Hardware a la Restoration

March 7, 2013
Aaaaannddd we have hardware!!  Can you believe it took us nearly two years to get to this point?  I will tell you it took absolutely no seconds at all to get used to opening our cabinets and drawers with handles.
The original plan was to get bin pulls for the drawers and knobs for the doors from Schoolhouse Electric--for a classic look.  But in the name of retail therapy on this day--I splurged just a bit on the Gilmore pulls for the drawers and the Grafton Metal pull for the doors; both from Restoration Hardware, both 4 inches.  I should say, they were on sale at the time, which helped me pull the proverbial plug without hesitation.
When they arrived, Chris was unaware I got both the bin pulls and the handles--he assumed I just got all handles--which, what?!, was never the plan. There was a lot of nervous laughter on my part, but luckily they look real sharp paired together--we both think so.
As for the finish, we decided on a satin nickel--which felt classic, but a little risky.  Sometimes I think satin nickel looks just like an incredibly matte version of nickel.  But from the photos online, I had great hopes that they would arrive shiny and very close in color to our stainless appliances and--hey, they did!
To install the hardware, we picked up an $11 hardware template (cheaper online!) from Home Depot, which in Chris's words is, "the best $11 spent!" Really, it made the job so quick. Maybe too quick, because in the speed of marking and drilling holes, Chris drilled holes for all the bin pulls too. ... ... Oh, um, those screw on from the front, hon. Eeks! So, Sunday night, we filled in all of the holes on every drawer, sanded and then repainted.
And then, this is kind of sad, when we finally started screwing in the bin pulls--all of the screws started breaking.  All of them.  Murphy's Law? Luckily, we were able to find really good matches to the screws that came with the bin pulls, Restoration Hardware totally got an email, and now that the hardware is on--we couldn't be happier. Note: we added bin pulls to the faux drawers under the sink--not functional, but they look pretty!
We had a little set back with our counters (more words on that once we have all the details of the solution), so we are tackling lighting in here next.  Which you may or MAY be able to tell from the photo above--this kitchen could use some attention in that department.
Ps. Anyone want to come and help paint our extremely cream-colored vaulted ceiling. woof.

  1. Certain things will follow, probably, I reached up and out of their lives in the today's world.
Like starving people stealing food, making vitamins like B-12 easier for you.
That's where I'm gonna hospice go to hell. When the transformation hospice reaches its finale.

  2. Did restoration hardware ever reply? We are installing right now and every screw is breaking!!!!

  3. I love the navy cabinets and the hardware is like jewelry!

Ya know... looking at the last picture of the kitchen... have you thought about painting the pantry door navy?

    1. WE haven't thought about it but a few other commenters have. You aren't alone. But, in my opinion, that would be TOO much navy and black and navy are a pretty classic pairing. I think/hope once the whole kitchen is done, you'll be able to see how it will tie in.

  4. It looks really great! I almost can't remember what it looked like before. Makes me want to re-paint my island a navy blue (I already have the RH pulls).

On another note, not sure if you have already mentioned this, but the "His" chair is available at World Market again in the gray color. Been crushing on it since I found your blog and almost bought the wheat color since it was 1/2 the price but didn't. I'm glad I waited.

  5. It's really coming along! I love your hardware choices because bin pulls are my fave but I also really like the handles you chose they are awesome! Can't wait to see the counters.....boo on your cream ceiling I hate painting ceilings!!

  6. Oooh love the new hardware! My boyfriend and I are in the process of buying a house, and I showed him pictures of my dream kitchens, which are bright with gleaming white cabinets. And he dropped a bombshell - he doesn't like painted wood!!! Because you can't "undo" it! So now I'm trying to wrap my head around keeping dark brown cabinets and how to work with that. Haha. So seeing your gorgeous kitchen is making me jealous! Well at least I have some wiggle room with the hardware!

  7. Gorgeous!! I love the satin nickel with the navy. V. polished. And handles with pulls looks so 'sleek meets modern chunky' in a good way in my book!

  8. Julia it looks amazing. Absolutely love. Amazing what a few changes can do. I'll bring my paint brush right over to help with the ceiling if you want to help with mine in the hallways :-). its funny I literally just had the same thought about our ceiling. It must be because everything else is nice and new and shiny.

Can't wait for your kitchen to come together.

  9. I keep thinking, there's no way she can top THIS update. But there you go again. Another amazing touch. Love how structure the handles are and even the faux pulls by the sink. Genius!

My favorite word on blogs, woof! Makes me think of Buzz's girlfriend on Home Alone when Kevin finds her picture in the trunk and goes, "Buzz's girlfriend....woof!!!" ---on a side note, I maybe do a once a week (sometimes twice) movie line reference of Home Alone and Ryan makes fun of me for it. Every time. He getting better at picking up my line and movie reference, but he still rolls his eyes when I go, Home Alone, duh (*winky face*)

K no more random thoughts from this girl.

  10. The hardware looks great! I ordered similar bin pulls for our kitchen, and have been trying to decide on handles for our cabinet doors. Love the ones you chose! Of course we won't be installing our hardware until after we replace the cabinet doors, so I'll be living vicariously through you.

  11. Love the hardware you picked, especially the finish. The kitchen is going to look AWESOME when the new counters are there. And I love that you're doing a waterfall edge, those are my favorite.
