Santoku VS. Chef's Knife - Sort of Answering Which is "Better" + An Awesome Giveaway

April 30, 2014

Ok, so the title of this post is misleading. I'm not going to answer the question of "which knife is better," because there really isn't an answer. Even still, I'm asked this question quite often, so I felt like I should address it here.

I'll start off by saying, neither one is better than the other. Most professional chefs have both, and use them at different times. And when it comes down to it, they're both knives that cut stuff. So it's not so much what does one do that the other doesn't, but how is each designed to cut, and which would be most comfortable for you? Video time (pardon the dots on the video - time for a new camera methinks).

That's really all there is to it. At least in terms of what's important. Sure, we could go into the history of each knife design and blah blah blah, and while interesting to some of us, it really doesn't help you in your kitchen. But you know what will? Your choice of one of these beautiful knives.

Win the WÜSTHOF Precision Knife of Your Choice

The Wüsthof Precision line has both the quality you expect from Wüsthof, and a gorgeous design. 1. my chef's knife is my meat go too… but my santoku i used for just about everything else! nothing like a good set of knives.

    1. I'm such a cutlery nerd, but I can't help it. Having used pretty crappy knives in my past, I don't ever want to go back. A lot of people don't realize how much of a difference it makes, until I let them use mine. Then they can't stop thinking about it until they get their own. :)

  2. I love my Santoku knife! I choose it over my Chef's knife for almost everything except meat, just because I find it more comfortable for me. Great giveaway! Everyone needs a good knife in the kitchen!

My Storage Hack for Organizing Christmas Decorations

Every year when I pack up the decorations after Christmas, I collect all of the garlands together in one box, I get all the candlesticks together in another box, and all my nativity sets go into their own box. We label the boxes "garlands," "candles," "nativity sets,"...which seems great until you remember that you have […]

Cranberry-Glazed Ham

What do you make for Christmas dinner? Sometimes we'll do a prime rib or a roast turkey, but this year, I'm going all out with a Christmas ham that just looks festive. For this recipe, I made a cranberry-orange glaze with some warm winter spices that takes this ham to the next level. Oh and […]
