The Tool Gift Guide for Homeowners & Renters

November 13, 2024

This post is sponsored by Lowe's Home Improvement

I've heard that when you're gift-giving, you should prioritize "something to wear, something to read, something they want, something they need..." I would like to add "something they'll USE" to this list. It's true that nearly all of our trusty tools could fall under something Chris and I have either wanted or needed. But I think gifting someone something they'll USE is a better category because sometimes we don't even know what we want/need until the perfect tool comes along. That's why I wanted to create a tool gift guide of my favorite devices and gadgets that any project-lover or putterer would love to receive under the tree.

Take my cordless screwdriver, for example—I carry this thing all over our house, tightening screws on loose table legs and doorknobs... hanging art. I use it so much that I either need a holster for it, or I need one for upstairs and one for downstairs :) A couple of years ago, I gifted this to my sister, whose house is covered in art. It's a gift she didn't even know she needed! I've rounded up 22 tool gift ideas below for everyone who loves to DIY. (Also, Lowe's is doing their Black Friday BUILDUP promo right now, so a bunch of these are on sale.)

My Tool Gift Guide with Something for Everyone

  1. DEWALT Flexdrive Cordless Screwdriver $89 - This compact screwdriver would be a great stocking stuffer for anyone on your list.
  2. Pit Boss Wood Pellet Grill with Smart Compatibility $699 - Grills are tools, right? :) Put a red bow on this, and your favorite cook will have this thing fired up on Christmas Day.
  3. Zircon Scan Depth Stud Finder $40 - But not just studs - pipes, gas lines, wires, all that stuff. Before drilling a hole or shooting a nail into your wall, you should have an idea of what's behind there.
  4. Fiskars Steel Hand Pruner $14 - This is the best stocking stuffer for the gardener on your list. I use these babies to cut stems and branches from my yard to stock my vases seasonally.
  5. Werner Fiberglass Step Ladder $99 - This is one of my favorite housewarming gifts! Give a step ladder to the person on your list with a new home. A step ladder is immediately helpful and constantly in use for installing light bulbs and organizing high-up storage spaces.
  6. Digital Angle Finder $35 - Anyone on your gift list who has been pinning DIYs for crown moulding or trim work needs this.
  7. Greenworks Electric Pressure Washer with 4 Spray Tips $249 - This one is actually too much fun :)
  8. DEWALT XTREME Cordless Screwdriver Set $129 - A small, but mighty, set that is a bestseller for a reason.
  9. CRAFTSMAN Cordless Straight Brad Nailer $99 - This is a great gift for crafters. I think you can build a birdhouse in 10 minutes flat with this thing :) We also use ours on just about everything from installing a ceiling medallion to putting up trim.
  10. DEWALT Corded Portable Table Saw $299 - This handy little saw moves around with you, so you don't have to take your wood pieces down to the garage or the driveway. It's so convenient when you're in the project groove.
  11. Bosch 165-ft Laser Distance Measurer $89 - This one is like a magic trick. Your days of having one person hold one end of the tape measure are over. Point-and-shoot, and you can measure any distance digitally with a laser. A game-changer when measuring vertical distance.
  12. 10-in Plastic Contour Gauge $14 - This is how you can trace trim pieces or drywall around difficult shapes. It's such a nifty little tool.

My Storage Hack for Organizing Christmas Decorations

Every year when I pack up the decorations after Christmas, I collect all of the garlands together in one box, I get all the candlesticks together in another box, and all my nativity sets go into their own box. We label the boxes "garlands," "candles," "nativity sets,"...which seems great until you remember that you have […]

Cranberry-Glazed Ham

What do you make for Christmas dinner? Sometimes we'll do a prime rib or a roast turkey, but this year, I'm going all out with a Christmas ham that just looks festive. For this recipe, I made a cranberry-orange glaze with some warm winter spices that takes this ham to the next level. Oh and […]
