Photo Power

August 30, 2011
There are a few last minute projects that I did before the big gathering on Sunday that I didn't have the chance to share with you last week.  And since I am right in the middle of shopping around for a new, fancy shmancy camera, I thought today would be the perfect time to talk about the power of photos in your home.  Our home is doused with art.  Prints. Paintings.  Large canvases.  Although most of them are personal works of art that I am happy to display, we were really missing the personal touch photos add to a space.  So, the bare stairway wall got a few really important photos displayed on it.
We toyed with the idea of hanging more "stuff" on the wall.  We even anchored a shelf and propped up a whole bunch of vases and oversized letters.  Then we took it down.  Then we tried to incorporate some art with the photos--and we took it down.   While sitting on our couch, staring at the wall, we both felt really content with the three frames with three monumental pictures in them.
The one on the far left is Chris and I dancing at our wedding.  Our reception was in an airplane hangar and although there were lots of people there, our photographer captured us just the way we felt at the time: like it was only us.  ....and that dude in the left corner.

The one in the middle is of our first home.  This home.  This place that we have come to love and have put so much sweat and time into.  Neither of us think we will live here forever, but our first home will always be special to us.

The photo on the right is one that my mother-in-law snapped of us just last month.  It wasn't posed.  It wasn't planned.  It just happened and we all look pretty happy--which we are.   We are a family of three right now and we are loving our little Greta-girl.  It is a photo that sums up our life pretty perfectly.
Although we have simplified the wall waaayyy down (see what it used to look like here), we are not firm on keeping just these three frames, although we have decided to reserve this wall just for photos.   As life goes on and changes and more monumental or dear-to-us memories are captured, we will add them to the wall, and be able to reflect back.

Do you have a place for monumental photos?  Is your home suffering from art overload without a single snapshot?  Do you miss our old gallery wall?  We are so amazed at what three little photos did to help our house feel more like our home.

  1. These frames are from Ross. $7.99 each. Not super fancy, but they work for now. I love the look of a big white mat and who knows, maybe a few pictures will be in color down the road....I hadn't even thought of that!

  2. I am dying for a photo wall, but it is just not in the cards for us right now. I'm trying to stop myself from buying cheap frames from walmart and just waiting a couple more years and really invest in nice frames that will last. Everytime I see a nice pic of us I'm like dang it, we need to start a picture wall!!!

BUT, my dad is BIG time obsessed with the picture wall we had in Seattle and the one we now have in NC. He has picked each picture perfectly. I always love coming home to see if he has added anything to the wall. All the frames are black, but the pictures are in color. Which i like too. But I am definitely partial to the black frames, white mat, and b/w pictures.

    Love the simplicity...
