Our New Leather Chairs & 25 Fall Decor Favorites!

September 16, 2019

As soon as we sold our last leather chairs with our previous home, we started the hunt for new ones. It wasn't until 6 weeks ago, that we ordered two of these lounge-y top-grain leather chairs for the living room and then, boom, demo started unexpectedly. They've been wrapped up and then we finally I thought hey, let's enjoy them in the office. But this weekend, with some time to myself and an itch in my fingertips--I started playing with layouts and finishes in the living room and before I knew it, I unrolled a too-small rug for the space, and plugged in a floor lamp and even hung a picture on the wall. It felt so good  to have a small corner of our home feel normal. And to see our things in a space that we haven't had the chance to really use yet. We're so anxious! We're so excited!

Area Rug, Leather Chair, Striped Pillow, Floor lamp, Olive Tree, Dining table, dining chairs, black vase (similar), dining pendant, arched china cabinet

Our home has always welcomed fall colors easily. I think it's just the type of decor I naturally gravitate toward and this home is no different. After my living room nesting, I clipped some branches from the yard, and lit my favorite fall candle and found the perfect white pumpkin at the grocery store. But for the most part, fall decor doesn't have to be literal.

Swap out your floral stems for something more leafy and fall colored. Scents will go a long way (even if it's still hot outside). Textiles bring Fall indoors more than anything--I linked a few great pillows (for a great price below along with a bunch of other budget-friendly decor pieces I gathered for the season!

  1. Hi there! I’ve been eyeing those beautiful leather chairs, but nervous about ordering without sitting in them first. Have you found them to be super comfortable?

    1. Janel, they're so comfortable that we keep moving them to different rooms in our house! They started in the girls' homework room, where we could hang out and help them. Then, they moved to our office. Now, they're in the living room. It's as if we don't want to sit on anything else!

  2. Can I just say thank you for posting a picture of a dusty lamp? I'm being serious. At times it can be so discouraging trying to keep up a home with work and kids and life, and this picture feels very real to me. While I love and appreciate beautifully curated aspirational photos and posts, real ones like this mean so much more. It's attainable, it's real life, and I'm grateful for that.

    1. I thought exactly the same thing!! 'Oh they're human! I have dust in my house too! I don't have to be perfect all the time!'
Love everything you do as always, but maybe liked this photo the most for that exact reason, haha! :)

  3. I love this vignette! It says cozy without screaming FALL. One thing I've been wondering is how you are finding it to decorate for a house with a much larger scale (i.e., size of the rooms, height of the ceiling)? I came from a small ranch house with 8 ft. ceilings and now have a 5k sq ft house where the scale is oversize on the everything. I struggle with filling the space appropriately and finding affordable furniture that fits well. Most furniture is not scaled for the size of the rooms but I don't like the look of oversize everything. Thanks as always for your continued engagement with your readers. It's so fun to see you tackling a new space and hearing your thoughts!

  4. I love everything you do! I wish so much you could just come to my house and do everything ! :) I'm curious about the striped throw pillow. I looked it up, and I can't tell if its a grayish blue, or if it's charcoal?

  5. I love everything you're putting together in this house Julia and Chris! Out of curiosity (if anyone else wants to chime in) do most people in the US change their styling/decor with the change of season? Or is it mainly bloggers/stylists? It's not really something people do in Australia (other than the christmas tree of course!). Would love to hear from other countries if it's a thing there :)

    1. As an Aussie who has lived in the UK for eight years I now do this too! It was a surprise to me at first, as I was like you Libby, and kept everything as is in Australia.
Now I hang velvet curtains for AW, swap out my light, bright duvet/doona cover for a thicker winter one with a darker pattern and change the candle scents. It is so much fun!

  6. You've got the Midas touch!!!! Everything you style is golden!! Would you please share/source where the chairs around the table are from?

  7. I have a round table and am VERY HOPEFUL you will do a ROUND dining table style post. I find it hard to know HOW to decorate it. I usually just have something in the middle. I watch your posts and see you do the same. BUT if I wanted to dress it up with more I don't know if I do two runners one each direction or a full tablecloth or what. I would love to see you style your table a few ways in a future post.

  8. This looks greats! I love how things flow so well in your house from one room to the next. You have this knack of picking individual things that I normally wouldn't choose for myself, but when you put them all together it's magic!

  9. Hi Julia, thanks for all your great content! I’ve been a long time follower. I noticed when you posted the weather forecast on Instagram over the weekend the humidity levels were really low. I live in Reno where it’s also super dry.

Curious if you’d be willing to share tips on how you keep the proper humidity levels up in your house to preserve your furniture?

Humidifiers are kind of ugly and hard to hide but have them in the effective spots. I know this is probably a western US problem only but it would be great to hear how you tackle this.

      1. :) I just caved and finally got one a couple days ago because our indoor humidity is in the mid 20% range most of the fall and winter. Apparently it should be between 35 and 55% for wood floors and wood furniture? Still learning all this since I came from living near the coast :)

    1. We are in Colorado and have a whole house humidifier on our furnace. Defiantly worth it for those of us in arid climates!

  10. I’ve been on the hunt for leather chairs are cool and structural, don’t look heavy, and yet would be super comfortable to sit and watch a movie in if you happened to end up there during family movie night. These tick the first two boxes for sure - what’s your review on the third? Comfy enough for a two hour movie without complaints? Would love to hear your thoughts!

      1. Thank you for such a quick reply! So many bloggers don’t reply ever......I am impressed by your graciousness and kindness in answering so many questions as I am sure you are extremely busy. Well done!

  11. I remember when I first got married, we were staying in a temporary apartment for six weeks until we moved 13 hours away. Everything we owned was in boxes, except the essentials. I called my mom crying about how awful everything was and how homesick I was. She came over with a $40.00 cheap area rug, and a mission. It took two hours but our living room had a piece of art on the wall, a rug, a lamp, and throw blankets, and all of a sudden it felt like home.

  12. You’d mentioned purchasing a fruiting olive tree a while back. Is that tree the greenery peeking in the right hand side of the photo?

    1. That's a faux Olive tree. I bought a real one but then I shared it before it shipped and mine got cancelled because they oversold. I never learn ????

  13. I’m so happy you kept that rug! I have it in my living room, too. I’m jealous of your fall decor... it’s still in the eighties here, so I just can’t get into fall-mode yet. Sigh. I’m SO ready— saving these ideas for a few weeks from now! :)
