There’s a New Style Emerging, I’m Coining It “Polished Heritage”

Get inspired by this moody decor & fashion revival that’s about mixing the confident decadence of the past with clean-lined modern, masculine tailored details.

After renovating for the better part of the year, I’m happy to report that my brain feels back-ish and the home (and fashion) inspiration for this season has been flowing. I started a Pinterest board about a month ago that I called “Fall is going to hit so hard” which was originally meant as a personal exercise to round up some fun fall fashion and home inspo for myself for fall. It turned into me realizing that there were a lot of common themes throughout everything I pinned. And it all worked really well together. When I see something like this, I immediately think—this is a whole new style. And then my heart started beating really fast, and I knew I wanted to tell you all about it.

Before I talk about trends, I do want to say one thing really quickly: I’m a firm believer that nothing is ever truly “out” of style if it’s well loved. The coziest and most beautiful homes I have ever been in were the homes of people who loved their home and loved to create memories there. You could feel it. So I DON’T want this to make anyone feel like they hate something in their house suddenly. Many of these “trends” are things that were popular decades ago, but framed in a new way. I love how that can inspire us in our homes—and wardrobes—so we don’t all start to look the same!

I really wanted to put a name to this new style, and we decided on Polished Heritage: A moody revival that’s all about mixing the confident decadence of the past with clean-lined modern, masculine tailored details.

Here’s what you can expect to see with Polished Heritage:

1. Polished Silver Tones, Everywhere

I saw this trend arising last year, and I think it’s getting even more prominent: Silver is everywhere again. We all went hard on gold for a while (I still am!), but I’m seeing more and more shiny stainless pieces, silver, and polished nickel (a personal fave!) in everything from hardware to lighting, trays, candlesticks, picture frames, and accessories. But it has to be polished. Satin nickel, brushed nickel is NOT going to give you the Polished Heritage look. Silver has an edgy cool about it that gives off old money. It’s not called “Polished Heritage” for nothing. You’ll see a lot of the elements are meant to bounce light, glisten and glam, and shining silver is the preferred metal for the job. (Although you can and should totally mix in some brass too, like I’ve been telling you for the last decade. You know this.)

Try a silver frame by a bed with a gold sconce or picture light nearby. Or a polished nickel faucet with unlacquered brass cabinet hardware. It adds so much more complexity to a room, making it feel dynamic and not so…well, cookie-cutter.

2. A New Surprising Green

The color palette this season is pared-back, decadent shades: oxblood, cinnamon, chocolate, cream, black. Except for one surprising exception—the unexpected hero: cool aloe green and also a clean olive green? I know. Stay with me.

This is more than just a pop of color; it’s a statement. With the other rich tones and materials such as merlot and mahogany, it creates a striking contrast that makes the entire palette feel fresh and elevated. It’s an invigorating and sophisticated twist on a cozy, enveloping space.

Another key shade to consider is a cleaner olive green, not sage. And, or a lighter aloe green. This isn’t sage. It’s not dusty. It’s not deep like a hunter green. It’s notably different. I have a theory that every new trend has a new version of green tied to it. Everyone loves green so it makes sense that it keeps evolving and popping up again in a new way that makes you stop in your tracks.

3. Tiny PATTERNS Everywhere that read as TEXTURES

We all love pattern play, but now I’m noticing that patterns are quieting a bit. The repeats are getting smaller and smaller—so much so that they create an appearance of textures more than of pattern. For example, a pinstripe or hairline stripe so small it gives off a twill or corduroy effect. This is where the “tailored” element comes into play because a lot of the patterns that I’m loving for Polished Heritage feel like classic suiting.

I’m also noticing a pull toward textures over patterns. For example, grasscloth and leathered wall coverings are timeless, yet you’re seeing them in more modern colors. We just installed black grasscloth in our primary closets, and they make the backdrop look so luxurious!

4. Fine Art Black & White Photography

For quite some time, fine art oil paintings have dominated interiors, reaching its peak during the grandmillenial movement, imo. We all loved the richness and charm they added. Print shops sprouted up with reproduction prints. It trickled down to the ability to buy pretty great little faux oil paintings of still life and English countryside scenes at big box stores. Polished Heritage brings back black-and-white photography as art.

I’m absolutely embracing this in my own home—I’ve already ordered some silver frames that I plan to hang in a stack. Now I just need to find my subject matter! I’m particularly drawn to interesting crops of vintage cars, boats, and candid lifestyle photography, from scenes of dancers to buildings and skylines. A single, well-placed black-and-white photograph, with a white mat and a silver frame can feel so powerful. Imagine one over the tub or even a small one in the pantry! Almost every image I pinned has one on display. It’s a simple way to add a sophisticated touch.

