Casual Friday

Casual Friday: August 10, 2018

August 10, 2018

This has been a roller-coaster week! First of all, thank you SO much for the overwhelming response to the CLJ Design Services we launched with Modsy yesterday! It's honestly such a dream come true and something we've been working for months on. To see so many of you just as excited has been so rewarding.

The downside of the week was when a project that I have been working on and designing for the better part of July got dropped by the sponsor. It was a shared boys room and considering we had never done a boys room, I was really looking forward to sharing my insights and the whole process and some great DIY projects around the room with you. Sometimes these things happen and it's a part of the job, but considering all the design work was done and the boys already knew and were excited about their new room--it was harder to just walk away from. I decided to pitch the project idea to Lowe's and they were on board to sponsor the room! While figuring out the space, I realized boys' rooms are generally way more in my color palette of choice, but one of the boys requested his favorite color--RED! (#curveball) Can't wait to take you along!

Other fun things this week!

• Discovered this new-to-me Etsy shop this week and the art is fresh and fun. I especially love this sisters print that reminds me so much of me and my sisters! (Just need two more. ;)

• I got this yellow striped tee this week for a song, and it's gotta be the happiest shirt in existence.

Literally every day for the past 68 years. (made me laugh so hard)

• Chris and I finally finished watching The Staircase this week. Do you think Michael Peterson did it? (We both think he is innocent).

• Love this minimalistic maple growth chart.

Tamara Magel is a genius and this photo is giving me all sorts of cabin inspiration for our raw pine walls.

• Speaking of the cabin, we decided on and ordered the wood floors for the cabin this week! The response is mixed--some of you are so excited, some of you are confused or disappointed--but we can't wait! (and strangely, we love a good split audience) See where we're headed here!

• We answered so many questions about negative comments, whether we're keeping the trampoline after Greta broke her arm, what we'd recommend if you and your partner can't agree on a design, and much more in this week's CLJ Q&A right here. One question we didn't get to, but really want to was, "How do you make a new construction home feel homier?" I think there's no way to add character and personality faster than art. And there's not a room in our home that I haven't added some form of art or photo to! Even inside of our pantry, I added a photo of Greta cooking from when she was little, matted and framed. You can find our favorite sources for art here. But don't be afraid to look through old books, magazines or frame some candid photos like we did here. We love Framebridge for professional and easy framing, but if you're on a tighter budget, buy a budget frame and to make it look even more special, go for a custom mat. (Usually any place that frames will do this for a couple bucks!) ...Also, lamps make everything feel homier. ;)

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

  1. Any ideas when we can see a sneak peak at the boys room project you're working on? We just started building built in bunk beds for our boys room and I'd love some inspiration for the rest of it!!

  2. “The staircase” makes Michael Peterson seem innocent, but if you keep reading and listening, it seems a lot less certain. There’s a podcast called “Beyond Reasonable Doubt” that is very interesting and interviews him as well as others.

  3. I already purchased my modsy when I saw your last post! I tried Modsy last fall for our great room and never found a layout we liked. I'm waiting to hear back from Modsy if they can "transfer" my room pics/measurements, etc. to your queue because I know you could do something amazing with it. Thanks for sharing your talent Julia and Chris!

  4. We’ll, granted that the show was filmed around him and his perspective mostly, it may be skewed, but I think 100% he is innocent. AT first I almost didn’t keep watching because I thought it wasn’t going anywhere because he was so clearly distraught he must have been innocent. Then all the twist and turns ensued. Most people believed in his innocence until their prejudice was triggered by biphobia and he Germany thing and fueled by incompetent “experts”. Even the judge admitted that he shouldn’t have admitted that prejudicial evidence. I would have loved to see a retrial with a more fair playing field, but I get why he didn’t trust the system anymore.

  5. I am so excited about your cabin floor choice!!! Also, I was cracking up watching you guys make the decision. It 100% reminded me of my husband's thought process. So great! I can't wait to see it once it's all installed!

  6. We have a trampoline and my daughter broke her arm jumping on my sister-in-laws trampoline! She ended up rebreaking it 7 months later when she tripped at school. Accidents happen!

  7. At the end of episode 1 I was convinced he was guilty, at the end - I don't know. BUT I am 1000% sure she did not die from falling down the stairs!

      1. I'm totally into the owl theory too, it all fits! I think she was attacked, stumbled inside and then maybe slipped on some blood and hit her head, etc. Remembering she had drugs and alcohol on her system, coordination was comprised.
Owls, and birds in general, can be pretty vicious. In Australia we have Magpies which are well known for attacking people's heads.
I think Michael was a little suspicious but I think it was just his manner, and kind of awkwardness about have to discuss very personal details of his life in public. And I certainly don't blame him for that.
The bit I found most strange was the very different accounts of the crime scene in Germany. But I'm inclined to believe the official police report of the scene, which was clear that it was natural causes, and did not mention excessive blood at the scene.
Such an amazing series though, particularly the level of access granted to the cameras and the time span in crosses.

    1. It’s going to look AMAZING... I mean, everything you guys do does! I’m loving those two light fixtures in the picture... do you happen to know where they are from? They would fit perfectly in my moms house!

My Storage Hack for Organizing Christmas Decorations

Every year when I pack up the decorations after Christmas, I collect all of the garlands together in one box, I get all the candlesticks together in another box, and all my nativity sets go into their own box. We label the boxes "garlands," "candles," "nativity sets,"...which seems great until you remember that you have […]

Cranberry-Glazed Ham

What do you make for Christmas dinner? Sometimes we'll do a prime rib or a roast turkey, but this year, I'm going all out with a Christmas ham that just looks festive. For this recipe, I made a cranberry-orange glaze with some warm winter spices that takes this ham to the next level. Oh and […]

There's nothing worse when I'm out on a fun holiday outing taking video memories of my family, and I see that red light. Or I'm traveling and stuck in the airport on a layover...it gives me anxiety!
