A few weeks ago, in this Casual Friday post, I mentioned I was on the hunt for some curtains for the playroom. I narrowed it down to two; these more masculine/sophisticated/slightly 90s in a good way (I think) plaid drapes or these simple and whimsical pom-pom trim curtains. I actually think both could have worked, but I had some plain white Ikea RITVA curtains so I thought I’d start there.
Once I hung them, I got a little worried because although I do love a tone on tone look (white walls + white curtains doesn’t scare me) this was falling flat. I picked up some large black pom pom trim from the craft store for $2.99 a yard (similar, for cheaper, here) and invited my friend Ellen, owner of this cute Etsy shop, over to help me sew it on.
Once upon a time, in our last home, I added smaller, yellow pom-pom trim to curtains in Greta’s room with hot glue (you can read that post here) and it worked like a charm, but it’s always fun for me to try new methods. Running it through a sewing machine seemed a little faster and possibly more secure through washing.
The last thing we added were these natural woven shades to warm the whole thing up a little bit and add a bit more texture.
It feels just right for the playroom side of the space. Still sophisticated side with a dash of whimsey and these only cost about $50 for both. Adding pom-pom trim to curtains is not anything new, and yet it still feels so fresh in here.

Do you know what size the actual Pom Poms are?
Shoot, I don’t. They look about 3/4″
Just now listening to your podcast from this week. I think the Pom Pom curtains are super cute – but don’t love them in the space. Just recently you inspired me to take a look around my house to things I did because I love something on Pinterest – or in someone else’s home. It is hard sometimes to say – “This isn’t working in my space”. Anyways – props to you! This is why you are so relate-able.
I love the touch of whimsy they add while still looking sophisticated
I been looking for how you hang your shades do you hang them above your trim? How would you handle a bay window?
I think hanging it inside the trim works too! Maybe a few small shades? I just didn’t want to go through ordering a custom size for this window, so a little wider is easy to just mount on the outside.
Love this! I am sure you are super busy but still waiting for some sort of reply to my email:) would love some info even if you are backed up four months! (Crossing my fingers!)
