"[Greta], you've totally transitioned"

August 20, 2012

Name that movie!

This weekend, our biggest project didn't involve a single paint brush or power tool. You may remember,  last November, sanity trumped aesthetics and we got a crib tent for Greta-girl. To this day, we stand by that decision.  It saved us all.  And for the past almost year, we have all been sleeping giants.

This weekend, Greta finally outgrew her crib tent and it had to come off.  At first we thought, by some miracle, she had forgotten how to climb out of her crib--which was the reason for the tent in the first place, but ahh, no such luck.  Which only left us with one option--err,  I guess broken bones could be a second option.  But, we decided to convert her crib into a toddler bed.  This picture sums up how she feels about the whole thing:

Ecstatic.  There were so many moments this weekend where we would find Greta hanging out on her "new" bed.  We put a child lock on the doorknob inside of her room, so she can't escape during the night, and that does restore some peace of mind.  The sleeping transition otherwise? It's getting better.  We have had to go in and turn off her light multiple times the first night, but as each day passes, she must be realizing that her room, although significantly more fun due to the fact that she can move freely, is still not that fun.  We have never really kept any toys in her bedroom, besides her corner swing, to distract her from sleeping, so besides the animal friends in her bed--which are abundant--there really isn't much to get out of bed. At least that is what we keep telling her.

Nap time is still a different story.  A story I am almost too tired to tell--but we are holding onto those precious two hours for as long as we can.  (I can hear her running around her room right now.  Sigh.)

In the coming months, as soon as we get the hang of sleeping unconfined down, and get Greta a new twin-sized bed--we are anxious to give her a big-girl room, too.  We've even talked about adding a little canopy over her bed when the time comes, since she loved sleeping in her tent so much.

Anyone else transitioning their tot from crib to bed??  Feel free to share your own story or any tips on what has worked for you.

Psst.  A new living room addition just arrived in the mail!  Can't wait to share that with you tomorrow. :)

  1. You are MUCH braver than I am!!!!

I am stilllllllllll trying to hold off as long as we can. We ARE getting a twin bed within the next couple weeks, but that is mainly for Ryan to sleep in while I toss and turn all night. It is driving him mad sleeping in the same bed as me. Brinley still needs her naps and I am SO afraid that if we switch her now, she will stop napping completely. Which I am probably just being dramatic about because she didn't stop napping when the binky was thrown away....so who knows. The babe will be in the pack in play for awhile anyways, so I'm guessing we have until january to make the leap. Eeeeks. It gives me anxiety just thinking about it!!

  2. That pic of your daughter sitting up in her bed is too cute!
My son is 22 months and we are expecting a new baby in 20 weeks. :) My son is still in his crib but I am trying to plan out a way to get him fully transitioned to a big-boy-bed before the new baby arrives so we can re-use his crib. I don't know if I should attempt to convert his crib to a toddler bed and then move him to a real bed or just skip the toddler bed all together. Eitehr way, I foresee a few sleepness nights trying to get him to stay put! :)

  3. You are half way to "normal" again. It didn't take Koley more than 2 weeks. Well... maybe 3 weeks to totally get used to his freedom (of his room and over his light switch). Now, it's straight to bed to problems, whining, hassle, or running around. And Greta has always been better at that kind of thing.

  4. sweet :) with both of my kids we put up a babygate on their door when they outgrew their crib. It taught them boundaries, and that the room was for sleeping. it saved my sanity..worth a try! (ps they both still napped after outgrowing cribs, i bet she will adjust!)

  5. Our transition this weekend was going from a "childproof" doorknob cover to an actual lock on our 2 year old's door. He's been in his toddler bed since he was 18 months old and does great! But now he's figured out how to break off the doorknob cover and how to remove the gate we put out side his door. So, we switched doorknobs, and now his locks from the outside.

My only advice about moving to the toddler bed, is always have your camera when you go check on Greta. Our BEST pictures are of our little one in the weirdest positions, on the floor, half on half off, etc.
