I recently picked up a vintage lamp with a rattan lampshade during an antiquing trip with my sisters, and it got me thinking about how I love to make rattan work in my moody, modern, traditional home.
It’s hard to find rattan that doesn’t immediately give off a beachy vibe—that was part of the inspiration behind our rattan collection with Shades of Light. I love how it can add a softer silhouette and feel to a traditional space when it has a smaller, tighter weave. And rattan actually blends beautifully with cottage style, another one of my favorite looks.

To make rattan work in a more traditional or cottage setting, the key is to ground it with moody colors. Think deep blues, rich greens, or even charcoal grays on your walls, upholstery, or rugs. Also, try to incorporate a variety of darker wood tones. Mixing in pieces of mahogany, walnut, or even painted black wood alongside your rattan items will prevent the space from feeling too light, airy, or overly coastal.
By combining rattan with a moody palette and diverse wood finishes, you can create a layered, traditional-style interior that’s far from the typical beach house vibe. Here are some mood boards I put together inspired by our new lighting collection!
Mood Board: Traditional Elegance with Natural Warmth
This look features a floral upholstered chair, a dark wood pedestal table, and a scalloped rattan light fixture, all grounded by a striped rug. It evokes a cozy, sophisticated cottage or study aesthetic with an inviting charm.

Mood Board: Grounded Elegance with Natural Touches
This look combines a bold, striped upholstered bed and a dark nightstand with the organic shapes of a rattan sconce and botanical art. A patterned, traditional rug grounds the bedroom, while the black & white tree prints give off a hint of nature-inspired calm.

Mood Board: Grand Entryway with Botanical Flair
This look marries a stately, dark wood hall tree with antique-inspired botanical wallpaper and a bold checkered floor (they’re peel-and-stick tiles!). The rattan light fixture and shiny metal umbrella stand add a glow, creating a welcoming entry or mudroom.
