7 Ways to Lighten Up Your Home for Spring

If you’re anything like me, some time around mid-February there’s a shift. The holidays are long gone, and yet spring still feels just out of reach. I start craving light — longer days, fresher air, softer colors. And while I can’t control the weather (wouldn’t that be nice?), I can start nudging our home in that direction.

Seasonal decorating doesn’t have to mean a full overhaul or a major investment. In fact, I think the most meaningful transitions are the subtle ones — the small edits that make everything feel lighter, fresher, and just a little more hopeful. For me, moving from winter to spring is less about adding and more about lightening up. Here are seven simple ways I make that shift at home.

1. Swap Your Stems

Stems are truly the easiest way to signal a new season. They’re impactful, affordable, and take about five minutes to style.

In winter, I lean into moodier branches — bare stems, darker tones, anything that feels sculptural and cozy. But as we inch toward spring, I start swapping those out for budding florals, fresh greenery, and softer textures. Even faux stems can feel incredibly realistic if you mix them thoughtfully.

One trick I always use when styling multiple arrangements in one room: I like to pair something floral with something branchy. That contrast keeps it from feeling too sweet and gives the space a more collected, layered look.

2. Change Your Pillows

Textiles carry so much seasonal weight. During winter, I gravitate toward deeper tones and heavier fabrics — velvets, wools, rich moody colors. They’re cozy and grounding, which feels just right when it’s cold outside.

But come spring? I’m ready to lighten everything up.

That might mean swapping in lighter color palettes, woven textures, or subtle stripes. On our sofas, I recently did a bit of a “pattern drench” moment with two striped pillows. It adds interest and movement, but visually it feels so much less heavy than solid, saturated tones. It’s amazing how something as simple as a pillow swap can completely shift the energy of a room.

3. Store Heavy Blankets and Throws

I love a cozy throw as much as anyone, but let’s be honest — a chunky knit or heavy fleece instantly reads winter.

As we transition seasons, I start storing away the heavier layers and replacing them with lighter-weight options. Think breathable knits, cotton blends, or anything with a softer drape. Even better if it’s in a fresh, seasonal color.

It’s still cozy — just not hibernation cozy.

4. Add in Seasonal Tableware

I don’t do a full seasonal dish swap, but I love weaving in a few intentional pieces that nod to the season.

This spring I’m especially drawn to silver accents with Polished Heritage style. Mixed with rattan chargers or trays and light olive green elements, silver suddenly feels fresh and layered. It’s about creating a tablescape that feels collected and lived-in while still reflecting the shift in season.

Even something as small as new napkins or a different serving bowl can make everyday meals feel a little more special.

5. Display Seasonal Produce

This might be the simplest change of all — because you’re buying produce anyway.

I keep our fruit in a tiered stand or a bowl on the kitchen counter, and it doubles as both storage and decor. Citrus, green apples, pears — whatever’s in season — instantly brings life and color into the kitchen. There’s something about seeing fresh produce out in the open that just feels energizing and spring-forward.

It’s beautiful, practical, and completely effortless.

6. Layer in Seasonal Scents

Scent is one of the most underused decorating opportunities, imo. We think about what our homes look like, but what about what they feel like when you walk in the door?

There’s something about a bright, airy scent that instantly shifts the mood of a space. Around this time of year, I’m packing away my winter candles and reaching for something lighter and fresher. I’ll also swap out my Pura scents for clean florals, citrus, or anything that feels crisp and new.

It’s a small change, but walking into a home that smells like spring? It makes all the difference.

7. Change Your Frame TV Art

Stems might be the easiest swap, but this one is hands-down the cheapest.

If you have an art TV like The Frame, you can update your “artwork” in a matter of minutes — often for under $5. Over the winter, I had a tapestry-inspired piece displayed that felt cozy and moody. But as we move toward spring, I’ll be switching to something that still feels traditional and moody but with a little more spring energy.

It’s such a simple update, but because the TV is often a focal point in the room, the impact is surprisingly big. A quick digital art change and suddenly the whole space feels refreshed.

Seasonal transitions don’t have to be dramatic to be impactful. A few thoughtful swaps — lighter stems, brighter textiles, fresh table accents — can completely shift how your home feels. And right now, that little bit of lightness is exactly what I’m craving.
