Is the Inside of Your Front Door Painted?

July 7, 2014

Last week, on a whim, I painted the inside of our front door a shiny black. I actually used the same gloss paint I got for the bench, but in this lighting it definitely reads black--which I love.

I can't believe the difference! It made our old beat up door look new and expensive. I was kind of worried about doing such a dark color in a space where there so much light pouring in, but none reflecting on this surface, making it look kind of darker--but the dark door actually provided a stark contrast that made everything around it appear brighter.

Is the inside of your front door painted? I've seen some beautiful examples of colorful ones (this is a favorite!) as well as classic black. I'm so glad I took the plunge. If you do opt to paint the inside of yours a darker shade, like black, I'd highly recommend going glossy too--so dramatic!

  1. I just painted the inside of my front door high gloss black. I LOVE it! The out side of the door is a light jamaican sea blue. The floors in the foyer are irregular-shaped grey slate tile. I have a whimsical cactus wallpaper on the lower wall and a blue/green grey on the upper wall. The door really pops and I can't help myself but to stare at it every time I walk by.

For our entrance from the garage (the most used entrance) I painted the whole door, inside and out, red. Walls are very light grey and it opens into a kitchen that is royal blue and white so that is the only pop of red and again, I really really like it.

Just say NO NO NO to boring white door interiors. Go bold or go home. Red. Black. Blue. Whatever! The thing is, its a door and it literally doesn't have to "match" the rest of the interior because we see it as separate so you can do what you want. (I mean, it shouldn't clash.)

  2. I came back to this post because I have wanted to paint the inside black for a while now. I'm not scared of the color, I'm scared of messing it up and cheapening the look because of my errors. I'm terrified of brush strokes on this. I really want to paint the outside a teal or turquoise also. I'm such a perfectionist that it prevents me from taking a chance sometimes.

  3. Yes :) Our house is a pale green with dark green shutters. Our front door was also dark green but I just didn't like it. It didn't feel happy. Now it is SW Anjou Pear and is just perfect! It is a deep almost mustard yellow that looks awesome with the creamy green siding. We painted the inside of the door and it added so much to the foyer. We just love it!

Afterwards I started noticing in everyone elses house that the backside of the front door was always white or brown. So boring.

  4. I would paint the inside of my door but haven't gotten around to it yet. It's interesting that you say the black color makes the rest of the white seem even brighter (though it makes sense). Just never thought of it that way!

  5. This is awesome!! Gives me motivation to paint the inside of ours. We have the brightest door on the block with a robin's egg blue, and my husband wasn't too excited to paint the inside, but I think I'll give it a go!

  6. We painted our door SW Iron Ore, and it's beauuutiful. We kind of had to paint it because the previous owners had it in sea foam green. Bleh!

  7. We painted the outside of our front door black and I've been meaning to paint the inside as well. I think you've convinced me that it's worth doing, even if I hate the door itself! It really helps to make it look new and fancy!

  8. We have a craftsman style front door, which I love and its chartreuse on the outside and I kept feeling the white inside of the door was boring and then door was too pretty just to be white. So i painted it a few months back a warm mid tone grey and I love it!!! It really looks good in our living room space!! I also painted the inside our laundry room door a fun vibrant aqua!

  9. We painted all of our interior doors and front door black (on the hall side). I think it adds a really nice level of richness to our home. The only issue is that the doors are all older and we've had to do a few touch ups!

    The front door looks great!

  10. Our front door was painted black and the inside was wood. I painted it black the first week we moved in. Looks so much better. I don't know why more people don't do it.

  11. I have been tossing around the idea of painting ours as well! Our HOA won't allow us to paint the exterior color of the door, so I've settled on the idea of the interior portion being Teal... I'm at peace with it. ;)
