We’re making moves on our first big renovation project of the year! The primary bathroom is full speed ahead. (If you want to catch up on the latest layout and elevations, check out this post.) I was so excited to show you a sneak peek at the inspiration I’ve collected for the finishes in last week’s Love Letter. My process is to narrow down a Pinterest board with my selects, and then put all of those into Canva as a mood board to see how the pieces will truly fit together. And they. are. SINGING!

Without further ado, here is my vision for our upcoming bathroom renovation:

The Primary Bathroom Mood Board—In Detail!

  1. Elegantly trimmed out walls are first! In our bedroom, we have raised molding on our walls, but in the bathroom, we’d like to add recessed paneling to all the walls with chair rail and insane crown molding. My vision for this room is to help it FEEL like an actual room anyone would want to hang out in. And so we’re departing from tiled walls in favor of architectural trim.
  2. The prettiest sconces flanking the his and her mirrors on either side of the tub nook. Which is a far cry from getting ready in front of a mirror that’s completely backlit by a window with spotlights shining down! While we’re at it, the mirrors will be recessed medicine cabinets as well!
  3. I love to mix metals, and so in the hardware, we’re bringing in some beautiful antique brass knobs. I’ll likely mix in some vintage-looking pulls as well.
  4. Chris and I debated for weeks about the cased opening of the tub nook, and we couldn’t agree on the shape. UNTIL! We decided to mimic our range nook shape and then we both got excited. It feel so special, and I love a call-back to another design element in the house.
  5. I still need to choose a lot of different lighting, including a chandelier for the main bathroom space, but these semi-flush mount lights felt so perfect for our his and her closets.
  6. The Artifacts collection from Kohler is one of our favorites for a timeless look. We have the faucets in our kitchen so it was natural to bring them back in the bathroom. I’m a sucker for polished nickel plumbing fixtures, so we’ll do that for the whole suite.
  7. When it comes to floor tile, I like to think of the shower floor and bathroom floor separately. You want smaller tile for the shower floor so that it can easily lead to a drain. I love the inspiration of this pattern that fits in so well with the other tile floors in our home (which are all black and white!)
  8. We were initially going for a built-in, undermount tub with a stone surround, but we swapped it out for this beautiful free-standing tub. I do think built in tubs are making a major comeback, but we have a built in tub currently and it’s such a pain to close the window coverings. And for that reason alone, we’re excited for a free-standing option that will give us about 10 inches on each side to maneuver around it.
  9. See number 6 on why we chose this faucet, but one surprising fact: This is our first bathroom renovation that we’re not doing wall-mounted faucets. Our other homes leaned a little more modern than this one, so we’re excited about a wide spread deck-mounted faucet this time around.
  10. We’re always thinking about height when it comes to vanities. (Our current one comes just above my knees—I wish I was lying. One beautiful way we’re adding even more height is a thick traditional countertop edge profile. We’re going with a really veiny marble countertop for beautiful movement and intrigue.
  11. Nothing clicked for me in this bathroom until I committed to the floor tile. I was all over the map, light dark, small, big. But when I stopped and looked at the tile in the rest of our home, I knew I wanted to repeat black & white tile in our bathroom here. And with our bedroom color as dark brown, I knew our bathroom walls would need to be lighter. Which means…..darker floors!! And they’re definitely going to be heated for ultimate comfort.
  12. One of the last things we chose was the color of our closet cabinetry. It felt like a nice place to bring in a color, and I love this Hampton Grey cabinetry from Stoffer Home. I think it’s one of their new colors!
  13. Lastly, we’re going with darker wood vanities. (Easiest decision for me!) Stoffer Home’s Newcastle color looks like a rich walnut and we’re using their Regent Vanity line in 54″.

I can’t wait to start ordering and scheduling out the installs! It’s coming together…

  1. Bathroom came out beautiful. I am under construction on mine and my wife loves the raised panel, chair rail look. Where did you get that material? I have been trying to piece together some things but it doesn’t look right like yours

  2. I absolutely love this. My bathroom and closet have almost the same layout. And let me tell you. Everyone is awed when they see it. And with your attention to detail it will be stunning. I wish I could upload pictures to show you. Will you install wallpaper behind the mirrors?

  3. I’m a bath person so I definitely wanted an undermount tub. I LOVE it. I read or even watch a show with a glass of wine perched on the stone surround. I have motorized blinds so I never have a problem with privacy. While free standing tubs are beautiful, I think they are going out because they are so impractical.

  4. I have similar scones beside the mirrors in our primary bathroom and love the gentle wash of light. Plus they remind me of old fashioned barber poles! 💈 (my husband does not see it)

I’m excited to see this dream come to fruition.

  5. It’s going to be so beautiful! I can’t wait to follow along; those are my favorite posts. Are you replacing the arched window behind the bathtub with a square one? That would look amazing.