5. Thin Lamps

Source: Crate & Barrel

The Polished Heritage trend focuses on stronger, more angular, sharp shapes in interiors, and that extends to lighting. As I’m looking around my home, I’m noticing a mix of round bulbous lamps that I’ve had for years mixed in with lamps with thinner, more stick like bases that are newer. Are lamps…getting…skinnier? Yes, and it fits right in to this style of sharper shapes. Trade your globes for slim cylinders. Give me a polished nickel lamp base or clear glass with a nearly perfect conal shade and I’m gonna drool all over it right now.

This extends from table lamps to floor lamps, but also plays well with candle sticks–which are also a very big part of this rising trend trend. Warm lighting. Candle sticks on the coffee table, in a wall sconce, on the dining table. Stick-y lighting adds little warm touches everywhere in a style that could, otherwise, feel cold.

6. Glass & Mirrors

Source: William Sonoma

This might seem like a very specific detail to include, but after years of experimenting with every color available in glass, Polished Heritage brings clear glass back to the forefront and bigger than ever. From clear glass lamp bases to hurricane candle holders to crystal bathroom canisters, tableware, catch-alls, match holders, etageres, glass shelves in bathrooms. Clear glass allows every day objects to be seen and those everyday objects feel like home (and are likely the prettiest versions of themselves.)

Like glass and shiny silver, mirrors also have the ability to beautifully bounce light around the room, which is why we’re seeing antiqued mirrors trending here. Backsplashes and mirrored storage boxes. Or mirrors layered behind a large black and white photograph all get a big “yes” from me.

7. Mahogany is the wood tone of the moment

Heritage decadence is definitely calling for a deep wood tone. Mahogany takes the other popular dark wood tone, walnut, and gives it a hint of rich color undertones. I’m drooling over seeing it layered with silver, marble, glass and black. So many polished surfaces and sparkly reflections, grounded by this wood tone that feels like it has lived hundreds of lives before its shiny companions. Oooo!!! I love it.

8. Frenchgiving Tablescape

When it comes to the table, you might think that Polished Heritage would bring in the dark colors, but I see it going the opposite way. I feel like for a while, patterned napkins and linens stole the spotlight on our tables. But now, it’s about the china set. The whole China set. Ask your grandma if you can put hers to good use—it’s the perfect touch for a “Frenchgiving”! Pair it with crisp white or creamy linens, and hey, extra points for monograms. It’s an elegant blend of old-world charm and traditional elements that create a sophisticated, lived-in atmosphere.

9. Polished Heritage in Fall Fashion

Just for fun, I thought I would throw in some fall style trends that I’m loving for myself that fit right into “Polished Heritage”. There’s definitely a polished masculine influence happening in fashion this fall. Pleated trousers, loafers, and oversized blazers. I love a vest that’s more of a sleeveless button-up coat. We’re seeing a return to classic fashion staples like belts and trouser socks, herringbone and pinstripes and there is no such thing as too many layers. It’s heavy on the neutrals and crisp lines, but also a great pair of straight denim in a lived-in blue that isn’t distressed. Paired with a fresh blowout for your hair and silver chunky earrings.

For a long time, fashion was all about simple shapes, but now, especially for fall, it’s about building layers. I see the same thing happening in interiors. A mirror becomes a backdrop for layered picture frames, photos, and candles. It’s about creating a sense of luxe decadence without being cluttered. Nothing is shouting at you—it’s a polished heritage style that lets you build and create a space with intention, not just stuff.

What are you most excited to see this fall? What trends are you loving or returning to, and which ones are you skipping?

If you’re looking to add some of these into your home, you can find all of this and more in the CLJ Fall Shop:

  1. I am sooooo ready to try rub and buff… thank you for your post… I want to incorporate more of this polished silver and change out my gold for brass

  2. Very nice article. I think you have nailed it with where the trends will go. I have enjoyed looking at the “grand millennial” style which I think was really a heritage trend, but it seems like people have taken it to an extreme with their maximalism. It’s hit a “jump the shark” moment with everyone buying out vintage stores and thrift shops and hanging it on their walls. So your concept of polished heritage I think will be the natural next step. Still a call back to heritage, but done in a more refined, intentional, lux manner.

  3. Bonus points if your mom gave you your “inheritance” early and you’ve been storing all her china and silver for a decade! What is old is new again!

  4. I loooove all of this and I love these sorts of pieces you write – thank you for sharing! They are so influential in my little world :) we’ve been renovating and I’ve found my heart leaning in this sort of direction and now I can put a fab name to the style. I also love that the sorts of items you’ve shared are thrift-able and those older and pre-loved (but polished up!) items add such charm and value to a space.

  5. Love this style! Also love how well it balances with your new website design!! I’m obsessed! P. S. I check your site daily for updates (I’m no longer on social). Love keeping up with you here! And love the new font color!!! The old one killed my eyes trying to read your blogs on my phone, this is much easier!!
