How to Turn Any Room into a Guest Room for the Holidays

We’re spilling all our favorite secrets for making your overnight company feel like they checked into a boutique hotel—even if they’re sleeping in the home office. Plus, get our ultimate welcome basket must-haves!

When it comes to hosting overnight guests, remember: any room can be a guest room. Does it have a door? Great — you’re in business.

Over the years, I’ve transformed my home office, home gym, and even the playroom into a cozy space for company. With a bit of prep and creativity, your guests will feel perfectly at home — even if they’re technically staying in your office.

Start with a Bed (or Something Like It)

If the room doesn’t have a bed or a pull-out sofa, invest in a high-profile air mattress. The deluxe versions are more than 26 inches off the ground and feel surprisingly substantial — a far cry from the camping air mattresses of the past.

Add a Makeshift Nightstand

Every guest needs a surface for their phone, water, and book — so if the room doesn’t already have a nightstand, get creative. I keep a few wooden folding tables on hand for this exact purpose. I top them with a cordless lamp and a phone charger (because someone always forgets one). Or you can move a side table into your space temporarily.

When my home office doubled as a guest room, I set a fancy tray on the ottoman to serve as a nightstand — it looked intentional and elegant. Don’t be afraid to rearrange and rethink what furniture can do.

Provide a Place for Luggage

Closets aren’t always available or convenient for guests. In that case, a luggage rack is a game-changer.
I own four (no shame) and set them up depending on how many guests I’m expecting. They keep bags elevated, off the floor, and tidy — small details that make a big difference when you’re living out of a suitcase for a few days.

Assemble a Welcome Basket

This is my favorite part. I always put together a small gift basket for overnight guests — a thoughtful touch that makes them feel extra welcome. Mine typically includes:

  • A big bottle of water
  • Snack mix
  • Gum or mints
  • Mouthwash
  • Makeup wipes
  • Hand sanitizer

Sometimes I’ll add a fun face mask or lip balm for a little surprise. It’s simple, but it makes people feel like they’re on vacation at a boutique hotel.

Set Them Up with Wifi

Display the Wifi password prominently somewhere (try downloading a printable from Etsy to make it cute), and frame it on a nightstand.

Don’t Forget the Bathroom

If you have a guest bathroom, stock it with fresh towels (these are my favorites) and a new loofah or shower poof (leave the tag on so they know it’s just for them). I also stash the extra toothbrushes from my dentist visits in the guest bathroom — no one likes having to ask for one.

If you’re sharing your own bathroom with guests, still set aside a neat pile of clean towels and a new poof so they know what’s theirs. It’s a small gesture that keeps things easy and comfortable for everyone.

Hosting overnight guests doesn’t require a dedicated guest room — just a little forethought and flexibility. With a few quick swaps and thoughtful touches, any room in your home can transform into a welcoming retreat.
