Casual Friday!

October 18, 2019

This week has been a whirlwind. I surprised Chris with a weekend getaway last week for his birthday, and we ended up rushing home early because of a high fever--he was diagnosed with pneumonia last Friday and it definitely got worse before it got better. But after a week in bed, he is thankfully doing so much better. Still not 100% (the doctor said it could be 6 weeks!) but we had dinner around the table as a family last night (something we generally do every night) and I realized how much I was missing that. It was good to see him up.

While he was down, I did some thrifting and found this cool lamp for $5 and an accordion shade for $3 that I paired with it. I've been noticing a shift back to chimney style shades--the triangle shape, and the more exaggerated, the better!--for awhile now and even purchased a pair with a chimney shade for our bedroom (remember this mood board--they finally arrived!). Turns out, not everyone is a fan. hahaha. My DMs blew up with messages that I have "lost my touch" and I couldn't help but laugh. I think some people may have been scarred by pleated shades of the past or aren't quite ready to embrace the traditional tidal wave that's moving into design. But if you do want to dip a toe in,  a thrifted option is such a great way to try on the trend without a lot of investment.

We'll likely put it in our living room for the long term, but I'm loving it on the kitchen counter too!

Other fun things this week!

The makings of a very stylish mini set.

The Weekend Type, a curated artist print shop, just launched and I'm loving their Thyme print!

• We are installing a master bedroom in a model home next week and I have loved the challenge of putting together a room with lots of personality on a small budget. I ordered this bed (a refreshing take on the iron beds everywhere right now) and I can't wait to see it in place!

• You know how when you decide on something you suddenly start seeing it everywhere and it either confirms your decision, or in some cases makes you think twice. In the case of our checkerboard floors going in the dining room--I just keep getting MORE and MORE excited for them with every other example I see. Check out this beautiful bathroom in@parkanddivision's bathroom. Hubba hubba!

• I've been on the hunt for a whiteboard or calendar for our office and I came across this acrylic and brass one that took my breath away!!!

My coat. THE COAT I can't stop wearing right now. I don't think there's a more me coat. (I got a medium, but it's naturally oversized so a small would have worked!)

A diary entry from a 9 year old that has had me laughing for 2 weeks now. (I'm serious!)

25% off EVERYTHING at Anthropologie today only! It's their best sale day all year. You'll need to sign up for anthroperks which is free and just your email!

My favorite linen banner is half off (plus, free shipping!)

• I'm in love with this space by Lisa Staton Design. The tones. The paneling. The art ledge. The mix of traditional and modern. Taking so many notes! (psst--a really similar marble side table for a steal!)

• Tonight we are hosting a murder mystery dinner party at our house in lieu of our traditional HUGE halloween party we usually throw (and between me and you, we're feeling like this might be our new thing). We'll share all the details on Monday! Have a happy weekend!

  1. Someone gave that lamp away. They literally thought "I don't want this thing anymore." And now look at it...it's famous.

  2. That is quite a week! I love the idea of a murder mystery party as a more "adult" way of doing something fun for Halloween season. Looking forward to hearing about that in a future post.

  3. I like the triangular shaped shades but not the ones with the small pleats. I do like the ones with large pleats a little bit better. I'll come around eventually, I guess. Everyone's probably just mad that they gave all their old shades to Good Will. Ha! Seriously beautiful paneling in the space by Lisa Stanton Design. Swooning! I have always wanted to go to a Murder Mystery party! I am sure it will be so much fun. Enjoy!

  4. I’d love to hear more from y’all about incoming traditional trends. It will be a breath of fresh air after years of “farmhouse chic” and mid century boho flooding the market. Other than wallpaper, darker colors and richer fabrics, what’s on the horizon?

  5. While I'm generally not a fan of the triangle shaped shades, I think the base, size, and room are a huge determination in that visually. For example, the ones you linked for the bedroom I like, they feel very balanced. The vibe/base color is not my style and wouldn't fit in my home, but I would definitely admire it in someone else's home. :) However, I don't think I could go back to the pleated look, for cleaning and light reasons. I'm a big fan of the lint roller with my dust allergies, the not pleated options just make that a bit easier. Also super excited to see more of the mystery party photo wise/costume photos (Halloween is also my favorite holiday)! Hope Chris gets well soon and that it doesn't spread to you and the girls!

