Everything And the Kitchen Sink

April 15, 2013
Our old sink was pretty standard--sub par. 17 years old. So when we were planning our kitchen remodel, a new sink had to happen.
We wanted an undermount sink with one deep basin and fell in love with this 30"Kraus sink:
After the undersides of the countertops were sealed three times--we were gearing ourselves up for days--ya know, building anxiety--to cut out the sink hole.  And although we tracked down a router from a friend that we could use, when we tried it on a scrap piece of wood--it was just as hard and terrifying as we imagined it was going to be.  So we called in a professional who charged us $30 for the job.  We already had the template drawn, so it only took him maybe 15 minutes.  We sanded the whole area thoroughly and then added silicone for the sink to adhere to.
The sink came with a bunch of braces, to hold the sink very securely in place, that we spaced around the whole thing and drove screws through.
The end result is pretty swoon-worthy.  The sink came with a rack that has protective feet and side bumpers to protect the sink from scratches that we'll keep in place most of the time.

We actually installed the sink before we finished the countertops, and then after the counters had cured we installed the new faucet--but we'll save those details for later this week.

P.s. I am doing some traveling this week, but will still be posting and answering comments as flights and schedules permit.  Just cut me some slack on beach day--(follow along @chrislovesjulia.)

  1. I have this same sink in my Amazon cart right now. I've been researching non stop for a few days and have finally narrowed it down. I'm just nervous to go ahead with the purchase lol. How is it holding up? Are you still happy with it? I was hopeful by looking it up on Pinterest, I would be able to see more pictures and talk to people who have it. Thanks!

  8. Your kitchen is pretty! I guess I don't understand the draw of the single sink as compared to the traditional two-sided sink. Is it the depth and will you miss having two sides? I've seen them elsewhere as they seem to be popular. Please enlighten me! Thanks : )

    1. I will say a double-sided sink has its perks. For instance, I hand wash most of our pots and knives (don't want those getting dull in the dishwasher) and it was nice to have a side where I could set already washed items ready to be dried. But, all in all--we couldn't soak sheet pans, or even fit a large pot IN our double-sided sink to fill up with water. And they do sell pretty attractive drying racks that work well with sinks with only one basin. For us, it just made better sense.

  9. Please do a follow-up on whether you like the rack in it or not. Whenever I have used a sink with a rack it just seemed to add a step because you have to remove it to scrub or the bottom of the sink gets gunky. And smaller things either fall through the cracks, or don't balance properly. I'll be curious to see if you end up liking it and convince me to rethink :)

  10. these are gorgeous.. but I have to ask- how will they hold up to pots and pans, knives and water? The usual kitchen things that can sometimes bang on to countertops? I just love the look but I would be terrified of destroying them.

    1. I assume you are referring to the countertops? How they will hold up? We did a lot of research before deciding on these and believe they will hold up just fine. Wood is just one of those things that get better with age--even if there are dents and scratches down the line, we'll welcome the patina.

  11. love! We have an undermount seek as well - which I love - but ours is white! Which, actually, is more like a disgusting brown-yellow after two years of use. Why anyone would install a white sink is beyond me (unless you actually do dishes the second you put them in, but we're not those people)... just another thing that makes me scratch my head about the previous house owners

  12. Also, good call on asking a professional to do the nerve-wrenching cut! I love doing all the hard parts myself but that would scare me completely, especially for an undermount sink. And only $30?! Score!
