Painting of the Week | 06 Swept Away

February 21, 2014

Despite the dusty conditions surrounding me, I managed to lock myself in a room (keep Greta busy) and painted until I was swept away to another place. I almost took a break this week, because things are so crazy right now, but I am glad I pushed forward and went through with this painting--and a little color exercise.

Painting of the Week | 06 Swept Away

I usually enjoy working with a basic palette of a handful of colors--sometimes only the primary ones--but this week, I made a conscious decision to only use three tubes of paint I don't normally reach for (cerulean blue, permanent green deep and mudstone--a neutral tan) along with a white and black to tint. Using just three colors really helped me keep the painting tight, while allowing me to have fun mixing and discovering new hues--a pretty olive, mint, warm navy, slate blue, so many more (just look!)  that make me want to use these barely-used-tubes again and again. And because all of the colors were created using the same tubes of paint, they all coordinate naturally. And that's my idea of a good time. #artnerd

As a reminder, I will be producing one painting a week and presenting that painting here on Fridays. It will also be available for purchase in my Etsy shop. If you miss snagging the original, high quality giclee prints are available in a variety of sizes.

  1. i've been having problems lately getting your blog to show up in my newsreader....nothing new has shown up for at least a few weeks. Anyone else having an issue?

      1. Feedly... the other blogs I follow don't seem to be having any issues and it worked fine previously. Not sure what the problem could be! Thanks!

  2. Love all your paintings, but what strikes me most in this photo is that I'm pretty sure I have the same art history book as you do on the bottom shelf!
