Adding Curtains to Our Pantry

I’ve wanted to add them to our pantry doors for a while, but I assumed I would need custom curtains and that it would be an expensive and time-consuming project. Spoiler alert: it’s neither.

File this under the “I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner” category.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a blog post about home decor trends and included curtains behind glass doors as one of the up-and-coming trends. I’ve wanted to add them to our pantry doors for a while, but I assumed I would need custom curtains and that it would be an expensive and time-consuming project. Spoiler alert: it’s neither.

While we still absolutely love our pantry design, having glass doors meant feeling pressure to keep the pantry tidy and organized at all times. At first, I thought the solution was better organization — decanting cereal and other pantry staples into canisters and tucking everything neatly into baskets. But I quickly realized that decanting adds a layer of work I’m just not interested in, and maintaining a perfectly organized space takes ongoing effort — especially with a busy family of five.

When we were getting ready to host an event at our house, I decided the curtains could no longer wait. I’d much rather spend a little time installing curtains than meticulously tidying the pantry every time guests come over.

I picked up these sheer, linen-like curtains along with some thin café rods from Lowe’s and tasked Chris with installing them on the back of the pantry doors (Tip: Choose curtains that are about twice the width of the glass — they look better when slightly scrunched). It took him less than 15 minutes per door, and I simply slid the café rods through both the top and bottom curtain pockets.

The whole project took under 30 minutes and cost less than $50. I’m so glad we finally tackled this one — I love the look of the curtains, and even more, I love not feeling like my pantry has to stay perfectly tidy all the time.

If you want to try this yourself, I saved all of the tools and materials we used here.
