Meet ol' Master Bath

May 31, 2011

We are already dreaming of what we would love to change about the bathroom and the list is never-ending.  Frost the window and get rid of those cheap, old, dirty blinds.  Replace the floors.  Replace the vanity with something less big.  Frame the mirror.  Change out the door.  Install some shelving.  Paint over all the stenciling. Get rid of the bath tub.  ....yeah, we're pretty sure.

Getting rid of the huge bathtub that seemed so dreamy at first is definitely a topic of discussion over here.    I wouldn't call myself a bath person.  I did try to take a bath once since we moved in and the water ended up not being hot enough and I didn't want to waste more water by filling it up again, so I sat in luke warm water for 10 minutes and then took a steamy shower.   A hot shower is something that is definitely on my favorite-things list...so why not amp up our shower??

The tub also takes up a lot of visual space and this bathroom isn't huge.  I think getting rid of the tub and installing glass doors for the shower would make this room visually larger.  The only reason we're hesitating is for resale purposes--because we probably won't live here forever.  Do people look for a big tub in the master bathroom or would they be equally as happy with a nice shower like these I pinned and can't stop thinking about?:

So, what say ye?
"Keep the tub for resale purposes."
OR
"I would much rather have a big shower with all the upgrades."
...or maybe something completely different.  We'd love to hear.

  1. With havin so much written content do you ever run into any propblems of
plagorism or copyright violation? My site has a lot of completely unique content I've either
authored myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet
without my authorization. Do you know any methods to help reduce content from being ripped off?
    I'd truly appreciate it.

  2. Im torn between the two... I love a good jetted bath every now and then, but I love a nice hot shower too... in fact, mine isnt working right now and I cant use my own master bath shower I have to go down the hall, so I would love my own shower right now! :O)

  3. Keep the tub. I'm a 32 yo sahm and I have two major requests for our next house. A double oven and TWO garden tubs. One for me and one for the children. Kids close in age take baths together and I hate bathing them in standard size tubs. I also love baths and don't want to share my own bath with them. Hubby doesn't like baths, butbut it is a deal breaker for me.

  5. Well there you go then! Def do the shower in the master bathroom. I love the look with the half glass instead of a shower curtain. Can't wait to see what you do witht he space.

  6. Oh gosh, that is so hard. I'd say, as long as there's a tub somewhere in the house, then maybe you could get away with doing just a shower in the master bathroom. My mom's master bathroom had only a shower, so when she wanted a bath, she would come use the kids' tub, and it worked out just fine.

  7. okay- I've been thinking.

What about a shower with a good bench along one of the walls? I think that would be appealing if older people wanted to buy your home later on. I don't know. I was just thinking...

  8. Ken's mom has a huge old shower in her master bath. It's got the showers heads all up and down the wall. I mean all up and down ALL the walls. It's incredible. Love it. I feel like younger people would go for the high falooting shower and maybe some of the old fogies would like the tub. But that's just speculation.

  9. Well, having been in real estate for almost 20 years, I can tell you that it's easier to sell the tub. Especially in this area (being the 'conservatives' we so often are). But I'm with your other readers - if you have a tub somewhere else in the house, selling a master shower with the upgrades won't be difficult. It often depends on your buyer...younger, older, etc. Most importantly, though, the bottom line should be what YOU want. You just moved in and sure, you probably won't stay there forever, but worrying about resale on such a relatively small point should come second to "Holy Cow! I just HAVE to take shower in THAT!" Let the next buyer worry about what they want (just like you're doing now). But...that's just my 2 cents. ;) Love you.

  10. Leslie-

We do have another tub in the bathroom hall that we refer to as "Greta's bathroom" right now. It's perfect for giving her baths so we wouldn't dream of ripping that out, too. We'll see where we end up.

  11. I am a tub person, but those showers look pretty inviting too. Do you have another tub in the house though? BC I would totally buy a house as long as it had at least one tub, mainly for bathing kids. Whatever you decide I am sure it will look amazing.

  13. Shower for reals!!!! Ryan is the bath man. We MUST have a garden style tub or no go for the homes we will look at. He would bathe everyday if I let him. Ahem...no, lets not waste anymore water Mister Briggs!!!
