't seem to be a problem, but we'll see if we need to come up with a different solution down the road.

  11. I never iron my sheets. Sometimes I wish I did... like when I put freshly laundered sheets on the bed and am disappointed to see wrinkles. I just have a hard time taking the time to do it.
By the way, the new sheets are so cute. I'd like them for MY room!

  12. I've never met someone who irons their sheets. You're just sleeping on them and getting them wrinkly anyway.

The sheets are super cute.. perfect for a little girl!

  13. I dont iron sheets either, but I have the same duvet cover and use a steamer on that when it comes out of the dryer. Good luck with Greta in the big girl bed- we'll be making that transition soon too. Everything looks adorable so far!

  14. Beautiful!! No way do I iron my sheets. Who has time for that?? Haha I feel that washing my bedding weekly is already more than most people accomplish. Cnt wait to see all the changes to the room. :-)
