My 5 Simple Rules for Fall Decorating Under $30

September 17, 2018

(Our back deck from last October, right  here).

This weekend, I started getting our home dressed for the upcoming season. Fall kicks off officially this week and while I'm not a big seasonal decorator, there are 5 little things I like to do that help it reflect the changing of the seasons. Just like I start layering on the sweaters in my wardrobe, and reach for more muted tones (who am I kidding, I only wear muted tones) when the weather starts changing, I do the same thing in our home.  You don't have to take fall literally and cover your house with leaves and big wooden signs that say, FALL. These are the 5 simple things I like to do:

  1. Layer on some cozy knit throws. In the warmer months, I usually keep a light throw tucked on the side of the sofa (if anything), but now is not the time to be shy. Go cozy, go textural, it can be dark and moody or really furry. I linked a good option under $30 below!
  2. Swap out pillows for muted tones or more textures.
  3. Bye, bye beach art. I'm not saying swap out your 36x48 masterpiece, but if you have smaller prominent art that feels summery--try switching it up with something like abstract leaves or just something with warmer tones. I love trying new art around our home.
  4. Nothing says spring and summer like bright green stems in your vases. Replacing them with fall florals like the ones I linked below will be a lot more in line with the season.
  5. Smell is your most powerful ally. If nothing else, changing up the scent of your home and lighting your favorite fall scents will immediately bring all the autumn nostalgia you could ask for. I like to switch up our hand soaps, too, so I'm fully immersed.

Of course, none of this has to be expensive. You can bring in turning stems from outside, DIY your own art--here are 15 fall-ish finds that all come in under $30!

  1. Great ideas! I'm not wonderful at switching decor for the seasons, but this just seems so easy that I'll definitely give it a shot. Especially the blankets and floral switches!
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  2. These are some great ideas! The pillows suggestion resonates with me because our new couch came with an assortment of black, gray and yellow throw pillows, which I love. But with our yellow paint it's pretty summer-y in there. Home Goods, here I come!

  3. I LOVE that print. Going to figure out a DIY version to stick in one of my thrift store frames - I'm pretty sure my pen and ink skills (or maybe leaf stamping...) are up to something with a similar feel. Also, smart tip about smells. I think it would make a big difference in our season-challenged SoCal location. I've gotten crazy sensitive (like instant headache from two rooms away) to most candles I try to bring home - seems ok in the store and then NOPE. So since I can no longer pick up $5 clearance beauties, I don't do anything. But this season I've really been wanting the fall scents and have decided to try the all beeswax, essential oil fragrance type of candles and see if I can't bring that layer of fall into my home in a way that my system is happy with. Good call changing soaps too- I hadn't thought of that!

    1. another easy way to bring in fall smells that are all natural is to simmer a pot of water with fall baking spices, like cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, cardamom, or vanilla. Or go for the real deal and bake an apple crisp!

  4. I love this post! I’m not a big fan of fall decorations either but I still feel the need to change things up. These ideas are so perfect!

  5. Thanks for confirming my "I'm not a big seasonal decorator " personality. I always felt like i was being a scrooge but i hate clutter! I love your ideas! Thank you!

  6. Really like these picks (esp the plaids)! And thank you for keeping it under $30, it's definitely easier to decorate for the seasons when it's more affordable.
