My Back-to-School Shopping List

Getting ready for back to school? I’m sharing my picks for school supplies like backpacks and lunch boxes for my kids before a new year kicks off.

I really can’t believe it’s almost August. That always reminds me of one of the key to-dos: back-to-school shopping! I’m already diving into the essentials for my girls. If that’s where you’re headed too, I’m putting together my back-to-school shopping list for elementary-age kids through middle schoolers through teens in high school—since I now have one of each!

Shop The Mudroom

My go-to list always starts with the basics: backpacks, lunch boxes, and water bottles. I also like to get a head start on school supplies for homework and even look into new shoes. My hair care drawer gets a major refill this time of year, since I always do the girls’ hair at the kitchen island while they’re having breakfast. It’s one of our little traditions that I hope never changes!

I was just at the store, and I saw all the locker decorations they had on display. It immediately brought me back to my own school days! I used to love decorating my locker with a mirror and all sorts of fun stuff. Do high school kids even have lockers anymore? I know Greta had one in middle school. Speaking of—I can’t believe Faye is heading to middle school! What a big milestone.

It’s actually a bit bittersweet for me. While I’m grateful Greta is accustomed to high school now, going to middle school is a new chapter for Faye. I always had at least two of my sisters with me at school, except for my senior year when it was just one. And now my girls will all be at different schools. It’s going to be a tough transition when summer ends. Getting ready for it now is helping me feel more prepared!

My Back-to-School Essentials

Mail Sorter

Every parent of school age kids knows the overwhelming amount of papers they bring home. I’ve found that having something to corral these in means they’re a lot less likely to end up scattered across my kitchen island. This rattan sorter would do the trick and look beautiful in any space.

Magnetic Frames

I cannot imagine a better thing to put in a locker than these little magnetic frames! I’d have my girls print some of their favorite photos with my Instax printer to fill these with.

UNbrush

I’ve stocked our hair drawer with these since this is the only brush my girls will use now. Gets those tangles out quickly and painlessly during the school day morning rush.

Sneakers

One of our back to school traditions is to buy a new pair of sneakers for the girls. I help narrow down the options and then let them choose, it’s always fun to see their personalities come through in their picks!

P.S. – I’ve rounded up even more options for back-to-school shoes for boys and girls here!

Academic Planner

When I was Greta’s age, I loved having an academic planner to keep all of my homework to-dos organized. This one is so pretty I’d be tempted to keep it for myself!

Sharpies

Back to school means labeling everything. I stock up on a big pack of Sharpies that we keep in the kitchen desk to use all school year long.

Lunchbox Notes

Serve lunch with a side of the giggles they can share with friends. These notes make it so easy to add a little personal touch to their day so they know that you’re thinking of them.

Backpack

If I were going back to school, this Jansport backpack is what I would have. The brown corduroy feels so classic, and I’ve got a feeling it’s one that’ll get used all year long. I rounded up more backpack options here!

Water Bottle

We’ve got back-to-school on the brain, and this water bottle keeps popping up on my list. I love the clean design and the fact that it actually fits in a backpack side pocket. It’s one of those things I know they’ll each end up using every single day.

Desk Lamp

For their desk or any spot they’ll be hunkering down for homework. A good lamp makes all the difference when it comes to getting their schoolwork or art projects done.

Pencil Pouch

I can’t imagine a cuter organizational method than these pouches. The different sizes are great for keeping track of pens and other school supplies… no one wants to be digging at the bottom of a backpack for those things!

Shelf with Hooks

Having a spot to corral backpacks and jackets is essential—especially during the school year. Even if you don’t have space for a full mudroom, a simple wall shelf with hooks instantly creates a drop zone in an entryway or hallway that keeps the chaos in check.

Lunch Box

I know it might be controversial, but I’m not a bento box girl. I know they work so well for other families but I’m a fan of a simple, more versatile lunchbox for my girls. This one even comes with a little pocket for notes!
