I've heard that when you're gift-giving, you should prioritize "something to wear, something to read, something they want, something they need..." I would like to add "something they'll USE" to this list. It's true that nearly all of our trusty tools could fall under something Chris and I have either wanted or needed. But I think gifting someone something they'll USE is a better category because sometimes we don't even know what we want/need until the perfect tool comes along. That's why I wanted to create a tool gift guide of my favorite devices and gadgets that any project-lover or putterer would love to receive under the tree.
Take my cordless screwdriver, for example—I carry this thing all over our house, tightening screws on loose table legs and doorknobs... hanging art. I use it so much that I either need a holster for it, or I need one for upstairs and one for downstairs :) A couple of years ago, I gifted this to my sister, whose house is covered in art. It's a gift she didn't even know she needed! I've rounded up 22 tool gift ideas below for everyone who loves to DIY. (Also, Lowe's is doing their Black Friday BUILDUP promo right now, so a bunch of these are on sale.)
Zircon Scan Depth Stud Finder $40 - But not just studs - pipes, gas lines, wires, all that stuff. Before drilling a hole or shooting a nail into your wall, you should have an idea of what's behind there.
Fiskars Steel Hand Pruner $14 - This is the best stocking stuffer for the gardener on your list. I use these babies to cut stems and branches from my yard to stock my vases seasonally.
Werner Fiberglass Step Ladder $99 - This is one of my favorite housewarming gifts! Give a step ladder to the person on your list with a new home. A step ladder is immediately helpful and constantly in use for installing light bulbs and organizing high-up storage spaces.
Digital Angle Finder $35 - Anyone on your gift list who has been pinning DIYs for crown moulding or trim work needs this.
DEWALT Corded Portable Table Saw $299 - This handy little saw moves around with you, so you don't have to take your wood pieces down to the garage or the driveway. It's so convenient when you're in the project groove.
Bosch 165-ft Laser Distance Measurer $89 - This one is like a magic trick. Your days of having one person hold one end of the tape measure are over. Point-and-shoot, and you can measure any distance digitally with a laser. A game-changer when measuring vertical distance.
10-in Plastic Contour Gauge $14 - This is how you can trace trim pieces or drywall around difficult shapes. It's such a nifty little tool.
Other Tool Gift Ideas (At Every Budget!)
Here are more tools that are handy for all sorts of home chores and projects, from yard work to woodworking.
I hope this tool gift guide is helpful for you to find something for that special person on your Christmas list. They'll be ready to kick off all their home or apartment projects in the new year!

Last year, we wanted to bring color to our very popular Chris Loves Julia x FloorPops peel-and-stick tile collection. We noticed that red & white marble checkerboard and green & white marble checkerboard were trending with luxury designers. I was even considering red & marble checkerboard in the mudroom at one point. Marble tiles are […]
I was so excited to share new photos of our entire house exterior a couple of months ago. But lately, the leaves are showing off their fall colors and the golden afternoon light has been a paid actor against the brick, ivy, and landscaping. There really was no other option: I had to take you […]
The product was gifted but all opinions are our own. About six months ago, we added a foot pedal to our kitchen sink. (GASP! I know!)) We kept it under wraps because we really wanted to test it out for a while to see if it was something we could recommend. It all started earlier […]
