The 9 Things We Snagged From the Big Macy's Sale

February 15, 2018

This post is sponsored by Macy's.

I mentioned a couple weeks ago, that Macy's was having a huge home sale where you can save, 30-50% + Extra 20% off Home with promo code PRES. It's the last week of the sale (ends 2/19) and I wanted to share the amazing steals we snagged before it's too late.

1. Martha Stewart Collection Collector's Enameled Cast Iron Round Dutch Oven. We got an 8qt in White (normally $229, on sale for $82) and a 2 qt in Oyster (normally $99, on sale for $35). An enameled cast iron dutch oven are Chris's most used pots--of all time! If you follow him on Instagram, you probably have noticed he uses one nearly every night for literally everything. Roasts, soups, fried chicken, braising. And he's excited to use the smaller one for family sized side dishes like scalloped potatoes, mac and cheese, baked ziti, etc.

2. When we showed off our new engineer prints last week, I got so many questions about the throw on our couch! I picked it up from the sale! It's this Lucky Brand Tassel throw (normally $120, on sale for $55) and it's even more beautiful in person.

3. One of the main things I was looking when shopping the sale was bedding for the cabin--and I found the perfect quilt! But for some reason, I accidentally only bought 1 sham (they are sold separately) so don't mind that in the photo below--another is on its way! I got the Canyonlands 100% Cotton Embroidered Full/Queen Quilt (normally $300, on sale for $115). The oversized tassel waffle print throw at the bottom of the bed is also from the sale. (normally $130, on sale for $62).

4. We've had a KitchenAid mixer forever, (they're on sale, too) but never got too much into the attachments. Why!? This is probably not news to anyone else out there, but they're amazing! We're not huge bakers, so our mixer didn't get used as often as we'd like, but attachments are opening our eyes big time. We got the Fresh Prep Slicer/Shredder one (normally $80, on sale for $45) and do you even know how fast we can shred a whole block of cheese without fearing for our knuckles now? Real fast. Slicing for salads just got a lot easier, too.

5. The last thing I'll share is this Enameled Cast Iron 5 qt. Wok that Chris won't stop raving about (normally $139, on sale for $50). I got him a non-stick Wok a few years ago but this one is so heavy and the cast iron allows the pot to heat really evenly. Plus, the lid is oven safe which he always appreciates.

I rounded up all of our purchases below (still waiting for that air fryer to get here and my mouth is already watering), but there's even more home, kitchen, bed and bath, dining and entertaining, luggage, and furniture sales on their site.

  1. Hi Chris (& Julia but this question is more for Chris!), I ordered the enameled cast iron wok w/ lid for my husband and it looks promising, except that we read all the care instructions and it seems they really warn you not to use anything but medium-low heat..."When cooking remember to use low to medium heat. High heat may damage or discolor cookware" Have you had to be really careful about the heat you use and not use high heat, or is this more about martha stewart collection not wanting to be liable for discoloration or breakage or something?

We were planning on doing beef stir fry but we usually use a high heat to sear the steak...

  2. I love the quilt! Is it thick enough to not need another blanket underneath? I’ve never used a quilt before so I’m not sure how to appropriately layer for guests. Thank you!

    1. I guess that depends on how cold it is where you are. Our cabin is in the mountains so it's pretty cold during the winters, so we layer. But during the summer I imagine it would be warm enough on its own.

  3. I'm looking for a reason to purchase another size in dutch oven....b/c that price is just so good. What are some things Chris would use the 2 qt. dutch oven for? I have a large family with 5 teens and two tweens (adoption makes all that crazy possible), so I'm usually in the huge size of pots. Just curious about the smaller...??? Thanks in advance!

    1. And one more question for Chris...I know you have posted about your beloved knives before, but for me - the average homemaker, large family, ginormous eaters, I cannot justify a whole slew of dreamy knives. I do cook most of our meals from scratch and do a lot of chopping. If there is one knife or two knives you could recommend, in a "good" (not chef quality) brand, what would it/they be? Thanks again!

      1. I would still stick with Wusthof, but go for one of their more entry-level knives. The Santoku knife is designed for cooks who prefer an up and down chop, while the Cook's knife is good for the rock chop that is more of a sliding back and forth while keeping the nose of the knife on the board. If you invest in one quality knife, I would suggest one of those. Really versatile.

    2. I use the smaller ones for sides, like baked mac & cheese (or other pastas), creamed spinach with bacon, braised cabbage etc.. I also use them for date night cooking when it's just Jules and myself.

      1. Thanks so much for replying! I have the cook's knife on my Christmas wishlist and am contemplating the smaller for sides as you mentioned.

  4. Hi,
Thanks for sharing these goodies, however it doesn't appear that coupon code, HOME works. I'm trying to buy a few things from your post and it is saying "The item(s) in your Shopping Bag don't qualify for this promotion. See Exclusions."
    Just an FYI!

    1. Hey Cynthia, I ran into the same thing, even trying the code "PRES" on the Macy's homepage. After a 30 min wait on hold, the rep said that anything that is a "Limited Time special", which I didn't see right above the sale price, isn't able to use a code with for further discount. I hope that helps. Still, it's a great price!

  5. Has Chris ever done a post about taking care of his cast iron? My husband loves them and we think we found a good routine that will help them last awhile but it would be great to hear what he does!

  6. Oooo could you speak to the quilt? The Macy's posting and pick look more light beige w/ grey, but your pic reads more white-white to me. Any insight? THANKS!!!

My Storage Hack for Organizing Christmas Decorations

Every year when I pack up the decorations after Christmas, I collect all of the garlands together in one box, I get all the candlesticks together in another box, and all my nativity sets go into their own box. We label the boxes "garlands," "candles," "nativity sets,"...which seems great until you remember that you have […]

Cranberry-Glazed Ham

What do you make for Christmas dinner? Sometimes we'll do a prime rib or a roast turkey, but this year, I'm going all out with a Christmas ham that just looks festive. For this recipe, I made a cranberry-orange glaze with some warm winter spices that takes this ham to the next level. Oh and […]
