Outdoor rugs aren’t just for adding traction to your deck! If you’ve ever wondered how to make them sing in your outdoor oasis, you’re in the right place.
When I was dreaming up our outdoor rug collection with Loloi, I knew I wanted something different. We’re all about that moody, modern, traditional vibe around here, and I wanted our rugs to truly support the outdoor space, not compete with it. Think of them as the perfect foundation, letting your gorgeous outdoor seating, the ambiance of your lighting, and all those beautiful natural elements really shine. They’re the quiet workhorses that pull everything together.
Sometimes it can be hard to picture what the rugs will look like in a designed outdoor space. So I put together some design inspiration for backyard (or front porch!) spaces that are as appealing as they are timeless!
The European Courtyard

Providence Graphite/Sand 5×7′ | Chaise Lounge | Wall Fountain | Topiary | Urn Planter | Lantern Sconce
I can absolutely see our traditional checkered rug as the grounding element in a little vignette “moment” you create in your backyard or even on an apartment balcony or small patio.
The Southern Retreat

Providence Charcoal/Dove 8×10′ | Dining Table & Chairs | Pergola | String Lights | Melamine Plates | Tablecloth | Climbing Jasmine | Outdoor Pendant
I love how an outdoor rug elevates a dining area. Throw in a fun striped tablecloth and some sweetly scented jasmine and everyone will rave about your entertaining prowess—and you barely lifted a finger. It is important to get a rug that suits your table size and can hold all of the chair legs—check our visual rug size guide for tips!
The Coastal Hideaway

Providence Wheat/Charcoal 8×10‘ | Outdoor Sofa | Coffee Table | Marble Candle Hurricanes | Trellis | Outdoor Pillow | Temperature Gauge | Faux Cypress | Planter
A simple geometric weave on an outdoor rug adds coziness to a sitting area. Depending on the size of the couch, I’d try an 8×10 rug or larger so it creates a “room” for chats or enjoying a novel outdoors on a lazy afternoon. This design gives off a California casual vibe with the emphasis on creams and warm browns, but it feels elevated with the stone, trellis, and vintage-style planter.
The Classic Cape Entry

Providence Charcoal/Natural 4×6′ | Doormat | Topiaries | Planters | Outdoor Chair (similar) | Outdoor Pillow | “No Soliciting” Sign | House Numbers | Door Knocker | Lantern Sconce
Don’t forget to use a outdoor rug as a layering piece in the 4×6 size! I love how this one has a solid interior that makes a custom-like statement for an entry when paired with a coir mat. Adding some crisp navy stripes, gold accents, and structured black iron to this design creates a front porch that blends traditional elegance and relaxed comfort.
With all the amazing easy-to-clean, easy-to-care-for benefits of an outdoor rug, you’ll wonder why you don’t use them inside as well! Which is your favorite look of the bunch?
These ideas bring so much life and structure to outdoor spaces it’s like designing a living room under the sky! The styling tips are easy to follow and make a big impact.
