Five Great Smoothie Recipes!

Five Great Smoothie Recipes! | Chris Loves Julia

Chris makes our whole family smoothies almost every single morning for years and years! By now, he has them down and I thought it would be fun to share a few of our go-to recipes he has come up with. We used to go through blenders every couple months and finally invested in a Blendtec in 2012 and it has been a work horse, showing no signs of wear even after 4 years. We highly recommend it. You'll also see the same smoothie cup in all of these pictures. Chris takes his with him on the way to work, so we got these disposable cups and these wider straws that are perfect for smoothies.  Here are our five favorites!:

Five Great Smoothie Recipes! | Chris Loves Julia

Blueberry & Yogurt Smoothie (This one is so smooth and alkaline! When I was pregnant with Faye, it really helped ease my heartburn.)

3 cups frozen blueberries
2 cups frozen strawberries
1 cup plain, nonfat Greek yogurt
3 cups vanilla soy milk
2 tbsp agave nectar
Makes about 60 oz

Mango, Lime & Coconut Smoothie (This one is incredibly light, fresh and creamy.)

1 Fresh Banana
1.5 cups orange sherbet
4 cups frozen mango
Zest and juice from one lime
1/2 tsp fresh grated ginger
1 can full fat coconut milk
1 3/4 cup water
1 tsp honey
Makes about 60 oz

Orange & Berries Smoothie (This one is bright on the taste buds, especially when made with fresh squeezed oranges)

3.5 cups frozen strawberries
1.5 cups frozen blueberries
1.5 cups pineapple sherbet
1 cup ice
3 cups orange juice (fresh squeezed is best, but store-bought, not from concentrate, will work, too)
Makes about 50 oz

Cherry & Almond Smoothie (This one tastes like cherry muffins without the carbs! And only 3 ingredients!)

2 Fresh bananas
4 cups frozen dark cherries
4 cups vanilla almond milk
Makes about 60 oz

Peach, Greens & Honeydew Smoothie (Packed with a wide range of nutrients, with just the right amount of sweetness. Our girls gobble it down!)

4 cups frozen peaches
3 inch piece of fresh cucumber
1 handful of kale (ribs removed, washed thoroughly)
1 handful of spinach
2 handfuls of honeydew melon
2-4 fresh basil leaves (you can try mint instead if you'd like)
2 cups white grape juice
1 cup ice
Makes about 50 oz

Hope this makes your mornings a little brighter! Chris occasionally posts his smoothies on instagram (@smoothieoclock) so if you like these, check out more over there.

  1. Any insight on keeping supplied with all the ingredients? I don't live in Idaho, but maybe I can find equivalent places where I do live.

  2. What made you choose the Blendtec over other blenders like the Vitamix? I'm in the market for a new blender!

    1. My sister has a Vitamix and she absolutely loves it. Really, you probably can't go wrong between the two. Vitamix and Blendtec are both the top blenders out there. Blendtec has a slightly higher horse power, both have a 7 year warranty, but Blendtec's price is just a little better so we ended up going with it.

  3. These all look super yummy and dessert-like. Recently I've been doing a mix of peanut butter, kale/spinach, banana, and plain Greek yogurt that has a lot of protein and tastes like PB/banana since the kale and yogurt flavors are less intense. That last combo looks so good - may have to try that one next!

  4. I'll admit, there are days when I wish desperately that we used paper coffee cups so I didn't have to clean up our travel mugs. Life is hard.

  5. I can't wait to try the peach, greens, & honeydew! Such an interesting mix of ingredients compared to what I usually put in my smoothies.

  6. I love smoothies, but there's no way I could have these every morning - way too much sugar for me.

  7. These all sound DELISH and I'm so happy that most of them don't have bananas. I am (sadly) allergic, and it seems like they're in every. single. smoothie recipe! I'll definitely be trying these ones out. We're also in the market for a new blender... might have to go with that Blendtec! :)

    1. Bananas make them creamy so try avocado instead. Spinach, half avocado, coconut flakes, frozen berries and vanilla almond milk is my daily

    2. My local (favorite) juice bar uses frozen pears in about half of their smoothies instead of banana... it's a good swap! We buy a flat at Costco, let ripen, cut into chunks and freeze. More icy texture than banana, but fairly close in sweetness.

  8. Sounds yummy!! Think I'll try the orange one, I tend to like more of a citrus kick...

Just waiting for the "you're killing the enviroment by using disposable cups!" comment. *rolls eyes* everyone's a critic.

    1. I think the plastic cup comments are rarely meant to be critical or judgemental. It's important for all of us to make better, more earth-friendly choices everyday--because they really add up (for landfills and our wallets). Being thoughtful and conscious of your choices is something we all can work on and, hopefully, encourage our friends and loved to consider as well

      1. We knew we'd get a few comments about the cups Chris uses, and I appreciate your concern for the environment. Balance is very important.

      2. Comments about plastic cups are valid, even if they're critical and even judgmental. We all know we shouldn't use them. It's like people who smoke even with all the proof smoking is a bad thing to do. Or people who go to tanning beds. There is no excuse. At a certain point I think it is ok to judge people who make straight up bad choices with no regard to consequences.

Have you seen the images of dead marine animals, including sea turtles, with all the plastic in their bellies? Look at those for inspiration to make better choices.

I do appreciate that this is an honest post. At least they aren't pretending to have reusable cups and straws.

So points for honesty and good recipes but points off for the plastic.

Also you get mega points for the CO post.

      3. I love your blog but I cringed a little when I saw the cups you use and dispose of daily. If you'd consider another option, I'd like to recommend these cups and other eco products. You can even find them at Party City. http://www.ecoproducts.com/greenstripe_cold_cups.html

I recently had to plan a large 50th anniversary party for my architecture office and since Environmental Stewardship is one of our core values I found it necessary to carry our daily reusable, recyclable, or compostable practices into this event as well. I was very surprised by the options I found online and that they were still affordable and simple designs. I'll step off my unsolicited soap box now, but just had to share since we were surprisingly happy with these products. :) I have some frozen blueberries in my freezer right now waiting for me to try this recipe out tomorrow!

      4. I hope I didn't come off as judgmental. I respect you and your decisions that you find work best for you. I can't tell you how often I forget my reusable shopping bags or opt for the individual packaged foods for the convenience even though I know they are making more waste. We can't be perfect all the time. ;)

    2. I suppose I'm more surprised than critical about the plastic cup use. I understand the difficulty in parting with/avoiding disposables in on-the-go scenarios but if it's something you're consuming every day on a regular, predictable basis, that makes it a situation ripe for change to a reusable product. Why create waste if you can avoid it, is my thinking.

Thank you for sharing these smoothie recipes, though: I can't wait to get home to try out the mango lime one :)

  9. These all look truly delicious! I am actually going to give one of these a try today, thanks for sharing!!