  6. I gotta say, I don’t care what the latest trend is, the 80’s called and they want their lamp back. On another note, the murder mystery dinner is so you, I’m sure it’ll be great!

  7. I have wall sconces from Rejuvenation with black pleated shades and I want to get a few more of those sconces and they don’t have them anymore and I can’t find pleated shades anywhere either.

  8. I am totally on team triangle lamp shade. Have four right now. None of them pleated.

People, do not mock the triangle lamp shade. You know Julia is going to make you want one too.

    1. Forgot to say we were at a murder mystery game last night. And we won! Looking forward to reading all about yours on Monday.

But hope you'll still have your traditional Halloween family photo. You do costumes and themes so well!

  9. I have been off trend for years. Chimney shades never went out of style in my house (though I personally am not a fan of pleats, but that may have more to do with the dog hair sitch in my house than the visuam impact!). I bought drum shades a few years ago and returned them after two days. It's about how the light filters for me, and chimney shades create a cozier light to my eyes, and it's all about the ambiance! Maybe I can finally find some new ones. The aforementioned dogs have taken out a couple of lampshades through the years. Curly tails!

  10. Love your casual Friday updates, thank you for sharing!! So fun to see what’s been going on in the lives of my favorite home bloggers!
Also LOVING the lamp shade trend and you are most definitely not “losing your touch” hahah
Cannot wait to see how the murder mystery party went either — so fun!!
    Hope Chris feels better soon.
    Xx

  11. All anyone needs to do is check out all the great British/European stores popping up in NYC such as DeVol Kitchen or The House of Hockney to see just how correct you are. And the wallpaper. It’s all taking me back to the 80’s, in a good way, not the geese in blue with Teddy Bears and hearts way :).
I suggest everyone running to their favorite thrift stores and grabbing all the old decorating/home styling books. I predict they will be the next big ticket item for coffee tables and bookshelves.

  12. Regarding the lamp shade, I have this theory that often once you've been through one design trend, you don't like it when it comes around again. I remember growing up my mom would groan and say something like "oh, that's so hideous, we used that in the 60's (or whatever time period)". Now that I am 50, I hear myself saying things like that (but only in my head because I don't want to turn into my mother!). When I saw designers starting to use artificial plants in recent years, I thought to myself, oh, we did that in the 90's? I think if (when) jewel tones come back in design...burgundy, navy, hunter green...I might actually have a physical reaction...and not a good one! So anyway, my point is that maybe the lamp shade haters have just already been through that before. I think it looks good in your house though!

    1. Not to make you feel ill, but jewel tones like hunter green, navy and burgundy are back. Lol I was pretty ill at first too, remembering the sins of the 90s, but I like how some designers use these colours in new ways that don’t repeat dreadful 90s design.

  13. I think people not appreciating the lampshade says more about their aesthetic than yours. I've been seeing this shape of shade in high end design for a while now. I for one love it.

  14. The 9 yr. diary is SO FUNNY! Brings me back to my 9 year old diary... I was certain that I was in love with a cute boy that played an Indian in one of the Sunday night Disney shows and was going to marry him one day.. and we would live our life as Indians (I wanted to be an Indian from the Old West SO BAD!) . Also, I was convinced that my mom liked my sister better than me... well, at least her haircut. Ha!

  15. Are you still taking a family halloween photo this year, even without the need for halloween party invitations? I was looking forward to that! :P

  16. If you haven't already it would be goood to get the lamp rewired just to be on the safe side. Love the shade it's classic looking. Looks like it came from our parents houses, in a good way. Glad Chris is feeling better

  17. I love the lamp and I love old thrifted stuff with new. I find that older things just have a little more character in them. I have a old brass lamp from the 60s that belonged to my husbands grandmother, and I just love it. It also has a pleated shade. I think you have beautiful taste and I always appreciate when people thrift for items.

  18. Haha, oh my, people are hilarious! Glad you can laugh it off because you certainly haven't lost your touch! Keep making people uncomfortable by sharing your awesome style that isn't just regurgitated Pinterest! Love the thrift finds, love the lamp, love CLJ-- keep inspiring!
