Inspiration

Pinterest Hits and Misses

April 20, 2012
Sometimes I think that Pinterest was created just for me and for those just like me.  I used to have files and files of links and photos, labeled the best I could.  Note: labeling by date is the worst idea ever.  I utilize Pinterest on the daily--not only to store my inspirations, recipes, and also to organize some of my mood boards I am working on, but I am also constantly trying the things I pin.  Multiple times a week, I am referring to my pins and trying things out.   Rarely do we hear how things actually turn out.  Here are just 3 of our most recent hits and misses we found on Pinterest.
1.  The Miss. Garlic Parmesan Edamame using this recipe.  Chris, Greta and I love, love, LOVE edamame--but this was not good.  It was so rich and messy!  Edamame is a finger food, and to handle each pod covered in garlic, parmesan and oil was just as unenjoyable as the overpowering garlic flavor masking the flavor of the soy bean.  Do yourself a favor and skip this one and stick to sprinkling edamame with sea salt.

2.  The In-Betweener.  One Sunday morning, Chris and I set out to get our faces glowing with homemade pore strips using this recipe and tutorial.  The verdict:  It smelled ba-ad.  Like cheese puffs.  Which don't necessarily smell bad if they are cheese puffs, but we don't really like our cleansers--or faces--smelling like that.  After setting for about fifteen minutes on our faces, we peeled it off.  I can't say our pores were completely clear, but our faces were baby soft.  It was cheap and funny, made funnier because we couldn't move our faces to laugh with the hard shell spread over our cheeks. Worth a try.

3.  The It-Really-Works!  You may have seen pictures of green onion stubs in water floating around Pinterest.  Since we buy green onions almost every week, I thought I'd give a go at regrowing the ones we already sliced down.  By the next week, the green part had grown above the glass rim again ready to re-use.  My only mistake, make sure you tell everyone in the house why there are green onions in water on your windowsill for a week, or they might throw them out.  ...meh.  You'll have to take my word on this one--green onion stubs in water really do grow back.

What have you been trying on Pinterest lately.  Hits and misses?  We should all be informing/warning each other, right?

P.S.  You can follow us on Pinterest here!  Happy, happy weekend.  Hallelujah, it's here.

  1. I made a photo collage in the shape of a 50 for my mom's birthday this week. The cardboard I glued all the pictured to started to bend a little bit toward the end of the day, so next time I'll add additional support to the back, but it was still a huge hit. My mom loved it. I'm considering making one for my daughter's birthday every year and displaying all of them at each birthday.

  2. I love this post! So true that experiments from pinterest can have wildly varying levels of success :) I had the most awesome success recently with a bread recipe from pinterest though - from this blog: http://simplysogood.blogspot.com/2010/03/crusty-bread.html it's amazing!! I'm a grad student with foster kittens and have zero time, but I've made about 7 loaves of this in different flavours and they all look like a professional baker made them, our friends rave over them :D (disclaimer: you have to have a dutch oven or a le cruset? to make them. I have a $34 dutch oven from walmart for camping :) )

  3. I did wonder if the green onions would work, glad they do! I tried that tip on using salt to get the sticky gunk off your iron, guess what? Fail. Didn't do a thing but get salt all over, oh well.

  4. Yesterday I tried a cute hair idea... twist your hair and then run it through your flat iron... EPIC FAIL! I tried to get it to work out and messed with it unitl the very last minute before I had to leave... I was expecting fun, loose waves... I got friz! It was a bad hair day for me! From now on, I'll try stuff like that on the weekends only!

  5. I just put some green onions in a glass of water yesterday at the time doubting it would work.... glad to see you're getting some success!!

  6. I've tried a few of the sewing projects that I've put on my to-do pin board, and they're all successes. Easy, but very nice.

  7. Hahahahahahaha that picture of you two!!!! Lol Chris' face!!!!!!

I do miss pinterest, but I spent so much time on there, it is refreshing to have one less networking thing going on. I had sooooo many recipes though, tear!

  8. Love the onion tip! I'm definitely doing that with this week's bunch. Have you seen the tip rolling around pinterest about freezing green onions? (http://pinterest.com/pin/92042386104583033/) Just slice 'em up and freeze them in an empty water bottle or some such. Then sprinkle a few out when you need them. I haven't tried it, but it seem pretty genius. Although my genius detecting ability is about 50/50 on pinterest. So much brilliance; so many busts.

  9. I made bacon/jalepeno puffs last Saturday for a party and they were a hit! I've also gotten more than a few dog treat recipes that Molly seems to love. Tomorrow, I'll be trying a mini cinnamin bun recipe for a work breakfast on Wednesday.

So far Pinterest has been more of a "maybe someday" application for me... but I'm getting there!
