Casual Friday

Casual Friday: July 21, 2017

July 21, 2017

We finalized (and started--oops) so many big projects this week--my head is still spinning. Although I haven't posted here for the past two days, I hope you were able to catch some of the master bedroom renovation we did on Instagram Stories this week! It was an intense, but fun, 12 hour day that ended with the prettiest room and swollen ankles and we couldn't be happier to help give the amazing couple a new room. The project was sponsored by Ralph Lauren Home and All Modern donated so many pieces, too. We were able to hire a videographer to document the whole thing, if by chance you did miss it. A lot more photos and video coming of the project in the coming weeks, but here's a sneak peek of the after:

If you don't remember what the before looked like, you can check it out in this post. Can't wait to share with you the easy upgrade we pulled off!

More fun things this week!

• I was asked the funniest interview question this week: "If you could describe your home as a comfort food, which one would it be and why?" At first I was like, whaattttt?! But then I said, "Pot Roast. It's casual, classic and takes a long time to get right." I still can't stop thinking about that question though. What would you say?

• I did something crazy this week and ordered a postpartum girdle. This pregnancy has done a number on my back and abdomen and this one comes doctor recommended. Have you ever tried one?

• You can take an extra 30% off sale items at Madewell this weekend--most of which are already 50% off! The two things I couldn't recommend snatching up enough would be their Whisper Cotton V-neck pocket tee (my absolute favorite t-shirt of all time. Slouchy and forgiving)--so many colors and you can get them for $11 with the code THINKBIG. And I'm a huge fan of this cardigan and its big pockets, too.

• I finally sold our round metal coffee table this week that used to be in the living room and got a new one. Back in March, in this The Good, The Bad, Would We Do it Again post, we mentioned while the coffee table was sturdy the metal was pretty scratched and it kind of drove me bonkers. We have a photoshoot in our home coming up and replacing the coffee table has been on our list but I really struggled finding the one--especially since our couch is so wide and a coffee table should span about 2/3 the length. Nothing seemed substantial enough without a ginormous price tag. Then, Chris showed me this one from Crate and Barrel and we both fell for the live edge. It is so sturdy and the dimensions are spot on and the wood is warm and luxorious--no doubt, the missing piece the room needed.

• With our ever-growing traffic (thank you!) and the new site design a couple weeks ago, we've gotten a few messages from readers saying they were struggling with how long it took our site to load. Sometimes this can be a cacheing issue, but after we heard it so many times, we decided it was worth investing more time and money into. We ended up hiring a company (WPfaster.com for those interested) and over last weekend they were able to make our site more than twice as fast. They sent us a full report, and even actual timed footage of the before and after. We were really happy with the investment and hope that everything is working a lot better on your end, too.

Hope you all have a great weekend! We're working on wrapping up the girls' bathroom--all the tiling is in and I could faint, I love it so much.

Ps. The Nordstrom anniversary sale is now open to everyone and many of the budget home finds I found are still available! Run!

  1. The site looks great (loading much faster now!) and so does the master bedroom! Your friends are so lucky--you guys always do such great work. It would be awesome if you ever put together bedding coordinates (not the kind you get in a bag at Kohl's--maybe in partnership with Brooklinen or something) to take away the mystery for the rest of trying to figure out what shams would look good with which duvet cover, ha!

  2. I wore a girdle after my daughter was born and I loved it so much. I'm a pretty slim person, but my belly felt like it was wobbling around everywhere afterwards and the girdle made me feel so much more secure. (I'd also like to think it helped me to go back to my pre-pregnancy self faster.) Tip: You might hate it, but it's only for a little while. Mine started out INCREDIBLY tight and uncomfortable, but I knew it was time to say goodbye when it was loose even on the tightest set of hooks.

  3. The site is loading sooooo much faster now - thank you so much!!

Also, these casual Friday posts are great ????

  4. My sis used a postpartum girdle after her second baby and swears by it; she had to have a c-section and said the extra support was the only way she could stand up without wanting to cry. And I did notice the site is a lot faster - I thought it was because I switched browsers from Chrome to Opera!

    1. I like a medium for a more slouchy fit. If I didn't want to tuck part of it, I'd go with a small--still roomy. (I'm 6', normally a size 4)

  5. Yes about the girdle! I have two girls and the second I got the girdle. It's similar to the one you got but with clasp in the front. I wore it leaving the hospital and for about a month after delivery and I noticed a big difference of hip support and my uterus and everything shrinking back quicker than my first pregnancy! Hope it helps with you!!

  6. I bought a Belly Bandit to wear after my pregnancy, and then after an unexpected emergency c-section I was SO glad I had it. Wearing it was the only way I could stand, walk, or fully inhale for awhile. The support felt so great and wearing it shrunk me down SO FAST. Mine velcroed shut and I started using a pen to track my progress with how tightly I could close it. Super motivating to see that little mark move every day. You will love yours!

  7. Cute coffee table! The nurses had me wear a girdle after my c-section. I loved it for about 24 hours and then hated it passionately. I'm sure you'll figure out how you feel about it pretty easily. I liked at first that it made me feel more stable, but then it just felt constricting and hot and awful. I was told by the nurses that wearing it too long (like weeks/months) might impede my ability to heal- like it would do the work, and my body wouldn't learn to support itself properly again.

Take it easy! I hope your birth goes smoothly and that the transition to three girls is lovely.

  8. Julia, agreed, that coffee table is a looker. But I have to admit, I'm really waiting on an update on the lash serum. It's been three months, and the price has gone up pretty substantially. I really value your opinion, do you have one yet?

    All the best,
    Carrie

    1. I loved it for about three weeks and feel like my lashes did start looking immediately healthy and longer but then I don't know what happened, it really started irritating my eyes. I read some reviews from people saying to push past it and you would adjust, but I stopped using it.

      1. Thanks for the update. I have sensitive skin, and that is definitely one of my concerns. Appreciate it!

      2. I've stopped wearing all eye makeup because of sensitive eyes. I find wiping a little bit of castor oil on my lashes before bed is making them look beautiful and thick.

  9. Oh thank the good Lord your site is definitely working faster. I was not one of those who contacted you but it was so, so slow for me after your site redesign. I did 2 of the grilling recipes Chris posted earlier (they were so good!) and I resorted to looking them up on feedly and later through my saved note on Evernote because it took too long to pull up the post through your site. It's so much faster now, so thank you for making that investment!

    1. Agreed! I was one who mentioned the speed issue, and I noticed immediately after you had the work done!
