7 Rug Hacks for Your Home

February 7, 2025

Want to transform your home with rugs but not sure where to start? From choosing the perfect rug pad to mastering the art of layering, we've got you covered. We're sharing seven clever rug hacks that will elevate your space, whether you're looking to add a touch of luxury, define a space, or simply keep your rugs looking their best. Get ready to discover game-changing tips and tricks, including our favorite rug grippers and a surprising use for outdoor rugs!

Psst...before we dive in, make sure you're getting the right rug size for your space. See my tips for choosing a rug size.

1. Get the Right Rug Pad for Your Rug

You can get an inexpensive, low-pile rug and make it seem like it's from the Grand Hotel if you have a plush rug pad underneath it. Find a rug pad with a good density so it has a sturdy feel underfoot and protects your floor. I like rug pads to be at least 1/4" thick. As far as sizing goes, it should be 1 inch smaller than your rug on all sides. But if it's too big, you can always cut the rug pad to fit! They are easy to cut even with scissors!

2. Rug Grippers Are Your Friend

We found these awesome rug pad grippers while testing different rug pads, and they're seriously amazing! Just stick one on each corner of your rug, and they suction right to the floor. No sticky residue to worry about, which is great. I love these especially for long runners in halls. Even our dog can run across them without them moving.

3. Need to Fill or Define the Space? Layer Rugs on Rugs (or Carpet)

Rosemarie Oatmeal/Lavender Rug

This is a great look if you have a smaller rug you love but want to put it in a larger space. It also gives off a very casual vibe to a space that you want to feel more inviting. This technique usually works best if the base rug is very short-pile or thin. Also, keep one rug in a more neutral pattern or color.

For instance, you can put down a thin, large jute rug and then layer on a vintage-style rug to add interest to the room. Or maybe you have wall-to-wall carpets. You can still make your bedroom or living room look more elevated and defined! A rug under some furniture can add so. much. drama. And coziness! It's incredible how much of a difference this makes!

P.S. You need this rug pad if layering a rug over wall-to-wall carpet.

4. Add a Runner to a Bathroom or Laundry Room or Stairwell!

We usually think hallways or kitchens are the place for rug runners, but you can also use them in laundry rooms or in place of bathroom mats in front of vanities. I've also used one as an entry rug when turned horizontally. It's usually best to avoid jute rugs in these circumstances, as you want something that can take/absorb a bit of moisture.

If you love a runner, you can also use it on a stairwell if the pattern allows! We connected and installed striped runners in our back hallway, and they completely changed the look.

5. Outdoor Rugs Are Also Great for Dining Rooms

When we launched our first indoor/outdoor rugs with Loloi, I wanted something that would be beautiful enough to be used in one of the most sophisticated rooms of the house. And it makes sense to choose a durable rug for dining room! You want something easy to clean (especially if you have kids or pets), and outdoor-friendly rugs can be perfect for indoor scenarios like this.

6. Refresh Your Rug

Want your rugs to look great and last a long time? Regular care is key! Vacuuming is a must, but sometimes your rug needs a deeper clean. Dry cleaning or, if the manufacturer says it's okay, steam cleaning can really freshen things up by getting rid of dirt, allergens, and dust mites. For wool, cotton, or polyester rugs, try sprinkling baking soda on them, letting it sit overnight, and then vacuuming it up. Another good tip? If your rug is in a busy area or gets a lot of sun, rotate it 180 degrees every six months or so. This will help it wear evenly and last longer.

As we mentioned above, indoor/outdoor rugs can usually take even more of a heavy cleaning—even hosing it off outside and allowing them to air dry is worth doing a couple times a year!

7. Spot Clean Like a Magician

Someone dropped something on one of our brand-new carpets the other day. I usually use Folex, but I had picked up some Resolve Professional Strength Spot and Stain Carpet Cleaner recently, so I gave it a try. I sprayed it and the stain just...disappeared. I didn’t even touch it or scrub or anything! Oh my gosh, I’m a believer. I do use Folex for upholstery, because it's tried-and-true for me there and I don't want to risk it.

It's always good to spot test before using a cleaner to make sure it's safe for your material. But I had to pass along my new find!

    1. I haven't experienced that! A quick search makes me think that it could be changing the pH of a material that doesn't respond well to that or needs to be fully rinsed. Try contacting a carpet/upholstery specialist? Hopefully a spot test and a different product will help you avoid that in the future!
