Wallpaper + Lighting Pairings We Love for Small Space Water Closets

Small space, big design opportunity. Here are some of our favorite wallpaper, lighting, and art pairings for creating a water closet that feels thoughtful, layered, and a little unexpected.

There are so many reasons to love a water closet in a bathroom, but one of our favorites has to be that it’s a small space where you can create a big design moment. Because it’s compact, wallpaper makes an outsized impact. And since most water closets don’t have windows, we say lean all the way in — go dark, go moody, make it feel intentional. It’s the ultimate jewel box opportunity.

It’s also one of the most budget-friendly places to make a statement. Because the footprint is small, you need fewer materials — less wallpaper, less trim, less everything — which means you can stretch your budget toward something a little more special without the overall cost climbing too high. It’s the perfect spot to splurge smart.

In our primary bathroom water closet, we added a striped wallpaper between the trim work and it gave the space that little extra something that makes it feel thoughtful and special instead of purely functional. Those layered details go a long way in a small footprint.

And don’t forget the ceiling. If you have taller ceilings, a hanging pendant (like this one in our primary bath water closet) adds instant personality. Lower ceilings? A semi-flush mount still brings the drama without overwhelming the room. Even though these are small spaces, don’t skip the art — we love adding art in a bathroom. It’s what makes the space feel collected and finished.

Below are some of our favorite wallpaper + lighting + art pairings — easy, no-fail formulas for creating a layered, high-impact water closet (and honestly, they work beautifully beyond that space, too).

1. Grasscloth + Crystal Pendant + Moody Cloudscape

Grasscloth already feels inherently luxe, so why not lean all the way in? Pairing it with a crystal pendant (this one is a great double take of our bathroom chandelier!) instantly elevates the space, and adding a museum-worthy art piece finishes the look with that collected, gallery-like feel.

2. Striped Wallpaper + Color Pop Pendant + Vintage Landscape

On first glance you might think this tonal stripe automatically reads beachy, but pair it with a pendant in a eye-catching contrasting color and a piece of moody vintage art and it takes on a whole different feel. It instantly feels more layered, collected, and a little unexpected.

3. Traditional Floral Wallpaper + Modern Silver + Traditional Landscape

The key to using ultra-traditional patterns like damask is to pair them with modern elements to keep the room feeling fresh and unexpected. Like in our powder bath makeover, pairing this traditional pattern with a pop of modern silver adds just the right amount of contrast.

4. Plaid Wallpaper + Milk Glass + Modern Photography

This one is giving Ralph Lauren, and we’re not mad about it. The vintage-inspired milk glass pendant and plaid wallpaper lean fully into that classic, traditional look, while a piece of modern photographic art adds just the right amount of unexpected whimsy to keep the whole space feeling balanced.

5. Traditional Paneling Wallpaper + Sculptural Fabric + Oval Art

Wallpaper | Pendant | Art

If you love the look of old-world paneling but not the price tag, this wallpaper is such a good stand-in. To balance the heavier, traditional feel, we’d pair it with a light and airy sculptural pendant and a round or oval-framed art piece to soften the overall look

6. Toile Wallpaper + Rattan + Vintage Portrait

Wallpaper | Pendant | Art

Toile has been around for centuries for a reason. To give it a more modern spin, we went with an oversized, slightly more abstract toile and paired it with an unexpected material — rattan. And to keep the space feeling grounded in tradition, we added a vintage portrait to tie it all together.

7. Modern Abstract Wallpaper + Traditional Semi-Flush Mount + Line Drawing

This wallpaper has an abstract, organic pattern that almost reads like natural stone. To let it do most of the talking, we kept the other elements on the quieter side with a traditional semi-flush mount and a simple line drawing. To really make the wallpaper shine, we’d suggest adding a contrasting trim color in a warm tone like ochre for a little extra depth and definition.

8. Landscape Mural + Geometric Pendant + Petite Wall Mirror

Wall Mural | Pendant | Mirror

This (surprisingly budget-friendly) wall mural really steals the show here. To keep the space feeling fresh without pulling too much attention from the main event, we’d pair it with a pendant that has modern, geometric lines for a little contrast against the mural’s organic pattern. And a petite mirror adds a fun peek-a-boo moment without competing with the mural.

9. Modern Organic Wallpaper + Traditional Gold + Landscape Duo

This is the only wallpaper I’ve loved enough to use twice! With an organic pattern like this one, we’d keep the lighting simple with a traditional semi-flush mount that has a clean, linear shape. Then we’d double down on the nature-inspired vibe with a duo of tree art prints to tie everything together.
