Last year at this time I posted about a family tree I made as a DIY gift idea. You can see the whole post here. I just used black india ink to script the tree:

And then filled in my family members’ names with a black gel pen.

The wood frame (from Target!) really makes it gift-worthy. Since that post, I have been receiving requests to put the blank tree in my Etsy shop. Although I feel confident you, too, could make this tree with ink and a small brush (I believe that so much!), I decided to make it available as a free printable. (Merry Christmas!!) It will print up to a 24×30, but I suggest keeping it around an 8×10–or just print it in standard paper size right from home and use your best penmanship to fill it in with your family names.

  1. Thanks so much, Julia!

I was seriously at a loss over what to get my mother in law for Christmas. I’m not sure whether I’ll make my own tree or download yours, but either way I so appreciate the idea!

Merry Christmas to your precious family :)

  2. I say in the sweetest way that I am so bummed to see this post today. You see, I loved your tree so much when I first saw it last year that I worked so hard making one for my new sister in law. I am artistic more in music and culinary arts, so it took many, many drafts to create something I was finally okay gifting to my family (and paired with an oversized Target frame was really the kicker). Of course, it was a huge hit and very special, but oh MAN that would have been so very much easier to print this and fill in the names ;)

Your artwork is so beautiful and I think it is so generous of you to make this a free printable. Perhaps I will make a Julia-tree for my other side of the family and enjoy the relief of tree-drawing pressure this year :)

Actually, I might make one for OUR home.

A very blessed Christmas to you and your beautiful family, Julia!!

  3. I was inspired and made mine last night. I’m going to give it to my Mom. I’m also giving her the pen and the frame separate from the tree so that she can add in other names before putting it in the frame. It occurred to me that there are many people that make your family and add richness to your lives. I know she would want to add them into it as well. My tree looks incredible – thanks for believing that I could do it myself.
    Merry Christmas!

  4. Beautiful project! I have to know… Chris and Julie? Julia? Julie? Julie and Julia, that movie?? Haha do tell.

Also, looks like you need to add a tiny, Faye-sized branch this Christmas! :)

    • Haha! You have a good eye. This was for my side of the family and although my real name is Julia, my family all calls me “Julie” and Chris calls me Jules and his family calls me Julia, as well as most people that aren’t related to me–except if they knew me as a little kid, then they might call me Julie, too. And then I have an uncle that calls me Ja-ules! I answer to any of the above.

      • Haha thanks for the reply! For some reason I always thought of Julia and Julie as 2 separate names, and never as nicknames for each other! Makes sense now. I’m still Jess/Jessica/Jessie/Jessa based on who you ask as well.
        Have a merry Christmas! :)
