Mood Board: Sunroom Furniture (Inspired by The Biltmore)

May 3, 2024

We visited the Biltmore Estate in Asheville last month, and one of the first things that you see (that made me stop in my tracks) is the atrium. It's a grandiose space with curved wood beams and architectural elements overhead. It's lush with greenery and illuminated by the sun and rugged iron lanterns. It just showcased all the wonderful things that make this space a bridge between the outdoors and the home.

While our last house had a sunroom that we turned into a full-fledged dining room, I wanted to try my hand at designing a more traditional sunroom based on the inspiration from the Biltmore's atrium.

The Atrium at the Biltmore Estates

Here are some of the pieces that I would add to make it a great living space.

Laying The Foundation

To start off on our sunroom floor, I used our CLJ x Floorpops in Bonneville Beige, because they make such a statement (on a budget, too!) and are easy to install over tile or concrete. When it comes to seating, while the base furniture can be any style you like since it's protected from the elements, I do think it's important to use performance fabrics, which this beautiful blue sofa offers. The light fixture has a vintage vibe that's Biltmore-esque with its nod to botanical elements.

Furniture Staples

I envision this room as a serene space to relax, play games, read a book, and do a puzzle. I added in some extra seating in these caned chairs with lighter upholstery as a contrast to the sofa. There must be plants in a sunroom, and these side tables provide varying heights for greenery and a space for drinks. The wall fountain is stunning and would provide so much drama and soundscaping.

Sunroom Decor

I love investing in pieces that echo traditional elements in a modern way. This swan planter is a nod to the statue in the Biltmore atrium. A tidy faux ball topiary feels very English-inspired (without the maintenance), while the arched mirror has a beautiful antique gold leaf finish that feels like it could have been in the family for years.

Finishing Touches

For the wall, I framed this sketch that is reminiscent of the black & white print collection at the Biltmore in a textured woven frame. Finally I layered in some CLJ x Loloi pillows on the sofa that feature soothing, earthy colors to echo the outdoor environment.

Now you're equipped with sunroom design tips to elevate your space with Biltmore-inspired decor! Which room inspiration would you like to see next?

  1. We have a round four season porch with all windows. Would love to know if these materials would work being exposed to the elements all year round (or see a mood board that would!)

  2. Love this! Especially as we live in a historical home built less than 20 years after the Biltmore - I would love to see a kitchen inspired by the Biltmore as that is our current project!
Your kitchen, funny enough, has always struck me as having elements similar to the kitchens at the Biltmore!

  3. I just received my Style at Home magazine in the mail. One of the designers used your rug! I was so excited to see your name, as I have been following you for years. PS. I have one - love it!

Can You Paint an Electrical Meter Box? (Answer: Yes!)

We're finalizing the exterior hardscaping around the mudroom and one thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the meter box. It's that pale grey color and against the red brick, it was just too loud. So I decided to spray-paint it, and the payoff was immediate! There's really only one portion that you […]

Fall Boots (And My Hot Take on Skinny Jeans)

There are two types of boots I'm seeing everywhere this season that create two very different silhouettes for your favorite outfits. One is a very slender boot, often with a pointed toe. Because jeans are getting wider (hello to my new favorite pair), it's great to have a slim boot that you can zip up […]

Halloween Decor Ideas for a Traditional, Spooky Vibe

I tend to go for a traditional, elegant, and spooky approach to Halloween decor rather than a cutesy vibe. I want it to feel like my house is really abandoned!! Imagine if my home had been left untouched for 150 years...that's the look I'm going for. We're talking cobwebs, spiders, bats, ugly pumpkins with warts, […]
