Cedar & Moss in the Reading Room

December 9, 2013

The last time we visited "project shelving," this is where we left off:

In a whirlwind weekend plus a few late nights, we built a wall to house some library lights for what we're calling the reading room. The whole thing involved lots of trips to the small attic to run the electrical, drywall, texturizing and more dust than we knew what to do with. You can read about that whole process here. Since then, and after a lot of vacuuming and washing walls, we actually just painted the whole room with a quick coat of paint (we still had a half of gallon left) to rid ourselves of dust once and for all. And then, we installed these beauties:
My hunt for the perfect library sconce was extensive. I wanted it to be something with a straight rod out since there wasn't much room between the ceiling and light pockets for a bent or angular fixture. We also decided even though a shorter, straight rod out was the way to go, a shade that could be redirected would be a nice bonus so that we could direct the light to our shelves as soon as we got those up. During my search, I ran across a startup lighting company, Cedar and Moss, that just launched in November. Michelle (designer, founder, artist, all-around-amazing) has a great collection of modern and mid-century lighting that was so completely on point with trends right now--at very competitive prices. There were, no less, than 4 fixtures that would have worked beautifully in the reading room (Tryon, Alto, Alder, any of the 4 Tilts!)
In the end, we zeroed in on the Tilt Cone in a modern black finish. It had everything we were looking for (straight rod, adjustable shade position, right dimensions):
Since Chris already had to light pockets wired, installation was a breeze--for him.
And now, the room that used to have zero lighting (and a flat wall):
Is now equipped with 3 sconces that we think look like they could have always been there, but amp up the room ten fold. They should have always been there!
Ignore all the extra furniture and general mess in here (we're in full-on prep shelves mode now) and enjoy a night shot. We have light! We still plan on adding a lamp or two in here, but to be able to flip a switch and see in this room at night is something we're doing for fun nowadays.
We hope to have thick wood shelves sanded, conditioned, stained, sealed and installed by the end of the week so these lights will have something to really shine down on. We're so excited to be a little closer to our end vision for this room. As expected, the lights are totally making it don't you think??
Special thanks to Cedar & Moss for partnering with us on this project. We are so thrilled for Michelle and her new lighting company adventure. Support her flourishing super small business and check out all of the amazing fixtures here
