All right, Jules is out for the rest of the week and I'm hijacking this blog. You're all mine for the next 4 days, so buckle up.
Little known fact about ol' Chris here, I worked as a bartender (no, I don't drink - it was a non-alcoholic bar and yes, I realize that doesn't make me a real bartender) for about 6 months in college. Jules actually hired me for that job long before we were married, or had even started dating. In that spirit, I decided to share some of my favorite summer drinks this week, starting with an old-time favorite of mine, the frozen hot chocolate. Yes, I realize it's not "hot" if it's frozen. It's not literal, yeesh.
My first experience with frozen hot chocolate was at Dairy Queen in Rexburg, Idaho, my Sr. year of high school. It was cheaper than a blizzard, and bigger to boot. Win win. It quickly became one of my favorite cool treats, and even though DQ doesn't have it on the menu any longer, we have a local restaurant here that does. And lucky me, I paid attention to how they made it last time I was there, and now I make my own. This recipe makes enough for two people:
* 3 cups ice
* 3/4 cups heavy cream
* 1 cup skim milk (if you use 1% or 2%, then use more milk and less cream)
* 2/3 cup Hershey syrup
• Whipped cream (I just use the canned stuff)
• Hershey chocolate bar
Put the ingredients with the *'s in a blender. Blend until super smooth. Pour into a cup, top with whipped cream and use a grater or microplane to shave some of the chocolate on top of the cream. Aaaaaaaand:
This is one of our favorite night-time drinks in the summer. Pop some popcorn, toss in a movie and knock back a couple of these bad boys and I think you'll find all is right in the world.

I just wanted to tell y'all I first made this recipe last summer, but I haven't made it since. I refused to make frozen hot chocolate unless it was this recipe! Lately, I have been really wanting to make it and today I spent a good 30 minutes googling SEVERAL different variations of "frozen hot chocolate" and I am so happy I finally found y'alls recipe again!

This was yummy, I didn't have hersheys only had homemade chocolate fudge sauce (I know bummer right? :)), the amount of cream seamed to coat my mouth, maybe I would add less cream and more milk (for my taste only)...? Unfortunately my health conscience hubs wouldn't share with me and I had to eat it all myself , well I did share an appropriate amount with my two year old.
Oh also we made the pina coladas too, super yummy!

Is a non-alcoholic bar a real thing or was that a joke? If it's real, then I think my brain just broke. Also, I'm super jealous of all the deliciousness that gets served in your house. My husband can cook eggs...on a good day.
Haha, believe it or not, yes, they're real. I grew up in an uber conservative, Mormon town. There was one bar, just outside of town, that went out of business because nobody ever went there, haha. Our "dry bar" was basically daiquiris, smoothies, shakes, sodas and a few random drinks.
I went to a really conservative Wesleyan college in the Midwest. No rated R movies, no dancing, no drinking. It was like Footloose before Kevin Bacon came to town. We would've loved such a hang out as you describe. We did have a coffee shop that had some delicious drinks, so I guess we weren't too deprived. But isn't caffeine off limits too in the Mormon tradition? I also feel weird saying/typing "Mormon." I feel like I heard somewhere that LDS was the preferred term. We don't have a very large Mormon population out here in the Midwest (at least not that I know of), so there's a lot I don't know.
Haha, wow that IS conservative. Mainly the "no dancing" thing. Other than that, you basically described my entire home town. :)
Caffeine isn't a problem, but coffee and tea (like black or green tea, not herbal tea) are taboo. Also, I don't mind being called Mormon. It's a nickname. LDS is an acronym. Either one is cool with me. The actual name is "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints," so it makes sense people would want to shorten it. :)

Good, I was afraid she was off sick or something. She will be tired when she gets home, from keeping up with girl's!
That will definitely be on my list for summer drinks! Have you ever been to Seredipity 3 in NYC? They have a version of frozen hot chocolate on their menu but you basically need to take out a 2nd mortgage on your house to pay for it - your version fits my wallet a whole lot more!
I've been to New York City one time, for about 2 hours (layover). I was traveling with a coworker who is the definition of a tourist, so he insisted we go to Times Square. It was crowded, and all the stores and restaurants seemed like they were chains. Kinda lame. I wanted to find a local dive, but he insisted on Chili's. Ugh. Not that I don't like Chili's, I actually do. But when you're in the culinary Mecca of the United States (NYC), you have a moral obligation to stay away from chain restaurants. Meh well, I'll make it out there again some day.

My boys would love this and I usually have homemade chocolate syrup in the fridge that I use to make hot chocolate. My husband would adore a mint version, must get on that....:-)
