Since we launched traditional wallpaper with A-Street Prints, we’re getting questions from a lot of people with renewed interest in wallpaper! Some people love the traditional wallpaper, while others want to go a more DIY route. Good news, we have peel-and-stick wallpaper too! Some people are nervous about installing peel-and-stick wallpaper without a professional, but it isn’t that hard when you have the right tools and process. We’ll let you in on all our tips so you can feel confident to install peel-and-stick wallpaper in your own home!
While we hired out the installation of the peel-and-stick wallpaper in Greta’s room, Chris and I have installed a lot of wallpaper over the years and decided to tackle a two-day room makeover in our CLJ Studio this summer. A couple of months later, Chris helped his brother, Brandon, put up a dark botanical peel-and-stick wallpaper in his family’s dining room. (Spoiler: It turned out so good!!)

Tools That Make Installing Peel-and-Stick Wallpaper Easier

Listen, you don’t need all of these tools to install peel-and-stick wallpaper. But will they make your life easier? Yes. Yes, they will. I’ve heard about couples who couldn’t speak to each for days after installing wallpaper together. Don’t let that happen to you.
These are a few things that we like to have on hand for peel-and-stick wallpaper install day:
Tips to Make the Install Go More Smoothly (Pun Intended)
- Grab a buddy. You can install peel-and-stick wallpaper alone, but it’s just much easier for two people—or even three. (Brandon took the photos below but he was helping on the rest of the install!)
- The first roll of wallpaper is the hardest. One thing to note is that not all ceiling lines are completely parallel to the floor. If you want to avoid things looking slanted later, you should grab that level and use it on the first roll at the top. It helps to actually add some overage to the top, so you can trim it perfectly later on.
- It helps to have one person holding the new roll and guiding it along the seam for a seamless repeat while the other person is smoothing the wallpaper with the squeegee.
- If you feel like the wallpaper is getting off on an angle (like it’s shifting too much) pull up more wallpaper than you think you should to adjust that area. Spreading out your adjustment over a longer space will allow you to get wrinkles out. if you try and shift it too much over a small span, you’re going to have one large wrinkle that will be hard to smooth out.
- Take your time and have a good playlist! Once the wallpaper is all up, you can use your craft knife to trim along the molding or baseboards for a clean edge.
