Friday, we left you with our finished and hung shelves:
Which was lightyears away from where we started:
But over the weekend, we got them loaded up and the room feels so much more complete.
My entire family flew in for an early Christmas this weekend, and we were hosting dinner and games on Saturday night at our place. I was up early Saturday morning to finish unpacking boxes of decor and books. There are tweaks to be made, of course, but we have already logged in a few hours in this room reading and having mini jam sessions with the guitar and djembe--so music room, too?. We are so grateful to have a room to just unwind in. What an unnecessary, but completely delightful luxury. You can see even Greta has a stack of her books on the bottom shelf for easy access. It's our new favorite room. We still plan on ripping out the carpet soon (!), but I'll spill those details next week.
Sunday, my family opted to have our family photo taken in front of our shelves. They made for a fun and textured background for all of my pretty sisters and sweet parents.
The rest of this week, we are spending as a little family celebrating Christmas and then we're off to Chris's brother's wedding (he's marrying one of my best friends!) on the 26th. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you. We are feeling particularly grateful for our virtual friends (you!) and can't wait to share with you what's in store for 2014--big things!!

Your finished shelves are beautiful!!! I found your blog by searching for stained Douglas fir, very helpful indeed. Thank you!
I have a question, it appears your shelves are floating shelves, if they are would you please tell me what you used?
Thanks a bunch!
We used small, unseen metal brackets attached from the back and underneath.
[…] is sometimes hard to understand how everything is laid out from photos. This photo was taken from the reading room. The front door is to the left right outside the room and the living room to the right. […]

Beautiful room! Just the green color Is just what I have been looking to paint my dining room. Mind sharing the name of the color you used
Thanks Sarah! It's actually a custom color. I included the formula in this blog post: https://chrislovesjulia.com/2013/10/reading-room-green.html
The room looks like it's out of a magazine, and you have one beautiful family. Have a blessed holiday!
I can't believe how quickly this room came together. Love the look of wooden shelves. Merry Christmas!
Oh my goodness! Those shelves look amazing! I love it all!
I LOVE how you styled it. You have such an amazing touch.
Yowza - this looks outstanding!!! Excellent styling job, too. It would take me months to style shelves like that, haha! And you have a gorgeous family :)
It looks amazing! I love that coffee table in there too- its the perfect size
One. Your family is gorgeous!
Two. I am usually the biggest hater of carpet but I actually think I like it in this room. When I saw you were going to rip it up, I was surprised that I was against it. The carpet makes the room so cozy! But I guess hardwood floors with a big fluffy rug could do the same :)
The carpet throughout the whole house is not in really bad shape, but you're right--it does provide a calming feeling in here. We'll have to find a cozy (under foot and color-wise) area rug to lay down for sure.
What a perfectly gifted family of gorgeous women. Seriously.
