In the beginning stages of the designing our master bathroom (all the way back in June!), I shared an inspiration photo of a bathroom with a glass shower door, paired with brass hinges and a brass knob *gasp.* Not a handle or pull--a knob on the glass shower door. I was so inspired and I knew it was something I wanted for our bathroom.
Back in November, I consulted our custom glass company that was going to do our shower door, and I brought up that I really wanted a brass knob on the door. He said it was doable but all of the options he showed me felt too small. Less than 2 inches was just not going to bring the vision I had in my mind to life. I was feeling a little defeated (and a little annoying--do you ever feel annoying when someone is trying to help you but it's just not what you had in mind?) Then I asked him. "What if we used, like,... a dummy doorknob? Would it be possible to fabricate that with the glass?"
“I don’t see why not." I'm sorry--WHAT! First of all, that's a phrase we love hearing and secondly, what a simple solution! So--I'm here to announce to all of you--you can have a dummy doorknob fabricated on a glass shower door! The possibilities!
I found the perfect dummy knob (dummy knobs don't turn or lockH) on Rejuvenation. *purchased 2 instantly.* Once they came in, our fabricator matched the finish with hinges we chose from his selection and once the door was delivered and installed, it was as if I was seeing a vision become a reality. There’s just not a better feeling when designing anything custom for your home.
Every detail that comes together in our bathroom brings us closer and closer to the grand finale, and gives me further clarity on the other finishes we’ve been a bit stumped on. This knob was definitely a missing piece.

This has such a fantasy Alice-in-Wonderland feel to it, love it!
This is stunning. You have set a new standard.
Beautiful! Is it just glued on?
No, it's fabricated in the door.
Hello. I’m curious where you sourced the “dummy knob” for the shower door. I have a client interested replicated this look. Do you have a manufacturer and part # for the dummy knob? Thank you.
Such a great idea!! And love it when people are willing to do something unique when it's not in their wheelhouse!
Love this- awesome idea and look!
Very cool. But is this made for the everyday contact with water. Will it tarnish in the short term/long run? I would definitely consider this idea for a future reno.
We'll keep you posted!
Ive been following your site for almost a year now, on youtube and pinterest too. Thank you for always including your sources! It makes finding curtains, art, decor, inspo, etc so much easier. And I love that you arent afraid to decorate with bold color in your house. Ive gotten in a rut sticking to 'safe' neutrals but I really want to finish our home this year and put our stamp on it. We bought a fixer upper 5 yrs ago and havent quite finished some things. Mostly because of my indecisiveness! Haha..
*purchased 2 instantly.*
This made me LOL.
The door is fab. The knob idea is so good!
It's BEAUTIFUL and what a lovely response from the fabricator. Wouldn't it be nice if all problems were that simple to solve? ;)
Beautiful! I’m trying very hard to convince my husband (and contractor) to move the shower to the wall with windows and am getting push back. How did you handle privacy for the window?
It's a privacy window!
By privacy window do you mean it came from manufacturer with tint/frost/film on the glass or was it something that was added to the glass after?
It came from the manufacturer with the privacy built in
Not to discourage you, because this is absolutely beautiful, but we had a window in our shower, and it was a BEAST. It was always a problem to keep clean. Constantly getting mildew and everything despite cleaning it VERY regularly (to avoid the problem we were having). Granted, our window was much bigger and it was just constantly getting full of scum and a problem to maintain nicely. Just another point of feedback! Maybe we are just wild shower-ers, lol! Previous owners put it in our house and as much as I love the light, I couldn't ever do it again!
Ahh! This is stunning! We got to choose brass as the color but didn’t get any options on the actual door knob. I’m needing to change it out now! I love how much character it gives! Now I’m off to Google how to switch out handles on glass shower door
Gorgeous...and genius!
I love how you think of solutions. I'm lookin at buying a fixer upper and already the contractors are telling me 'no' to everything that's not readily sold in supply shops. It's like imagination is dead here:(
I have to ask - here it seems that shower glass doors can only be installed with a flimsy silicone strip encasing all exposed edges - instead of just making the lass pane to exact size. I see yours doesn't have it - will you keep it that way? Because I have half a mind to stop arguing with the contractor and just rip off those strips after he's gone.
I think if you have a steam shower, they want it really sealed, but we decided against a steam shower because it gets steamy regardless. I'm not sure--our door had no silicone around it.
Ours has that on just the bottom of the door, with a little flap sticking out. It's useful for allowing the water to drip away from the edge.
It is called a frameless shower door. It has two hinges on one side. Most often it will have a small clear “water sweeper” on the bottom of the glass. I usually just take it off (it should slide off easily by moving it to the side when the door is open). I don’t have problems with water splashing out. This is the only style door I use. It swings both directions and is easier to clean.
So how does the door actually open and close? Just through push/pull?
Yup!
It’s so unique! Great vision.
I want a large dummy doorknob (who knew that’s what it’s called?!) in the middle center of my front door like they have in Europe. I always thought that was so interesting!
This is beautiful! Love the mix of brass and black. Is there a link for the towel? It looks like a mix of Turkish and typical bath towel and looks luxurious.
It's from Kohler. Their towels are incredible!
Did you consider centering the shower door in front of the window? That would bother me but to each their own!
It's centered in the shower. :)
Looks great! I love this idea. I remember seeing that inspiration photo, and I didn't realize it was a glass door! I thought it was a white door with a glass insert in the top, haha!
The doorknob looks magical! It almost looks like an optical illusion.
a. It looks fab - so no surprises here and
b. I just added "dummy knob" to my English vocabulary :)
Love this idea, but can it get wet?
I was kind of surprised that the shower fixtures didn’t match the brass. Can you share the process of the decision making? I love everything you two do.
We have all black plumbing fixtures and brass hardware. Love to mix!
Beautiful! I totally feel annoying when I'm trying to press forward with a vision, especially when it is an out-of-the-ordinary request. We are just getting the ball rolling on our big master bath reno (which was supposed to start in MAY!) and this is something I'm absolutely struggling with myself. It has been a learning curve of when to bend, let things go, or stand your ground to find a solution that matches the *vision*! So glad to see that everything appears to be coming together for your master bath - at last!
