Casual Friday

Casual Friday: May 11, 2018

May 11, 2018

• Last week, our family traveled to Southern California for a short, little getaway. We brought the girls to Disneyland, ate some amazing food, stopped by the beach and even swung by the new McGee & Co storefront in Costa Mesa since it was just minutes away from our hotel. (We stayed at the beautiful Avenue of the Arts hotel). And look who I ran into!

Shea and I have become good friends over the years (and even had her on the podcast twice!), so it was hard to believe that it was our first time meeting but she's just as delightful as you'd expect. And the store, the store is heaven. There are so many beautiful vignettes and moments in a small space and yet it doesn't feel crowded. They had this pennant hanging in the back of one of the shelves and it's perfect for the cabin, right?

• I've had a lot of questions about how my eyes are doing--thank you for your concern! For those of you who don't know, in February of this year I went in for Lasik eye surgery and they ended up doing PRK at the last minute. My experience and recovery were awful and unexpected. I wrote about it a month later, in March, right here. But now that were 3 months out, I thought I owed you another update on the healing process.

It took a solid 6 weeks for my vision to return to a state where I felt safe driving, or could even craft a blog post on my own. But it wasn't until very recently that I realized my vision has been more good than bad. I have noticed it still comes and goes occasionally (they said it could take 6 months) but for the most part I'm enjoying good vision 24 hours a day. My eyes are still dry, but not as bad as they were even a few weeks ago. I always carry drops with me and use them as needed. There are still times that I'll rub my eye a little too harsh and and it will send pain all the way to the back of my head! But! I'm so grateful I can see now. It's so nice to travel and not bring all my contacts and solution and glasses. My morning and nighttime routine feel so much easier, too.

• In yesterday's post, I had so many questions about the denim I was wearing. No, they weren't overalls--I was wearing these wide-legged cropped jeans! A new silhouette for me and I'm obsessed with the fit. They're so comfortable and I love the way they look with a simple tee tucked in. (they fit TTS). Bonus! They're 40% off right now right here with code SWEETTREAT!...as is everything else on that site!

• Speaking of tees, our Homebody ProperTee is now available in black per your request! And we also released two more designs this week!! Mug Life and Love Thy Neighborhood. We're currently looking at Vneck options and shipping internationally--And have a promising lead. :)

• Our bathroom renovation is due to wrap up in about 2 weeks and we'll likely be able to roll our clothes back into the closet area (we tore out all the hanging bars) sometime this weekend. And while I have been dreaming of what our closet could be for years--we have no concrete plans yet. Eek. It hit me last night--No one else is going to design that closet but me. Haha. I know I have to get on it! But, at the same time, my brain feels drained of decisions from the master bathroom. I feel like I need time to refresh, but will likely be pinning closets all weekend, while convincing Chris living off of rolling bars and plastic bins for another few weeks isn't so bad?

• Okay, this brass pendant has A LOT OF VERY expensive look-a-likes, but this one is only $149!

• Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I have been writing a post about motherhood and infertility and loss and all the emotions that I've experienced over the last 9 years that come with those things for a few weeks now. I'm not sure when I'll feel ready to hit publish on it (are you ever really ready?) but I have all the love for motherhood, at every stage, in every form, and my heart is with those that have the love and worry and heartache only a mother possesses this very special weekend.

  1. It is fun to see two designers that I admire together! It has been fun to follow your bathroom renovation. Also, I have a sister who has dealt with pregnancy loss, and I know there are so many that could benefit from hearing your story and your encouragement as a mother, so I hope you will hit publish! Best, Lucy

  2. I am just curious...were you struggling with near and far sightedness before? I can't even fathom your experience and I kind of wish you would go after them for doing that...with your platform you most certainly could make a difference (but I am sure you have better things to do but I just CAN'T BELIEVE how terrible that is!!)

I've been told I'm not a good candidate for lasik and i have a ton of contact issues with my multi vision contacts. I would love to do something permanent but I am just scared to death. Curious if you had bifocals or multi vision problems it actually corrected (despite the crazy recovery).

  3. I tried out a pair of wide leg jeans from Loft recently and love them! So cute with wide leather strap sandals. Also, so comfy!

  4. I just read your initial account of your PRK experience from Feb. I also have an eye surgery horror story, but about LASIK - I had it done 18 years ago, and was informed on the day of the surgery that one of my eye's corneas was too thin for the procedure. Instead, I decided to do LASIK on just one eye and to continue wearing a contact lens in the other eye (sounds like a pain in the butt, but my vision was -8 in one eye and -6 in the other, so I was basically legally blind without my contacts - to have good vision in even ONE eye without contacts was life-changing). Anyway, then proceeded with the LASIK in the "good" eye with the thicker cornea - and CUT OFF MY CORNEA completely in the surgery. Evidently the doctor screwed up and cut the flap too wide, and since my cornea was thin it detached completely. In the middle of the surgery I heard "uh-oh...nurse, hand me that cornea." TERRIFYING, especially since I was 21 years old at the time and totally alone. Evidently this is very rare, but I got lucky because they stuck the fake contact on overnight and my cornea fused back onto my eye. My vision has been great ever since (I wear a contact in the other eye), but I am left with a scar on my eye (I can't tell and only the eye dr can see it, but if my vision in that eye ever fails, I will be unable to wear a contact lens in it again without pain because of the scarring). I'll never forget the look on the nurses' faces when I came back the next day and took the eye patch off - it was like they were all expecting my eye to fall out of my body, they looked so scared. REALLY not a pleasant experience.
So yeah - that's my story.

  5. Happy Mother's Day! Just wanted to chime in that I'll be looking forward to your post on motherhood. I'm currently 5 years into the infertility battle and always love reading other's experiences... especially when they've ended with babies. :)

    1. Ashley, my thoughts are with you. We just celebrated my son’s first birthday after struggling to get (and stay) pregnant for a couple of years - so never lose hope and remember you aren’t alone (even though it can feel like it)! Good luck and hugs from across the internet!

    2. I am currently nursing my 3 week old after 4 years. The thing that i believe finally helped me was working with a Chinese medicine doctor. After 8 months of accupunture, herbs, and diet changes i got pregnant naturally. We were doing iui and got pregnant the month we toook a break. All the best to you

  6. Happy Mother's day to you! Doing a mini makeover at my house this weekend for my mother's day gift to myself and used your parents' makeover as a reference. Thanks! Happy Weekend!

  7. oh my gosh! it's is UNBELIEVABLE how grown up greta looks now!

also, so glad to hear your vision is getting better. it's weird to randomly think in a day "i wonder how julia's eyes are?" -about a person on the internet that i've never met. ha!

      1. I swear you have the worst luck with recommendations and prices changing LOL!

  8. Oh I've been dreaming about seeing the McGee & Co. shop- it looks beautiful! I'm pretty excited to see how your master bathroom turns out. I'm sure you're even more excited ;). Have a wonderful Mother's Day weekend!
