Our backyard neighbor’s house is the most beautiful blue. One of the first times we met them, I told them how much I loved the color of their house and how it reminded me of the east coast, where I grew up. She laughed and said they went to medical school on the east coast and built the house inspired by the homes back east when they settled here. We love having it right next door, it feels like home.

For this month’s Ace Hardware project we were encouraged to break the rules when it comes to paint and really go out of our comfort zone. We’ve painted a ceiling a pretty turquoise, painted our base cabinets navy and in this home a pretty green-gray, did a fun 3/4 pink paint treatment on Greta’s walls, have no qualms about painting over wood (most recently our banister!) when it is needed–we’re not shy when it comes to bending traditional paint rules. But this month, we wanted to do something big! So we painted our house blue, too.

Just kidding! But we DID help my sister pick the new color for her house. And I bet you could guess what color we chose. :) Her house was a blah yellow in a sea of beige homes. That’s Idaho and Utah for you–a lot of beige and brown and gray homes.  She wanted hers to feel fresh and was totally on board with blue. I walked over to my neighbor’s with a few samples in hand and found an almost perfect match: Clark+Kensington’s Union Square.

While it might look like a dark gray indoors, outside, colors are a lot brighter and when you are covering something as large as a house (!!) paint colors will get a lot more vibrant, too. My sister picked the color up in exterior paint and hired painters for the job. It turned out so beautiful!

They are so happy with the new color and so are their neighbors. Much like on our street, it is like a breath of fresh air! Now, together with Ace, we’re giving away a $100 giftcard to get you started on a project of your own. Break some paint rules or just do something bold and unexpected with color! You can enter through the Rafflecopter form below and we’ll announce the winner right here on Monday. Take luck!

    Excellent task, cheers

  2. This blue is incredible! We’re about to finalize the selection on our own house and I went to check the paint chip at my local Ace and as you mentioned – it looks VERY dark gray. I’m now hesitating that it’s going to come out more gray than blue or that they changed the formula over the years. Any advice from your own experience? Thanks so much!!

  3. We provided siding for the neighbor’s house, and we are so excited to see it featured on your blog! They used the 7″ Perfection Shingle in the color #202 Oceanside. It turned out beautifully!

  4. That blue is beautiful! Down the street from us there is a large older home that sits on the top of a big hill. This how was class white with black shutters. That was until new owners moved in and have been renovating inside and out. They painted it this same shade of blue, and put a red roof on, with white trim and black shutters. It looks beautiful! Especially now with all the snow, it makes the home look even bigger. Great color, and thank you for hosting the giveaway. :)

  5. I currently live in SLC, but I went to school on the East Coast for a few years, and man, I sure do miss the architectural styles out there! Utah is definitely a beautiful state, but I miss the aesthetic of the East Coast, for sure.
