Painting of the Week | In the Lake

July 18, 2014

I probably shouldn't refer to this project as painting of the week anymore, because the consistency is really lacking. But it's something I so look forward to when I do have spare moments throughout the week.

Last week, while all of my sisters were here, we spent one day at the lake--mostly so our kids could swim. All of the gear that comes along on these outings is incredible. Towels, shovels, buckets, puddle jumpers, sunscreen, snacks! The kids were swimming and my sisters and I were wading watching them and chatting. And sooner than later they got tired and wanted crackers and once we got them set up, we left them on shore with my sister's boyfriend and swam. The water was chilly but in a refreshing way. I went under water, despite my mascara, and jumped off a diving dock floating in the middle of the dark lake. My feet didn't touch the ground. I did it two more times. I just kept repeating, this feels so good--so free.

The experience was a refreshing one. Something I keep thinking back to. Swimming so freely--I haven't done that since Greta was born. It's silly how simple it was, but it impacted me and I can't wait to do it again.

This week's painting is an abstract version of my time in that lake. The original is available for purchase here. Prints in 4 different frame-friendly sizes are available here.

Happy Weekend! Any swimming in your plans?

    1. A lot do look similar that you see--because they are at high demand right now. I paint all kinds of things for commissions (homes, landscapes, people!) I am sure in a couple months or years...maybe days, I'll share them here. But you can catch some different styles on Instagram.

  1. Ah! So bummed I missed this! I have a few of your prints but was hoping to snag an original as a graduation present to myself.

Do you ever recreate similar ones for order?

  2. I never know what to do when I have a free minute not watching kids around pools. Seriously! When my Dad was here over the 4th, Ryan and I had a race and it was so much fun! I forgot that I can have FUN too in the pool!

Oh and PS. I BEAT RYAN too. Ask my Dad though, don't ask Ryan to confirm :-)

The Fisherman Aesthetic that Is Making Waves

I haven't released my official 2025 trend predictions, but the fisherman aesthetic is one of the early styles of the year that has completely enraptured me. This trend is a departure from everyone's favorite coastal grandma look, which features Nancy Meyer-inspired whites, khakis, and soft blues. This aesthetic is your Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic […]
