Without further ado, let me share some fun summer party ideas that you can put together just a few days or hours before people come over!

1. The Ultimate Ultimate Hot Dog Bar (Best for Large Crowds)

Starting off with one of the easiest parties to throw down: a hot dog party! This one is great for a Fourth of July party or family reunion. For us, the difference between throwing hot dogs on the grill and an actual party is in the toppings bar. You’ll want to go above and beyond with the options.

Get our three different mustards. Put out some kimchi and sauerkraut. Offer multiple kinds of pickles and peppers. Maybe a grilled corn salad that doubles as a side dish or some fresh slaw (find both of these recipes in this post). All you need to do is add some bags of chips, sparkling water, and pop, and you’re set to feed a crowd! Fourth of July party? Signed and delivered. Family reunion? You’re the hero. Work party? You’ve earned their goodwill for weeks.

Tip: I like to serve chips straight out of the bag, top edges folded down, and stacked upright in some flat-bottom baskets (like these). The bags stay upright for easy access and there’s no decanting involved (or trying to pour the leftovers back into the bag after the party is over).

You can even spice it up (literally) by having a hot sauce tasting game. Chris rounded up his favorite hot sauces if you want to get the wheels turning…

2. Nostalgic S’mores Night & Campfire Combos

This is a party idea that the whole family always loves! There’s something so charmingly simple about toasting marshmallows by the fire—sparring over who gets the most even browning and laughing when one inevitably goes up in flames. It’s the kind of activity that’s great for all ages!

Just grab some roasting sticks (I like these) and huddle around your fire pit, gas flame or tabletop (like a Solo stove) for a nostalgic sweet treat. I like to put all of the ingredients out on a tray so it’s easy for guests to grab what they need easily. If you want to put your own unique spin on it, try Chris’s blackberry campfire s’mores recipe or mix it up with one of the combos we created below!

3. Backyard Dive-In Movie Night

Last year, we finally made our outdoor movie night dreams a reality, and let me tell you, it was every bit the ultimate summer experience we imagined! You just need to grab a portable projector, an outdoor movie screen, and pool floats.

We’re talking floating food trays, glowing lights, and a portable projector that made watching Honey, I Shrunk the Kids from the pool an absolute blast for everyone. Seriously, why did we wait so long?! This magic-making evening is surprisingly easy to pull off for any budget, creating those core memories you’ll treasure forever, and we’re already counting down to our next one – you’ve gotta try it!

4. Wood-Fired Pizza Party (Tomato Girl Summer Edition)

Many moons ago, when gluten and I were still friends, we threw an outdoor pizza party with the most fun little wood-fired pizza oven! Nowadays, the Ooni options have taken the internet by storm, but you can also make pizzas on the grill. Chris turned the topping bar into an epic snack board with everything from prosciutto to anchovies (trust us on that last one!). Everyone will love snacking on charcuterie while watching the pizza maestro (that’s you) dazzle.

Set up a fun drink bar with all the fizzy fixings and shatter-proof tumblers because, let’s be real, even kids are all about those cheers! And since it’s “tomato girl summer,” I’m inspired to layer bunches of tomatoes on the vine and cute little pots of basil across the outdoor table as decor. Give the kids little chef hats and aprons, and make topping personal pizzas an activity. With just a few ingredients, you’ve got the perfect hub for the party of the summer.

5. Lawn Games Tournament: Friendly Backyard Competition

I have a lot of food-themed parties on this list because, well, Chris loves to cook and we like to eat. But our family also loves to play games, and there’s also room for some friendly competition on the list! Cornhole is always a favorite, but I have even more ideas for you.

We love to hang out and play games in our yard all summer long, especially in the evenings as the temperatures cool. You won’t believe how much you can laugh at kids vs. adults in a good old-fashioned sack race, or how sweet it will be when your granddad teaches your daughter how to play croquet. You can find very aesthetic badminton and bocce ball sets these days, too! Set up a bunch of games and do a round robin. Try picking up mini trophies and handing them out at the end of the day to the winners. I think anyone would relish being awarded the cornhole crown!

If you want to keep everyone cool, this is the perfect time to bring out your Ninja Slushi maker: it can keep drinks frozen for hours!

6. Authentic Low Country Seafood Boil

Y’all, get ready to host the quintessential party of the south–a seafood boil! This isn’t just a meal; it’s a whole experience that screams fun and friendship.

Clean-up hack: Use an oversized roll of butcher paper. W e’re talking minimal dishes, maximum flavor, and an all-around good time. The secret to success lies in the timing – adding each ingredient at just the right moment – but don’t worry, we’re spilling all the beans so your next gathering is an absolute hit.

7. The Summer Dip & Pool Dip Party

I’m not the first to come up with this potluck party idea, but it’s just so fun, I had to include it! Invite all of your friends to a party where you gather in your backyard, and everyone brings dips to share! They can be store-bought or homemade. Mini Crock-Pots can keep the hot dips hot (think buffalo chicken dip, spinach artichoke dip, or chocolate fondue) while an insulated bowl can keep the cold dips chilled (it’s not a party without 7-layer dip, hummus, guacamole, or fruit dip).

The final activity? Invite everyone to take a dip, whether that’s jumping in the pool, running through the sprinklers, doing a slip-and-slide, or an inflatable water park! Grab some fun floats and set out some lawn games for easy activities. This works well as a mid-afternoon party when you don’t want to work too hard ahead of time. Bags of tortilla chips, corn chips, pork rinds, and wavy cut potato chips alongside carrots, celery, snap peas, and cucumber slices are perfect accompaniments. Start a sign-up for each family to bring a dip and dipper, and you have the makings of a new summer tradition.

  1. Try out hot dog toppings from around the world! We love toppings from Chile (smashed avocado, chopped fresh tomatoes, mayo), Colombia (ketchup, mustard, crushed potato chips, shredded coconut), Germany (sauerkraut and fried onions), and more!
