The Best Calendars for 2014

December 4, 2013

When we were growing up, every year for Christmas, my sisters and I always got a calendar for Christmas. We were a big calendaring family--which I guess you kind of have to be when you have 5 kids with 5 different activities going on. Every Sunday night we all had to break out our calendars and let my parents know what we had going on that week and "if its not on the calendar it isn't happening" were my mom's infamous words week after week.

I'm pretty sure most people use their phone or some online cloud, but I still like a planner or something physical. But calendars! I still love having one on the wall in view and every year they get better and better. Consider it another piece of art to grace your walls. Here are 11 of my favorites for 2014.

1. The Stendig Calendar is beyond huge and flew off the shelves last year and I assume it will do the same in 2014. $42.
2. Cats Let Nothing Darken Their Roar calendar is in its 9th edition. Only 1000 are made and they always sell out. The name of each month is hidden in new, witty phrases. Such a beautiful, fun conversation piece. $45.
3. Stitch The Stars Calendar Kit. So cool! Each month is screen printed with the corresponding constellation from the zodiac (eg. January is Capricorn). You can connect the dots using the embroidery thread and needle provided. Plus, with glow-in-the-dark ink and thread. $25.
4. Stunning Victorian-era "Language of Flowers" wall calendar by the talented House That Lars Built. Pop that in a frame already. $28.
5. This illustrated Travel America calendar from Rifle Paper Co. is charming and even after the year is over, I can see matting and framing the different pages. $26.
6. I was pleasantly surprised to see this One Canoe Two calendar was indeed, "XL" as it says. 20"x32" and comes with a cute wooden hanging rod. $69.
7. Michelle Armas's 2014 calendar features her Pop Rocks painting printed on archival paper. Signed! Next year, just cut off the calendar part, and you have a signed print. What a deal! $35.

8. 12 iconic chairs illustrated with maker and date to drool over all year. Sign me up. $18.

9. This "Dashing Facades" 2014 calendar features mini illustrations inspired by New York City buildings, including a few notable Manhattan facades such as the "Narrowest House in NYC" & the Decker Building. Great for your desk...even if it isn't in NYC. $16.
10. I have already seen this Snug Calendar gaining popularity. It comes in white and soft pink and is so graphically excellent. Purtttty. $21.
11. Lastly, how cool is this Wood Veneer Leaf Veins calendar? Very. $24.

  1. So many of those are beautiful, but you can't really write crap on them! So they're essentially just a way to see what day of the week a date falls on or something. :/. Because of that, I generally just end up getting a typical, cheap calendar with a picture on the top and big ol blocks with dates on the bottom (2013 has been the year of My Little Pony because why not?). I would love to see some options that are desk/cubicle friendly, with space to write a few things on each day. Any ideas?

    1. Thanks! I actually really like the makecollab vertical one (need to see the whole month), but it's WAY too big for my cube! sigh. The redstar one might do the trick. Or I could go with My Little Pony again :)

My Storage Hack for Organizing Christmas Decorations

Every year when I pack up the decorations after Christmas, I collect all of the garlands together in one box, I get all the candlesticks together in another box, and all my nativity sets go into their own box. We label the boxes "garlands," "candles," "nativity sets,"...which seems great until you remember that you have […]

Cranberry-Glazed Ham

What do you make for Christmas dinner? Sometimes we'll do a prime rib or a roast turkey, but this year, I'm going all out with a Christmas ham that just looks festive. For this recipe, I made a cranberry-orange glaze with some warm winter spices that takes this ham to the next level. Oh and […]
