Casual Friday: What movies/shows do you watch for the interiors? (Here are my favorites!)

August 20, 2021

(Pride & Prejudice interior via)

What are your favorite on-screen interiors?? You know, the shows/movies that are good, but then the set design makes them even better?! Or maybe you watch exclusively for the set design? Lately, I've been so inspired by movies and shows--these are masters at creating mood and ambience with interiors. It's more than beautiful, it tells a story. Right now, I'm feeling especially inspired by:

Emma (2020)
Knives Out
Little Women (2019) but both really
A Little Princess (1995)
Downton Abbey (forever!)
Queen's Gambit
Bridgerton
Pride & Prejudice (2005)

Really striking traditional interiors! So much eye candy. I excited for our home to tell its own story over the next months and years, but I would be lying if I didn't say I wish I could hurry it along. These things take so much time and energy and MONEY and I know I'll appreciate it even more for the time it takes. In the meantime, tell me your favorite thing to watch for the eye candy interiors--it's movie night here!

Other fun things this week!

  1. The interior of Hannah and Her Sisters is interesting because it's Mia Farrow's real apartment & furnishings. Eclectic and relaxed in style. Not sophisticated, but sometimes maybe that's better? Icy perfection in design can produce compliments, but leave visitors uncomfortable at times. And a house done completely in neutrals can feel cold or bland. I remember the delight I took as a child in my bedroom wall color, which was a soft green with a touch of blue. It would be a shame to grow up without examples of exuberant color.

  2. I also love Sex Education on Netflix for this very reason! The interiors and fashion in that show are so fun!! It is also just such a fun and hilarious show.

  3. You have named so many great ones and the comments are full of others as well! I will concur with everyone who said You've Got Mail, The Family Stone, and Father of the Bride (1991). And Outlander, specially the home built in the new seasons. They made ambient room videos for YouTube of the fireplace, kitchen, and Clare's surgery. They are fantastic! I LOVE the interiors of Little Women (1994) and the series Victoria, specifically the Christmas episode at the end of season 2 called Comfort and Joy. It has the great over-the-top, more is more feel of a Victorian Christmas. I also have always loved Fried Green Tomatoes for the interiors (and exterior) of the Whistle Stop Café. I am partial to any movie or show where the architecture is basically another character and feel pain when something happens to it such as the Bond family home in Skyfall. :) I also watch basically any Nicholas Sparks movie for the architecture and interiors!

  4. Parenthood (the TV show). After I watched I looked up all the set designs online. First and only time I’ve ever cared enough to do that!

  5. The Upside - the colors, furnishings, and all the amazing artwork is inspiring.
It’s Complicated - so warm and inviting.

  6. Love everyone’s contributions! I don’t think I saw this one here: You, Me & Dupree. Silly movie but a gorgeous Craftsman bungalow. Bought the DVD and painstakingly sketched out the floor plan 😂 Why? No idea, I was 24 and not about to build a house!

  7. The Bookshop (2017)
Starring Emily Mortimer and Bill Nighy. Just gorgeous and atmospheric! Think I’ll rewatch it this weekend 🪴

  8. The Aftermath (not a very good movie but amazing set design)
In the Bedroom (gorgeous New England farmhouse)
    Persuasion (the Amanda Root version)
Unfaithful (their New York farmhouse and his amazing loft in NYC!!!)

  9. Home Again, another Nancy Meyers movie starring Reese Witherspoon. I love Spanish/Mexican/hacienda revival homes, and the one featured in this movie has wonderful outdoor spaces and splashes of pink everywhere!

  10. P&P (1996 BBC version)
    Emma (2009 BBC version)
    Father of the Bride
Pollyanna - the kitchen is awesome
    Parent Trap (the old one)
You’ve Got Mail - every single house/shop set in this show has a different vibe and I love them all, but of course her apartment, with its mix of florals and geometric takes the cake for me
Follow Me, Boys (love the living and dining room, and the shop)
    Downton Abbey - of course!

  11. Sense and Sensibility will always be an interiors favorite. Barton Cottage especially is so so good. Little Women (the 1995 version) is divine. I also love The Holiday, Gran Hotel, Outlander, and Anne of Green Gables

  12. Ooo, A Single Man! The house is amazing (mid century modern) and it’s the best film ever. Completely different style to your house though.

  13. Parenthood was a great series for checking out set design! Each character/family had a unique style that was so fun to see!

  14. It’s Complicated. I watch it over and over again. I love everything about her home, interior and exterior, and her bakery. Love how timeless and lived in it feels.

  15. All the Janes: the Colin Firth P&P (Pemberley!), Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, and the forty-eleven Emmas. A Single Man, The Devil Wears Prada, Enchanted April, anything filmed in England.

And on tv: The Crown, The Avengers, Cranford, and all stylish murder mysteries, preferably set in a Georgian country house with extensive grounds.

These days, I can recognize a room used from one movie to the next or exterior shots taken at the same house in different films. And don’t even get me started on shared costumes! Too much fun.

  16. I’ve been obsessed for years with the interior of a movie called Indiscreet with Ingrid Bergman and Carry Grant. She has a London flat with the most amazing gallery wall with velvet sofas and pillows. It’s jaw dropping amazing eclectic interior design! I’m also obsessed with the design in North by Northwest. Old movie interiors are where it’s at! There should be an in Instagram devoted to the interior design of old movies and how it influences design today.

  17. Something’s Gotta Give, Grace and Frankie , all the homes but especially the beach one! Didn’t realize I was such a coastal vibe person!

  18. The Dragonfly Inn from Gilmore Girls is soooooo good 😍 especially the library! Been crushing so hard on it!

  19. The movie The Dig (found on Netflix) has some really lovely interiors. Although much of the movie is set outdoors, many of the details in the interior shots really caught my eye.

  20. This whole list is ✨ but I absolutely have to add Practical Magic. That house is forever my dream house. My forever kitchen inspo 😍 the tile, the island, the stove! I could go on forever.

  21. Age of Adeline’s apartment. Also it’s a cartoon my kids used to watch but Willa’s wild Life - it’s all MCM and would love it all.

  22. Have you seen the film version of Great Expectations with Ethan Hawke and Gwenyth Paltrow? The entire set is all designed in shades of green.
    💚💚💚

  23. Definitely not the fanciest, but I loved Zeek and Camille's house in the show Parenthood. Their kitchen was my favorite! So homie and welcoming.

  24. I have always LOVED the beach house in the movie Something's Gotta Give! It is a 90s movie but just looked it up again and it is seriously so CLASSIC!

  25. Just about every Nancy Meyers movie ever made, especially Something's Gotta Give. And It's Complicated. I do love Emma for the eye candy clothes.

  26. I love Bilbo Baggins home on Lord of the Rings. Curvy lines, warm colors, rich wood. Reeks of character.
